by HELEN REYNOLDS. Coral Gables has never become as excited over British Relief as Miami Beach. No talk here of "balls", "auction" sales etc., but rather it has been content with its own commendable record (highest in Dade County) of assistance to the American Red Cross. All summer long when most of Miami Beach was boarded up, residents of Coral Gables, "yearrounders", were busy with knitting needles and sewing box, making sweaters, shawls, afghans, under the splendid leadership of Mrs. R. B. Roberts, Jr., of women's and children's dresses, baby outfits and hospital gowns under the capable Mrs. John Hone, for shipment to Britian. Yesterday a committee from the welfare department of the Coral Gables Music Club met at the home of Mrs. George Corrigan to formulate plans for a series of telephone bridge parties for the benefit of British Relief. This committee with Mrs. Corrigan as chairman, is composed of Mrs. Richard Bartholomew, Mrs. David Jeffress, Mrs. Dorothy Moore, and Miss Gracia Lawless. The plan for twenty parties of two tables each, to take place simultaneously in twenty homes was to have been worked out. Mr. and Mrs. S. Rae Hickock of Rochester, N. Y. who last year spent the season in Coral Gables at 3745 Alhambra Court arrived this week and have taken a house on Matheson Avenue, Coconut Grove. The Hickok's were among the 32 guests Wednesday night of Mr. and Mrs. A. B. Headley who entertained at the first in a series of buffet suppers they will give during the season. The guests were mostly winter visitors from Rochester, Mr. Headley's former home. Dr. and Mrs. John B. Colwell of 1300 Coral Way have with them this winter Charles W. Grove, Mrs. Colwell's father and Miss Velda Budd who makes her home with them as their winter guests. The Colwell's arrived Miami side a week from their home in Champaign, Ill., to stay until May ... Mr. and Mrs. John E. Zimmerman of Detroit, Mich., are the guests for two weeks of his mother, Mrs. John H. Zimmerman, 1414 Alhambra Circle ... Mrs. W. G. Russell of Waco, Texas arrived Saturday to be the guest of her daughter and son-in-law Mr. and Mrs. Wiley Kask. The Kasks, residents of Daytona Beach, until last year have moved into their attractive new Colonial home at the corner of San Domingo and Valencia Avenues. Wiley, Jr. attends Ponce de Leon High school and Kathleen, attends Miss Kennedy's Ken-Castle Kindergarten. Mrs. Myron C. Perley of 440 Avenue Giralda entertained recently at a cocktail party, the first in a series she plans for this winter. Mr. and Mrs. E. A. Wilsay of Morristown, N. J., who have arrived to spend the winter here, were among the guests. Others were Mr. and Mrs. Gordon Walker of Evanston and South Greenway Drive; Mr. and Mrs. Richard Bartholomew; Col. John F. O'reihan, Jr., of Washington, Mrs. Arthur Field Saxton also of Washington, Dean Parmelee, E. H. Stone of Montana and the Charles H. Oehler's Jr. of Coral Gables. We have always been intrigued by the stories of the roof tops in Bermuda, how, they are constructed to catch the precious rainwater, the island's only source of drinking water. One of Coral Gables' newest and most attractive houses has this type roof. It is the rambling, gray-shuttered one story Bermuda type home of Mr. and Mrs. J. B. (Jack) Orr, Jr., of 2623 Avenue San Domingo. Stephen H. Zachar of Miami Beach was the architect and it is the first house of its kind Mr. Zachar has designed for the Gables. Mr. Orr, whose late father was the well-known John B. Orr of Miami and whose uncle is Miami's Mayor Alexander Orr, Jr., is finishing his law courses at the University of Miami. It was the warm air of hospitality and Coral Gables homey atmosphere that inspired Mr. and Mrs. Orr, (she was the former Miss Virginia Lee Boid of Cincinnati) to establish their residence here. Mrs. Earl Hoag of Arlington, Va., was the recent week-end guest of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Bryant of 813 Avenue Castile. Col. Hoag, formerly commandant here and now stationed at Washington, D. C., will join Mrs. Hoag at the end of January for a vacation visit and will then renew many acquaintances in Coral Gables. During the Hoag's four year stay here they lived at 809 Coral Way. Because they both love flying, Miss Virginia May Morrow (youngest woman pilot in Dade County) and Wilbur A. Sheffield instructor in aviation at the Emery-Riddle School and assistant instructor at the University of Miami, air school will be married at 3 p. m. February third at "hangar number one" Muncipial Airport, (LeJeune Road at 95th st.). Miss Morrow attends Stetson College. The University of Miami has among its student body, two sisters who are "albinos". They are Miss May (a sophomore) and Miss Ethel (a freshman) Stelle. The Stelle sisters present a striking picture with their white, white hair and pink eyes. They live with their parents brothers and sisters all of whom are dark complexioned in the Southwest section, of Miami. Miss Dorothy H. Mendel, daughter of Dr. and Mrs. James H. Peter Mendel of 4320 Avenue Santa Maria, whose engagement to Francis C. Jones was announced last May has chosen February 18 as the date of the wedding. The ceremony will take place at 7 p. m. at St. Stephen's Episcopal Church. Names of attendants will be announced later. If you didn't see the Theatre of Fifteen in last week's presentation of "Margin for Error" then you missed a real treat of "Nazi rule, murders intrigues etc". Our old favorites, Richard Sulivan, as the German Consul and Mary Greene who played the part of his wife were great. The night we were there the wind howled and the rain came down in sheets which added to the flavor of the play no end . . . In the rain soaked lobby sipping coffee between the acts we glimpsed, Mrs. George A. Hughes, who never misses a 15 show, Harry Morgenthaler, Manna Zucca, her husband, Irwin Cassel and their nearly grown son, Marwin; the A. W. Barretts, many others.
