by HELEN REYNOLDS VALENTINE SEASON comes but once a year, just as Christmas; but where Christmas touches the "pocket-book" (mostly) Valentine touches the heart and brings to mind thoughts of spring, new clothes—parties . . . The first of two important large parties gracing the calendar for next week is the Valentine tea Mrs. Marvin D. Adams and Mrs. Harry E. Simpson will give Wednesday at the latter's home, 1420 Granada Boulevard. Clever red heart invitations announce the hours are from three until five o'clock. Included among the assistants will be Mrs. Arthur H. Weiland, Mrs. Robert H. Harris, Mrs. McGregor Smith, Mrs. L. D. Pankey, Mrs. P. B. Welch, Mrs. Willard R. Blackwood, Mrs. Terrell H. Tumlin and the two attractive subdeb daughters of the hostesses, Miss Patty Adams and Miss Ann Simpson . . . The second will be the large party Mr. and Mrs. Robert Emerson Page and their son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Benjamin Worcester Turner will give from five until seven February sixteenth at the Page home, 2814 Granada Boulevard. The party will honor Mr. Turner's parents, Dr. and Mrs. Hunter Heiner Turner and his sister, Miss Anne Margaret Turner. Assistants will be Mrs. M. C. Taylor, Mrs. Robert Crowe, Mrs. A. H. Gleason, Mrs. John Halifax, Mrs. Alpheus Collins, Mrs. A. B. Morrison, Mrs. Kenneth Keyes, Mrs. Bradbury Barnes, Mrs. Stuart Patton, Mrs. A. W. Barrett, and Miss Bab Feltyberger. Major and Mrs. Davis H. Estill, of 1402 Pizarro street, have as their guests Mrs. Estill's sister, Mrs. C. C. DeBolt and young son, Robert and Mr. and Mrs. Earl Heminger, uncle and aunt of Mrs. Estill, all of Chanute, Kans. The visitors, enjoying their first trip to Florida, are fishing and sightseeing and being informally entertained . . . Mr. and Mrs. Herbert Yeager of Sharon, Pa., are the house guests of Mr. and Mrs. S. Ernest Philpitt of 1032 Avenue Palermo. Dr. and Mrs. Oscar Linder, of 1235 Avenue Calaloria, have as their guest, Edmund Graham of Milwaukee. Selling 475 tickets for their successful bridge-tea Friday at the Miami Biltmore was the chief topic of conversation yesterday morning at the executive board meeting of the Town and Gown held at the Administration building. Proceeds will be used to buy many needs for various departments of the college. Mr. and Mrs. Harry V. Scott arrived yesterday from Chicago and have again leased the Douglas Atkinson cottage at 1512 Asturia, where Mrs. Scott and two grandchildren will be until May. The Atkinsons have taken a cottage at 2018 Red Road. Charles J. White of Coral Gables and James Waddell of Palm Beach left Thursday by plane for Tampa where they will board the British fruit boat "Tosta" for a trip to British Honduras. Itinery includes visits to Havana, Mexico and perhaps Jamaica. Return to time will be away a month . . . Mrs. Albert Wilson Bryan, the third left Sunday for her home in Lexington, Ky., after a month's visit with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. T. G. Lietch, 1207 Mariola Court. Mr. and Mrs. Carl A. Preim will entertain at cocktails from 5:30 to 7:30 p. m. tomorrow at their winter home, 1220 Avenue Sevilla. Hostesses will be their guests, Mr. and Mrs. R. L. Darnell and Mr. and Mrs. Joseph N. Rowland of Summit, N. J. Mrs. Hewett Brown has been made Coral Gables chairman of knitting for the British War Relief unit recently established on Miami Beach. Mrs. Brown has plenty of yarn and the knitting needles available at her home, 1100 South Greenway drive and will be happy for all who would like to knit, sweaters or sea boots for the British to call her. Her telephone is 4-1521. Three hundred garments were shipped recently by the unit. Coral Gables friends of Frederick Jones, will be interested to know that he will arrive Tuesday from Bellport, N. Y. for his annual visit. He will be the guest while here of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Shiel of 2420 Indian Mound Trail. Mr. Jones past president of the Century Club of Coral Gables and Mrs. Jones were prominently identified with the social life of the Gables until a few years ago when they moved permanently to their summer home on Long Island. Mrs. Frederick Apps and her son Russell B. Grove are already planning the addition of servants' quarters and storage space to the brand new residence they recently bought and to which they have moved at 3618 Anderson Road. The attractive white haired Mrs. Apps is truly a Coral Gables pioneer having been a winter resident and then permanent resident for the past 16 years. Mr. Grove is head of claims and safety of the Florida Power and Light Company. They formerly lived at 938 Sorolla. Charles (Bill) Brand, son of the Charles Brand's of 1025 Avenue Sevilla and a student at Cornell University, has as his guest at the Theta Xi house, during the 59th Junior Week activities, Miss Martha Godard of Miami Shores, who attends Middlebury College in Vermont. More than 1000 girls are in Ithaca for the festivities which began yesterday and will end tomorrow. Bill is editor-in-chief of his fraternity paper a twice weekly.
Mrs. Ralph Engle Will Entertain Woman's Club Poetry Group Monday
Mrs. Ralph L. Engle, poet laureate of the Coral Gables Woman's Club will entertain the poetry group of the club at 10:30 a. m. Monday at her home, 1207 Columbus Boulevard. Mrs. Engle will present Mrs. Isaac Diller, who will discuss the New England poets, also Miss Lelia White and Mrs. Thomas Ware talking about Carl Sandburg and the poetry of Edgar Lee Masters. The "Song Lyric" will be the topic of Mrs. Engle's paper and she is particularly anxious to have anyone interested in poetry to be present at this meeting. On Tuesday the interior decorating class got under way in the main club room. Mrs. Hester Parker, instructor of the first session outlining to the class just what the course will be and touching on some phases of modern improvements. Each study class will take two hours' time and some of the topics handled will be: Sense of successful decoration; Color and color schemes; Walls as decoration and background; Floors and their covering; Windows and their treatment; Arrangement and balance of furniture; furniture and its choosing; decorative textiles; artificial lighting; pictures and their framing; In spite of today's woman being active in so many projects she is still vitally interested in her home as was attested by the large number of "pupils" enrolling in this class. Mrs. Chas. J. Susong, First Vice-President of the Coral Gables Woman's Club, is also Gables Surgical Dressing Unit of the Red Cross now operating in the Deigaard Building on Giralda Avenue. Mrs. Charles Fuchs and Garden Club Members Will Honor New Members Monday
Mrs. Charles Fuchs, president of the Coral Gables Garden Club, will be hostess at a tea and reception for new members who will be honor guests of the club from 3 until 5 p. m. Monday at her home, 1101 Avenue Castile. Corsages will be presented to the 26 new members. Receiving with Mrs. Fuchs will be past presidents, Mrs. Howard Sullivan, Mrs. Evan D. Roser and Mrs. Worth St. Clair. Greeting guests at the door will be Mrs. Roy Boyce, Mrs. Fred Mizer and Mrs. George Corrigan. Mrs. Edward Everett Cady, Mrs. C. F. Weber, Mrs. Charles Miller and Mrs. Robert Pentland Sr., will preside and alternate at the tea urns. Assisting will be Mrs. Bessie Eubanks, Mrs. W. T. Foster and Mrs. J. D. Goff. A musical program will be given under the direction of Mrs. Fred Grinham, program chairman, and Mrs. C. Earle Giffen. Mrs. M. B. Garris and Mrs. Andrew Doleman will have charge of the guest book. At a recent board meeting the club voted $50.00 toward the Charles Torrey Simpson Memorial Fund.

British Flags Will Fly Friday Night Over Biltmore Club Lounge for Benefit Bridge
Historical banners and flags of the British Empire will decorate the lounge of the Miami Biltmore Country Club ballroom next Friday night for the benefit bridge and Chinese auction, sponsored by the Chaucer Chapter, Daughters of the British Empire, of Coral Gables. The party will begin at 8 p. m. and continue until 12. L. A. Oates, British Vice-Consul, will give a short timely address. Modern Biltomre and leading Coral Gables and Miami merchants have donated beautiful and costly gifts to help swell the proceeds. There will also be door and three grand prizes for highest scores. Proceeds will go towards buying a mobile kitchen for Britain. The Chaucer Chapter, with Mrs. T. G. Leitch, regent, will open its "Aid to Britain" shop this week at 208 Alhambra Circle. Space in the Renyart Arcade has been donated by the Renuart Realty Company. The inception of the idea of this shop, its sole purpose is to bring aid and comfort to the British people in their gallant struggle was the fact that most everyone has articles cumbering attics and closets for which they have no particular use. The Daughters of the British Empire would be more than pleased to have these unwanted articles: a book, a chair, an old dress, a worn pair of shoes, in fact kitchen utensils or anything and place them on sale at their shop proceeds going to the British aid fund. Tickets for the benefit bridge Valentine night will be on sale at the "Aid to Britain" shop and at the door the evening of the party.
Miss Rand Honors Recent Bride With Shower
Miss Frances Marie Rand complimented her sister-in-law, Mrs. Gerwood Rand, jr. recent bride, with a miscellaneous shower Friday night at the home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Gerwood Rand 115 Avenue Romano. A color scheme of pink and white was used. Present were Mrs. Ann Enders, Mrs. W. E. Taylor and the Misses Betty Harris, Ethel Scott, Mitzie Crosby, Nancy Nicholson, Hazel Thrall, Marie Galvin, Emily Condon, Jean Matthews, Estelle Zwolak, Norma Kessinger, Irma Hood, Peggy Cronk, Landa Lavita, Helen Ayers, Dorothy Tutwiller, Narcissa Guynes, Ann Harvey and Gladys Peacock. Mrs. Reginald D. Woodcock, will entertain the members of the Young Matrons Bible Class of the First Presbyterian church, at the regular monthly meeting Monday night at her home, 732 Avenue Aledo.
Southern Cross Chapter, U. D. C., Plans "Turn of the Century" Party
Southern Cross Chapter of the Daughters of the Confederacy will hold its annual bridge party for the benefit of its scholarship fund at 2 p. m. tomorrow at the Country Club of Coral Gables. Mrs. W. A. Cann is general chairman. Highlights of the party will be the parade of the belles of the 1900's dressed for the occasion, in the tightwaisted, highnecked and long skirts of that period, Mrs. W. A. Haggard and Mrs. Carolyn Dorothy, program and costumes chairmen, will have charge of the showing. Mrs. Henry Shaw, president of the chapter; Mrs. George E. Holt, Miss Phylis Walker, Mrs. R. E. Gallagher and Miss Pauline Corley have been active in arranging the costumes and script depicting Miami's early days. The Southern Cross chapter was organized in Miami in 1904.
Music Club Meets at Three Wednesday
Regular monthly program of the Coral Gables Music Club will be held at 3 p. m. Wednesday at the Woman's Club, preceded by a board meeting at 1:30 p. m. and a general meeting at 2:30 p. m. Sister Denise of Barry College will be presented playing her own compositions. Miss Velda Kelleher, accompanied by Eleanor Clarke Linton, will sing. E. E. Pennock, violinist, accompanied by Mrs. Florence Dunlop, will play.
Miss Margaret Beaton, librarian of the Coral Gables Public Library, will discuss the various books on music available for members at the library and also tell of the Saturday afternoon broadcasts of the Metropolitan Operas.
