Miles of Bridle Paths Make Coral Gables a Mecca for Horse Lovers

(2) James Glidewell mounted on "Iron Man". (3) John P. Gazlay riding "Independence Belle", owned by Mrs. O. G. Finkle. (4) Mrs. Andrew Bryan riding her horse "On Parade". (5) Mrs. Fanny Hoskins with '"On Parade". (6) John Gazlay, sr. driving "Gay Cadet". (7) Herbert Steiner mounted on his mare "Black Betty". (8) Gracia Lawless with her favorite horse "Dan McGregor". (9) Mrs. Clement B. Chinn conversing with her horse "Silver Sheik". (10) Mrs. O. G. Finkle, jr., on her horse "Gentleman Joe", accompanied by John P. Gazlay on "Search Light". The riders are members of the Coral Gables Riding Club.

(Continued from Page One) 1926. It is now known as the University Hospital. In August, Coral Way east of Douglas Road was opened to traffic, and the Coral Gables elementary school was completed. Hurricane Then came the Hurricane of September 18, 1926. Although the Gables was the least hurt of any Miami district community, the storm loss was set at $1,400,000. Most of the damage done was from awnings being destroyed and the awning frames breaking windows and letting rain into the houses. A few buildings of lighter construction were blown down and a few roofs were blown off-but the main damage was to the trees and shrubs which were uprooted and stripped. Although it received a body blow, Coral Gables came up fighting. Before the final puff of wind had blown, the work of reconstruction was planned and the Biltmore Hotel and Tallman Hospital became refuges for the injured and the homeless. On the Saturday night following the storm, 2200 homeless men, women and children from outlying districts were provided shelter at the Hotel by Harry Boardman, its resident manager. The Hospital was overflowing with patients and the 17 nurses and Dr. Tallman worked ceaselessly and tirelessly for over 72 hours. The Rev. Dr. Thomas Benjamin Powell, pastor of the Coral Gables Congregational Church, made his way to the hospital through the blinding wind and rain to administer to the dying and to encourage the injured.
