Summer parties may be the porch variety, the morning bridge, the dip in the surf, or the evening dance. They are usually informal and therefore more fun. Mr. and Mrs. Bradbury Barnes entertained 16 at dinner, served buffet style, Saturday night at their South Greenway drive home, preceding the dance at the Country Club of Coral Gables. Mr. and Mrs. Roy Page were there, the William H. Merriams, the George Corrigans, Mrs. Helena Elliot, Mr. and Mrs. Tom Fincher, the Rees Marshalls, sr., Lieut. Commander and Mrs. L. P. Clephane and Arthur B. Headley. ... Mr. and Mrs. Graham Place chose the cocktail hour Wednesday to introduce their brother-in-law Dr. Lionel D. Lawson of Spartanburg, S. C. About 30 gathered in the attractive new home of the Places, at 512 Avenue Almeria, the living room of which, combines the alluring and cool looking colors of turquoise and coral for a stunning effect.

Little Miss Susan Paisley Colville made her bow to this mad world June 8th at University hospital. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Bruce J. Colville (Betty Susong), and first granddaughter of Mr. and Mrs. Charles J. Susong . . . On June 9th same hospital, a son was born to Lieut. and Mrs. Thomas B. Carnahan who are living in Dean Henry West's home on Avenue Romano for the summer . . . And now up near the mountain top, word comes of the arrival of a daughter, born to Mr. and Mrs. Lewis Campbell Boyd, (Nell McGarry) Wednesday June 18, at Hendersonville, N. C., Mrs. Paul D. McGarry is in Hendersonville to welcome the first McGarry grandchild.

Mrs. Thomas P. Caldwell left Wednesday by plane for Jacksonville to spend about two weeks with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Harry B. Hoyt . . . Mrs. Homer C. Frazier, jr., 700 Avenue Valencia, is spending a few days with her sister, Mrs. Harvey Fell, jr. (Eleanor Harris) in her Atlantic home. . . . Mr. and Mrs. Donald F. Cordes 4504 Alhambra Circle, are in Denver attending the Rotary International Convention.

Mrs. Charles F. Flynn 2103 Country Club Prado has returned from Havana, where she spent several days on business and seeing friends . . . Mr. and Mrs. David W. Dyer 1120 Sunset drive, have returned from a trip to New Orleans and High Hampton, N. C., Charles F. Baldwin 2604 Desota Boulevard, returned Wednesday from Hendersonville, N. Y., where he accompanied Mrs. Baldwin and their son Jack.

Dr. and Mrs. Stephen Gibbs left Wednesday for Atlantic City, where Dr. Gibbs will attend the annual convention of Osteopath doctors. Later the Gibbs will visit in Middleton, N. Y. . . . Mr. and Mrs. Louie Lanford also left this week by motor for Hot Springs, Va., where Mr. Lanford will attend an insurance convention. Later the Lanford's accompanied by their son Bruce and Mrs. Lanford's mother will visit many northern points of interest.

Mr. and Mrs. Frank Holley, jr., have returned from Waynesville, N. C. where they placed their son, Buddy, in Laughing Owl Camp. The Holleys visited their former home in St. Mary's O., enroute to North Coralina, were gone only a week and traveled 3,000 miles . . . Jane Blackwood, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Roland Blackwood will leave July 1 for Brevard, N. C., where she will attend Camp Connestee.

Jack Morganthaler, son of Mr. and Mrs. H. W. Morganthaler, jr., received his master's degree, a new job and orders to report for duty in the United States army all within a couple of days. Jack, finishing his fifth year at Massachusetts Institute of Technology was awarded his batchelor of science' and master's degrees on the 10th. His new job is with the "Dravo" engineering company in Pittsburgh. This he would have filled at once, if the army hadn't called him to Ft. Belvoir, Va., where he will be stationed as a second lieutenant in the Reserves . . . Another Coral Gables boy called to the colors is Charles J. Susong, jr. who left Wednesday for California where he will be stationed at the army air base at Bakers Field air port.

Mrs. Robert Ramsey (Barbara Sycle) will leave Saturday for Detroit to join Mr. Ramsey after a two weeks visit with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Harold Sycle of 3225 Riviera Drive . . . Mrs. John T. Rowe left Thursday for Highlands, N. C., where she will again summer at the Tricemout Terrace . . . Col. and Mrs. P. J. O'Shaughnessy who are building a new home on Riviera drive are summering at Moody Farm, Franklin, N. C.

Mr. and Mrs. John M. Montgomery and Mr. and Mrs. L. Gordon Walters returned Wednesday from Havana where they spent the week end. They made the trip by clipper ship and celebrated the Montgomery's first wedding anniversary.

Mr. and Mrs. Albert E. Harum are arriving this week from New York to make their future and permanent home in the Gables. Mrs. Harum is the former Julia Davidson, daughter of the James H. Davidsons, winter residents of 1248 Coral Way. The Harums have two young sons, Albert E. jr., and J. Davidson, 6 and 5 years respectively. Incidenttally, Mrs. Harum, as Julia Davidson did newspaper work and conducted a column called, "Let's Join the Ladies".

Mr. and Mrs. Richard B. Roberts, jr., 717 Alhambra Circle are leaving tomorrow for an extended motor trip vacation. They'll be accompanied by their young son Bill, but no "knitting" Mr. Roberts says. Mrs. Roberts, has just fulfilled a long year of being knitting chairman in charge of distribution of yarns, and wools for Red Cross and has well earned her vacation. They will visit kinfolk and friends in Savanah, Ga., and Newark, N. J., in New Haven and New York and in Brooklyn will pick up Mr. Roberts' mother for the return trip.

Friends Learn Of Betrothal At Luncheon

Small white ribbon tied scrolls attached to corsages, revealed the engagement of Miss Myrtle Speyer and William J. Sheer to 16 intimate friends at a luncheon Saturday given by the bride-elect's mother. The wedding will take place August third in the patio of the First Presbyterian Church. Miss Speyer is the daughter of pioneer Miamians, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Speyer, of 422 Avenue Majorea, who came to Miami Beach in 1907. She attended Ponce de Leon High School and was graduated from the University of Miami. Mr. Sheer received his education in the New York schools. He is a draftsman and estimator for the Giffen Roofing Company of Coral Gables.

President Will Entertain Auxiliary

Members of the American Legion Auxiliary Coral Gables Post No. 98 will be entertained at the president's home 613 Avenue Navarre, Wednesday evening. Co-hostess with the president, Mrs. B. F. Landahl will be Mrs. Walter J. Rhodes. The auxiliary will also be hostess club to the Dade County council at the regular quarterly luncheon at 11:30 a. m. Tuesday. Mrs. A. L. Buxzell, sr., national department chairman, will preside. Mrs. L. A. Marvin is chairman of the luncheon.

Two Hundred Sign Up For Free Spanish

Dade County Federation of Women's clubs has named Mrs. Evan D. Roser, chairman of its defense program and Mrs. Alfred H. Patterson chairman of the free Spanish classes sponsored by the club as one of its defense projects. From an expected registration of 50, over 200 have signed up to take the free conversational classes in Spanish. Registration closes Monday. These classes taught by volunteer expert teachers will meet twice weekly both day and night classes in the Sunshine room of the Florida Power and Light Company.

Two Hundred Attend Tea For "Rushes"

More than 200 attended the Panhellenic tea for "girls going to college for the first time", Friday and Saturday at the Administration building of the University of Miami. Miss Lois Taylor, Miss Mary B. Merritt, Mrs. Frank E. Denton, Miss Eloise Patterson, Miss Barbara Garfunkel and Mrs. Thomas E. Mayes were among those receiving.

Pictured above is the attractive Mrs. Robert Bassett Meyer, the former Miss Mary Jane Davidson, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James Hayden Davidson of Coral Gables. Mr. and Mrs. Meyer are on their wedding trip and upon their return will live in Westerleigh, N. Y.

Friday's tea honored the girl pledges of the various sororities planning on entering the University. "Old" girls were distinguished by white name cards. Pledges wore blue and red. A patrician color scheme was carried out in the tea table appointments. Red white and blue flowers centered the lace covered table. The large silver punch bowls, gifts of the Town and Gown at either end were filled with red raspberry ice. Red and white ribbon sandwiches and cakes frosted in the colors were pretty.

ENTERTAINS FRIENDS

Miss Phyllis Porter, neice of Mr. and Mrs. Coulton Skinner was hostess Sunday at an informal party at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Skinner, 3811 Segovia Street; Supper was cooked on the outdoor grille in the garden for the 12 guests and games were the diversion of the evening. Joyce Hockaday, staff member of Jessie's Beauty Salon, is vacationing in Colorado and writes home that she has enjoyed various kinds of cold weather including a blizzard.

Mary Jane Davidson Becomes Bride of Robert Bassett Meyer

In a simple ceremony attended by members of both families, Miss Mary Jane Davidson, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James H. Davidson, of 1248 Coral Way, and Westerleigh, Staten Island, New York City, became the bride Saturday of Robert Bassett Meyer, son of Mrs. Henri A. Meyer, of Grassmere, Staten Island and the late Mr. Meyer. The wedding took place at six thirty o'clock in the evening, at the home of the bride's uncle and aunt, Col. I. James Lovell, at 42 Boulevard, Weelerligh. The Rev. Dr. Samuel Hefelbower, of the faculty of Wagner College, officiated. The bride wore a gown of traditional ivory satin, made with long leg o' mutton sleeves, fitted basque, and a full skirt looped at intervals at the hemline to show an underskirt of white pleated net. Her three quarter length veil was attached to a cap of antique rosepoint lace, a family heirloom, and she carried a bouquet of white orchids. Mrs. Clarence V. Reichelt, of West New Brighton, Staten Island, served as her sister's matron of honor and only attendant. She wore a toe-length gown of delphinium blue chiffon, and a straw bonnet decorated with pink roses and forget-me-nots, and carried pink roses and delphinium. James Hayden Davidson, Jr., brother of the bride, was best man for Mr. Meyer. A reception for 50 guests at the Lovell home followed the ceremony. Mrs. Meyer attended Ponce de Leon High School and the University of Miami, and transferred in her sophomore year to Wagner College, Staten Island, from which she was graduated in 1939. Mr. Meyer attended Wagner College, and is now employed by the Bethlehem Steel Corporation.

Miss Atkinson, Lieut. Hasencamp Betrothed—Wedding August 1

Mr. and Mrs. Douglas Atkinson of 1312 Avenue Asturia announce the engagement of their daughter, Miss Mary Lou Atkinson and Lieut. James Robb Hasenkamp, son of the late Mr. and Mrs. W. H. Hasencamp of North Platte, Neb. The wedding will take place Friday, the first of August at the First Presbyterian Church with a former classmate of Lieut. Hasencamp's performing the ceremony. Miss Atkinson was graduated from Ponce de Leon high school and has just completed her junior year at Florida State College for Women, Tallahassee, where she was president of Pi Beta Phi, social sorority; president of Mortar Board and a member of Pi Delia Phi, honorary French society. She was also in charge of Even Demonstration in 1940 and a member of Estere Honorary and Cotillion clubs. Lieutenant Hasencamp was graduated from the University of Florida in February and is stationed at Camp Lee, Va., at present. He is a member of Pi Kappa Alpha social fraternity; while in school held these fraternity offices: vice president, secretary and social secretary. He wa sa member of Scabbard and Blade, national military organization; Delta Sigma Phi, business fraternity and was on the Dean's list.

Bridge Tea Honors Guests Of Members

Piccadilly glads and white oleanders in lovely old yellow Chinese bowls decorated the ladies' lounge at the Miami Biltmore Country Club Tuesday, for the bridge tea honoring visitors and guests of members. About 50 attended the affair. The tea table covered with a lace cloth and centered with a punch bowl was placed in the nineteenth hole. Yellow gladioli decorated the table. Presiding at the coffee and tea urns were, Mrs. James Macfarlane and Mrs. Paul D. McGarry. Mrs. Roscoe Brunstetter, chairman of the bridge events, who has been away for several weeks returned in time to be present for the party.

Miss Pat Brandt, Miss Sarah Duke Bryant, Miss Mary Jane Lambeth and Miss Catherine Bell all of Coral Gables were among the 39 honor students from the Miami area for the second semester at Florida State College for Women at Tallahassee.

Capt. and Mrs. James H. Cunningham arrived Wednesday from New York and are the guests of Mr. and Mrs. L. Gordon Walters, of Hardee Road. Mrs. Cunningham will be remembered here as Miss Ruth Lutz, University of Miami graduate.
