by HELEN REYNOLDS HOME NOTE-Very likely you have passed the Walter Godbey "Ranchaloe" on Killian Drive, Kendall, on your Sunday afternoon country side drives. What makes the Godbey hacienda interesting, is the fact, Mr. Godbey, an Unger Buick associate, with a boy scout hatchet chopped the coral rock and fashioned with his own hands the first two units of their "five year plan" ranch home. Mrs. Godbey, besides being secretary to a busy Miami executive, is the new president of the Pilot Club, of which many members are Coral Gables residents. The Godbeys first intended their five acres to be a Persian Lime grove, but interest in the health-giving benefits of the "aloe" aided and abbetted by the assistance of a University of Florida graduate, who has since been called to the colors, decided the shift in the planting program. Now various kinds of rare fruit trees, plus the native kind are planted for the Godbey's use and for the pleasure of their many friends who drop in nearly every week end to this pretty country place. CAMPERS THREE-Robert (Bobby), Edward and Paul Shepard, sons of Mr. and Mrs. Leland C. Shepard, 419 Avenue Aragon, have made quite a name for themselves as campers extraordinare in the $75 1928, T. boy and Paul in park area. The boys left when school was closed, via their own jalopy plus all camping material, for the free camping grounds. There, they pitched camp. Bobby being "chef", Edward, "fire and water boy" and Paul, "kitchen police". It all works well and this week Mr. and Mrs. Shepard will visit their sons but only from the "safe" distance of the Highlands Inn. TRAVEL NOTES-Mr. and Mrs. Frank Headley and Mrs. Edward Brantley will leave Monday for the mountains of North Carolina, later they will be at the Waldorf-Astoria in New York City until October when they will return to Coral Gables ... Miss Lillie Chandler and her sister, Mrs. Chandler Sherman, left Saturday for Atlanta and other Georgia points for two weeks ... Mrs. W. J. Copeland, of 624 Avenue Catalonia, left this week for Weatherfield, Conn., and a visit with her son and daughter-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. I. S. Copeland, then to Elmira, N. Y., for the late summer and fall ... A. B. Headley, 137 Avenue Valencia, will leave tomorrow for Rochester, N. Y., where he will join Mrs. Headley who preceded him about three weeks ... Also leaving tomorrow by motor are Mr. and Mrs. Frank Holley, Jr., who will combine a business trip to New York with travel jaunts to the New England States. Returning they will stop in Warrensville, N. C., where Mrs. Holley will remain until Son Buddy has finished camp. HOME-COMERS-Mr. and Mrs. Charles Brand have returned to their Avenue Sevilla home after three weeks in Elmira, N. Y. They were accompanied north by Mr. Brand's mother, Mrs. Mabel Edgecomb also of Coral Gables, and home, by their son, William, a student at Cornell University ... Dr. Rothwell Lefholz, lieutenant in the U. S. Army, stationed at Ft. Bragg, N. C., is spending ten days with Mrs. Lefholz and their daughter, Nancy, at 4301 Monseratte Street ... Mr. and Mrs. Andrew N. Quentin, 709 Avenue Majorca, are home from an extended motor trip that took them as far as Quebec. They were accompanied by Mrs. B. W. Johnson, Jr., and Miss Meta Sinclair of Miami. On the return they drove into Gettysburg, Pa., July second just as the city was preparing to dedicate a monument, in which the whole town seemed to participate, parade, bands and everything. The Houstons found themselves in the "parade" with no turnouts allowed, so proceeded and sat in the reviewing stand immediately back of the famous Mary Pickford and Buddy Rogers. After it was all over and the Houstons were again on their way, they realized they had reviewed the soldiers from nearby Camp Carysle and helped dedicate a monument to one Longstreet, a Confederate general, but were they are wondering, is "what Mary Pickford had to do with it?" REFLECTIONS-With all of the patriotic colors now so popular in decor, very few were in evidence at the Riviera Country Club Fourth of July party. Claire Watkins, who cleverly edits the club's weekly bulletin wore red, white and blue stripped linen, with wedgies made of the same material. Someone asked her where in the world she was able to get a dress exactly like her shoes, said la Watkins, "Oh, I just made the dress from what was left from the shoes". The party seemed to be a grand succore-for they ran out of food, what with nearly 300, members their house guests and children in attendance. Strolling musicians, drinks cooling and soft, and music for dancing on the terrace were features ... Rain interferred with the patio dancing at the Country Club of Coral Gables, however 150 turned out for the affair. THEY TELL ME-The Chi Omega's have leased the beautiful Connor estate, corner Anderson Road and Avenue San Esteban, for their sorority house next season ... that the Kappa Kappa Gamma's are directing for the house on Granada Boulevard just vacated by the Chi Omega's ... that the Hill house, 707 Avenue Escabara occupied last season by the Zeta Tau Alpha's will again be their home next season, with repairs and satisfactory additions being worked out by the owner ... Sorority and fraternity houses and their leases have always been a matter of some concern to residential Coral Gables. DAUGHTER-GRAD-Mr. and Mrs. Phil Laurence, who went north to attend the graduation of their daughter, Miss Marcia Jean Laurence, from the University of Minnesota, alma mater of both parents, have returned accompanied by Marcia Jean, a Pi Phi, who will spend the summer here. The Laurences visited in New Orleans on the way, spent some time in Washington, D. C., on the return, and were away a month. MORE TRAVEL NOTES-The Albert H. Gleasons, accompanied by "Queenie," their police dog, left Tuesday afternoon by motor for an extended trip. They plan to visit in Carolina Mountains and the Great Smokies. On to Minnesota and then to New York and the New England States. Returning to New York, they will stay the month of October, returning to Coral Gables about the first of November ... Mr. and Mrs. Robert E. Backus, 431 Coral Way, accompanied by Mrs. Horace Van Brunt, will leave July 20 for Chicago, where they will board an American Express cruise train for an extended trip through the West and Pacific Coast.
