Gas Stations Here Ask Aid for Defense

Coral Gables gas stations to-day joined with Fuel Administrator Harold Ickes in asking motorists to help National Defense through gasoline conservation. In a combination advertisement in The Gables Riviera, the gasoline station operators pointed to the fact that their places of business are closed from 7 P. M. to 7 A. M. at the request of Mr. Ickes, and urged motorists to "do your part, we're doing ours." The advertisement also pointed out that by observing certain "Do's" and "Don'ts" gasoline can be conserved without too much discomfort to the car owner and that by faithful observance of these rules possible rationing of gasoline as a later date might be avoided. The gasoline stations co-operating in the plea are: Gables Shell Service Station Hank's Service Station Golden Gate Service Station Flamingo Tire Company Lou & Ira Service Station Norman's Service Station Grentner Bros. No. 2 Parks Motor Service Wallace Texaco Service Fletcher's Gulf Service Standard Oil Service Center Sam's Service Station The beautiful Venetian Pool was designed by Denman Fink, who still resides in Coral Gables.

We Are Doing Our Part - For National Defense - ARE YOU DOING YOURS?

We Are Doing Our Part For National Defense ARE YOU DOING YOURS? The Service Station operators of Coral Gables and vicinity are co-operating in the Gasoline Conservation Program by closing their stations at 7 P. M. daily in compliance with the request of Harold L. Ickes, Petroleum Co-ordinator. ★DO (1) Have your carbureter adjusted for the most economical mixture of gasoline and air. (2) Have ignition system and spark plugs checked regularly for most economical performance. (3) Keep transmission and differential properly lubricated, and lubricate chassis regularly. Use correct grade of lubricating oil in engine and change it regularly for maximum efficiency. (4) Keep the cooling system clean and filled to proper level. (5) Keep tires properly inflated. Keep brakes adjusted to eliminate "drag." ★DON'T (1) Don't speed. Driving at high speed greatly increases fuel consumption. Wind resistance increases by geometric proportion to speed. At 60 miles an hour it is four times greater than at 30. Drive at a reasonable, safe speed. (2) Don't make "jack-rabbit" starts. Driving in first and second gear multiplies the consumption of gasoline. Watch your starts at traffic lights—avoid sudden bursts of speed. (3) Don't let your car idle at the curb—don't race your motor when starting. This is hard on the motor and wastes gasoline. (4) Don't use your car unless you have to. Plan your driving. Group your errands. (5) Don't forget others. Share the transportation your car provides—double up with friends going the same way. You Can Help Too By Observing These DOs and DON'Ts Do it the voluntary, American way! "I hope that this (saving of gasoline) will be VOLUNTARY. I hope that this VOLUNTARY SAVING will be undertaken immediately. "If it is not, then we can only conclude that our many exhortations.. have fallen on indifferent ears, and that it will be necessary to put into effect some system of INVOLUNTARY RATIONING." HAROLD L. ICKES, Petroleum Co-ordinator for National Defense, in his radio address Monday evening, July 28 AMERICA FIRST, LAST and ALWAYS!
