In the Women's World

Brown is a leading color for fall and Gladys Swarthout, singing star of Columbia network's new "The Family Hour" series, selects for her first fall bonnet a brown felt pillbox trimmed with red and green ostrich plumes and gossamer veiling. Incidentally, ostrich feathers lead the list of hat trimmings this season. With it she wears a tailored suit of tobacco brown with white stripes. (From Valentina, New York.)

Streamlined satin striped formal is the favorite of CBS actress Lesley ("The Man I Married") Woods for first fall parties. It is of black faille with brilliant red, green and satin stripes manipulated so as to form a slimming center skirt "V." (Young America dance frock.)

Marilyn Thompson Will Become Bride of Grosse Point Man Today

Culminating a romance, begun when they were school chums in Grosse Point, Mich., Miss Marilyn Adele Thompson will become the bride of Elmer Albert Kundinger, Jr., at five o'clock this afternoon at the home of the bride's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Charles A. Thompson, Aragon Street at Segovia Circle. Dr. Nevin H. Schaaf, of the First Presbyterian Church will perform the ceremony before a small group of relatives and intimate friends. For her wedding Miss Thompson will wear a cadet blue street length wool sheer, with glove sleeves and square-cut neckline blouse trimmed in rows of fringe made of the material. Her flowers are orchids and her accessories will be white. At the reception following, the bride's table will be overlaid with a creme damask cloth and set with silver and crystal candelabra. An epernge of yellow button chrysanthemums and white gladioli will center the table. Assisting at the reception will be the grandmother of the bride-to-be, Mrs. A. J. Cronin, who will wear blue crepe and corsage of red roses. Mrs. Thompson will wear a silk print jersey street length gown and corsage. The couple will leave immediately following the reception by motor for New York City, stopping enroute at Tallahassee to visit sorority sisters of the bride-to-be. For travel the bride will wear a plaid wool suit of many shades of blue. Miss Thompson attended Ponce de Leon High School, where she was a member of Pi Beta Nu sorority and last year she attended Exmoor School. Mr. Kundinger, Jr. graduated from the Grosse Point High School and attended Michigan State University, where he was pledged Kappa Sigma. Upon their arrival in Grosse Point, where they will make their future home, the couple will be given a large reception at the home of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. E. A. Kundinger, Sr., in Devonshire Road.

Mrs. Schmidt's Nut Bread Sounds As Good as Her Fried Chicken

Mrs. Ben Schmidt, past president of the Coral Gables Woman's Club and a former prominent club woman of Covington, Ky., contributes the recipe of the week—corn bread—as served with her very special and most beloved dish, southern fried chicken. Mrs. Schmidt also gives to The Riviera her specially delicious "Nut Bread" recipe, and with a new crop of nuts, so to speak, just around the corner, this recipe may well be noted. The Schmidt's live at 2417 North Greenway Drive and have loved Coral Gables "just as well," they say, as their native Kentucky. They have three attractive grandchildren, Jane, Henry B., Jr., and Ann Gayle, children of their son, Henry B. Schmidt of Covington and Cincinnati, who visit them frequently, as well as many relatives, brothers and sisters from Kentucky. The late Colonel and Mrs. J. H. Smith, who wintered for many years in one of Coral Gables' most picturesque bungalows at 447 Coral Way, were Mrs. Schmidt's parents. Mrs. Schmidt says her corn bread recipe is one used extensively in Kentucky and is a never-fail standby: 1 tablespoon shortening | 1 cup (water ground) meal | 1⁄2 cup sugar | 1⁄2 teaspoon salt | 2 eggs well beaten | 1 tablespoon baking powder (Mrs. Schmidt always uses Royal). | 1 cup milk | 1 cup flour Cream shortening. Add eggs, milk, cornmeal—lastly flour which has been sifted with the salt and baking powder. Bake twenty minutes in hot oven. Nut Bread Mrs. Schmidt calls this recipe her "Five One's"—that makes it easy to remember. She also says to note the absence of shortening in the recipe, but oil in the ground nut meats take care of that. 1 egg | 1 cup milk | 1 cup dates | 4 cups flour | 1 cup sugar | 4 teaspoons baking powder (Royal) | 1 cup nut meats Mix all together and put in loaf pan. Let stand 15 minutes; this is a very important step and should not be overlooked. Bake 45 minutes in a medium oven.

Girls Leave Heavy Makeup To Their Elders

Girls look forward to owning a lipstick as boys do owning a razor. That is the observation of a woman whose work brings her into contact with the high school age. There is something adult and sophisticated about a lipstick that appeals to the young set and helps its members believe that they have left childhood behind them. But with all the emphasis upon lipsticks, the general average of face-scrubbing among the 'teeners has never been higher, says this authority. The pert young miss of today has her own sensible philosophy about make-up and appearance. She figures that she has a dewy freshness to display which needs only the enhancment such as soap and water and a lipstick can give, and she is content to leave the heavy make-up to older women. The schoolgirl who values her complexion washes her face with soap and water at least three times a day—on the morning when she arises, in the afternoon when she returns from school and at night before she retires. After each soapy washing she rinses thoroughly, first with warm water and then with cold. Drying should be thorough but not too vigorous, and with a towel that is spotlessly clean.

LESSON-SERMON ANNOUNCED

Churches of Christ, Scientist "Matter" is the subject of the Lesson-Sermon which will be read in Churches of Christ, Scientist, throughout the world on Sunday, September 21. The Golden Text is: "Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world" (I John 2:15). Among the citations which comprise the Lesson-Sermon is the following from the Bible: "For we know that if our earthly house of this tabernacle were dissolved, we have a building of God, an house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens. Now he that hath wrath wrought us for the self-same thing is God, who also hath given unto us the earnest of the Spirit" (II Cor. 5:1, 5). The Lesson-Sermon also includes the following passage from the Christian Science Textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," by Mary Baker Eddy: "Spirit, God, has created all in mind of Himself. Spirit never created matter. There is nothing in Spirit out of which matter could be made, for, as the Bible declares, without the Logos, the Aeon or Word of God 'was not anything made that was made.'" (p. 335: 7-12.)

COLORFUL DESSERT

Strictly a two-timer is the colorful dessert favored by Mrs. C. F. Flynn, of 2103 Country Club Prado, as the perfect finale for a dinner party; for it combines both cordial and sweet in an eyefilling picture. Fill the hollow stem of your champagne glasses with creme de minthe liqueur, and top with a scoop of vanilla, then a scoop of green ice cream. Serve with transparent green straws.
