Ponce Notes
Class presidents for this year are Fairfax Montague with Dick Houston as runnerup, junior class; Bill Prahl over Jack Bennett, sophomore class, and Jack Brazington over Kathryn Peek, freshman class. The senior president will not be known until another vote is taken because of the lack of co-operation of two homerooms that failed to vote. Returns will be published in the next issue. "I'm so surprised and excited", said the 'Club Sweet' idea went senior, Kitty Lou Hoffman, when she learned that she had been chosen the "Sweetheart of the Key Club." Kitty Lou will add the feminine touch to the Key Club meetings; she has already received her own Key Club pin. Ponce is the second school in Florida to have a girl sponsor. A new club, with the mystic name of P. S. C., was organized October 7, sponsored by Miss Freda O'Nell. The three main purposes of the club are physical fitness, happy living and community interests. Seventy-four per cent of the 1941 graduation class are now attending universities and colleges in Florida and other states. The second annual Ponce debate festival will be held at Ponce under the auspices of the Ponce Debating Society, Wednesday, November 5, according to Mrs. Herberta Leonardy, sponsor. The guard organization sponsored by the Key Club is composed of 30 boys and girls whose main duties are to enforce hall regulations, regulate traffic between classes. They are also in charge of keeping the campus clean. Dick Houstoun, chairman of the Key Club guard committee, heads the organization this year. Over $3000 in scholarships were awarded to three members of last year's band by the University of Miami. Winners were Bill Prendergast, Charles Mills and Richard Motter. To be worn at all the basketball games and to alternate with the regular costumes on other occasions, black satin skirts are being made this semester by the mothers of the Cavaleers. The twirlers are also working on new uniforms patterned along the old Spanish style. New hats and special shoes will complete the costume. "Spoons in the dishwasher" has been suggested as a project for the newly organized Biology Club, which has for its aims the promotion of original investigation by the students, problems related to human affairs. Miss Ann Gilkey, head of the biology department, is sponsor of the group.
Defense Quiz
Q. Do retail stores receive any fee or percentage for the sale of stamps? A. No. The retail stores are offering their facilities as a patriotic service, just as banks, savings and loan associations, and others are giving their help in the sale of Defense Bonds. Q. How can I form the thrift habit necessary for me to buy many Defense Bonds now, to help the Government? A. The easiest way is to instruct your employer or banker to hold back a small fraction of your salary or other income. Even 10 cents a day and a dollar on your birthday will mount up in one year to $37.50, the purchase price of a $50 Defense Bond. Bigger savings buy bigger bonds. Note-To buy Defense Bonds and Stamps, go to the nearest post office, bank or savings and loan association; or write to the Treasurer of the United States, Washington, D. C.
Power Company Rushes Work On New Plant
All major equipment for the new 30,000 - kilowatt generating unit of Florida Power & Light Company's Miami Beach power plant has been received and is now being installed, at the construction of the new building progresses. William D. Fuller, Coral Gables manager, stated yesterday that the ful tanks and circulating water system are now completed and that piping for the huge boiler is now being put into the new structure, which is 60 per cent completed. There has been no delay in receiving materials and machinery, because the Federal Priorities Board classifies electric plants as important defense aids. The new turbo-generator, capable of producing 30,000 kilowatts of electricity, will arrive this month, and engineers will immediately begin its final assembly and installation. Company officials anticipate that the new unit will be ready for operation early in December. With its addition to the statewide interconnected system of Florida Power & Light, the company's generating capacities will aggregate about 210,000 kilowatts. Co-operating with the Government and other private utility companies in a nation-wide plan for interconnected power to meet defense needs, Florida Power & Light has completed a temporary interconnection with the Florida Public Service network at Sanford, and the permanent installation of high-power lines will be completed there within about six weeks. Work has also been started near Lake City on a similar interconnection with the Florida Power Corporation. With its completion about November 1, the combined generating capacities of these separate systems will be available for any emergency. Such inter-company connections, including interconnection with Federal power systems, such as the Tennessee Valley Authority, are being made throughout the nation, in accordance with the Government's plan of national defense.
Candidates for class presidents at Ponce are, from right to left, first row: Alan Hutton, Phillip Dorn, Kathryn Peek and Jack Brasington. Standing are: Bill Prahl, Jack Bennett, Fairfax Montague and Dick Houston.
Insurance Data Shows a Decrease In Deaths During 1st Half of '41
Mid-year life insurance statistics indicate that the first half of 1941 has seen a slight reduction in the death rate, nationwide, in spite of increased dates rates in some of the major causes of death. Heart disease is still the leading cause of death, showing a 2 per cent increase over the previous corresponding period, when an all-time high in deaths from this cause was set. Cancer, the second cause of death, also showed a slight increase over 1940. Diabetes shows a slight decrease, about 3 per cent, from 1940, indicating a break in the long period of continued increase in deaths from this cause. Nephritis also showed an improvement, the death rate from this cause dropping about 7 per cent from last year. Appendicitis, though not a major cause of death, showed the greatest rate of improvement, 14 per cent lower than in 1940. Deaths from this cause are now at an all-time low. Deaths from auto accidents show an increase, and although homicide in the home decreased, total accident deaths are up 10 per cent.
MOTORISTS URGED TO GET CARS INSPECTED NOW
Coral Gables motorists who have not yet had their cars inspected were urged to do so today by Police Captain Lou Reeves. "We do not wish to issue tags to car owners who have not yet complied with the law," Reeves said," and if the local people will co-operate with us it will be necessary in only a very few cases.
Glove Glamor Enhanced by Cleanliness
(Continued from Page 2) you use. Because of its mildness and the velvet suds it makes, the new and improved version of an old favorite is a safe bet if you take the ordinary precautions. Should your gloves be labeled washable, and usually they, if colored, have been properly dyed, work up a lather of velvet suds and wash them either on or off your hands. Remember that white gloves will stand soaking, but colored gloves will not. Be sure your suds are generous and froth high over the wash bowl. Rinse gently in clear, lukewarm water-if a little soap remains in the gloves such as chamois, the result will be more successful. Wringing them out, of course, is disastrous, so roll them out in a towel. After most of the excess moisture has been removed, pull them into shape and lay out flat but not near heat. If your gloves come out stiff as a board or streaked, don't blame yourself or the soap-they just weren't washable in the first place.

Assembly Greets New Ponceites
Welcome to all freshmen and new students was the theme of the first assembly held in the gymnasium vice-president of the Student Council Eugene Shaw presided, with Bill Pierce as speaker. Speakers who welcomed the were Principal H. N. Rath, Mrs. freshmen and new students Susan N. Archer, dean of girls, and Mr. Elmer Day, dean of boys. The deans discussed their duties with the new students, and invited them to come to their offices at any time. Cheerleaders Leighton Peebles, Betty Ellis, Daniel Hanford, Bill Prahl, and Dick Baker led the assembly in songs and cheers Of the many selections that were played by the band "Daddy" was the favorite. Informality was a prominent note in the pep assembly held before the Ponce-Miami High game last Thursday. The only serious side was the installation of Jack Booher as Student Council president by Principal H. N. Rath.
A future Johnny Weissmuller, Bill Pierce represented Ponce de Leon as Dade County champion in the swim meet held at Matheson Hammock Sept. 21, Sunday afternoon, under the auspices of the Dade County Recreation Association.
