In the Women's World
STRAIGHT FROM NEW YORK
PEPLUMS ARE POPULAR The new "interrupted silhouette" this year is achieved with peplums, tiers and tunics. This New York creation features perky, pleated peplum that fastens on like a little apron over this featherweight wool dress in typical red. Slanted pockets are hidden beneath the peplum to complement the high pockets on the bodice. The look is soft and feminine, typical of this season's fashion trend. In California it's slacks by day and slacks by night for many of the best dressed femmes, for slacks, have been styled to fit any occasion but the most formal. Here, Jean Vander Pyl wears the new tunic type slacks ensemble of men's wear natural gabardine with intricate detailing. Notice the odd shaped pockets, rounded shoulders and impeccable tailoring. (Designed by Agnes Barrett, Los Angeles.) Fringed Formals are favored by many this year. Here you see an especially effective model featuring a white fringe bolero, black pleated skirt and lipstick red belt. Fringe is one of the most flattering means of trimming, and is being used by many designers for after-five frocks as well. (Patricia Perkins Original.) Shirley Temple is growing up, and the famous young star is shown here in one of her new winter ensembles. It is a bolero dress of beige wool with blouse of white crepe, and trimmed from neckline to hemline in self buttons. Her glorified beanie of beige wool is topped off with white coque feathers. Typically Californian is this unusually necklace of Jacaranda pods worn by pretty CBS actress Audis Davis. They are painted and antiqued in fall foliage shades, and strung on strips og bright leather. He off-the-face hat of gold suede cloth has a double headband embroidered in bright orange wool, as is the ruffled brim. (From John Frederics, Beverly Hills, Calif.)
Diary of a Beauty Authority
By HELENA RUBENSTEIN NEW YORK—Beauty secrets ofttimes are hidden in strange places, and to a beautician it's like a game seeking them out. Sometimes they are found only after years of laboratory research; sometimes they are right under our eyes. If you have ever watched a cat, you have seen a sleepy ball of fur open one eye, uncoil itself and indulge in a long luxurious stretch or series of stretches before it streaks over the garden wall. The cat spends so much of its time sleeping, or lapping up quantities of cream, and yet it manages to remain lithe and supple, and to many the most superbly graceful of all creatures. For years I have been fascinated by the utter relaxation of the cat, and yet it wasn't until recently that I realized that there was a secret to be learned from this lovely animal. So I set about the task of studying cats of all kinds—from the lean gray alley variety to the fluffy, aristocratic Persian pets. Out of this absorbing study, I learned that the secret of the cat's grace and beauty is its s-t-r-e-t-c-h. Cats are expert stretchers. They know instinctively how to draw every muscle out to its full extent, not with quick, straining jerks, but with long, slow, incredibly graceful motions. A cat stretches with complete abandon, as if there were nothing in the world quite so important at stretching. In doing this, the circulation, which slows down during sleep, is restored. Thus, by frequent and thorough stretching, the cat offsets the effects of its rather sedentary existence. Now the modern woman also leads a rather sedentary existence. Like Mrs. Cat, who occasionally indulges in an orgy of tree-climbing, she has periods of intense activity—such as an evening of dancing, or a no-occasional day on the tennis courts. But the greater part of her life is spent sitting—in her car, at the dinning table, at the theater, at her desk. To offset the unfortunate effects of this inactivity, which so often results in a lumpy, thickening figure, I have created a series of special exercises based on the same principle of feline grace which we see in the cat. We call them the "Cat-Stretch" exercises, and they proved immensely popular when they were demonstrated recently at a beauty show in my New York salon. The Cat-Stretch exercises consist of long, slow movements that help you build long, smooth muscles that give your figure a lithe, youthful grace. You can perform them morning or evening. (If you would like to have a series of Cat-Stretch exercises, with illustrations, to follow out at home, simply write to Helena Rubinstein, in care of this paper.) Next: Treatment for Dry Skin

Taste-Tempting Dishes Lure Everyone to Dinner Table
Creamed turkey in festive rice ring is a delicious hot fresh dish made from cold left-over turkey. Try it with yesterdays left-overs. Taste-Tempting Dishes Lure Everyone to Dinner Table By PHILLIP LEWIS By the time you read this, Thanksgiving will have gone and now we look forward to Christmas and its traditional feasting. To plan a real Christmas dinner we still have four weeks, so between now and then let's map something really different. Here are some taste-tempting desserts: Almond Custard Pudding | 1/4 cup sugar | 1/4 teaspoon salt | 3 tablespoons flour | 1/4 teaspoon almond flavoring | 2 cups milk | 2 eggs (separated) | 1/2 cup of any dry cereal | 4 tablespoons confectioners sugar Mix sugar, salt, flour and milk in double boiler, cook until thick. Add egg yolks, cereal, flavoring. Pour in buttered baking dish, cover with merengue made from whites of eggs and confectioners sugar—Bake 15 min. 350 degrees. Lemon Sauce Pudding | 1 tablespoon butter | 1 cup sugar | 1 lemon (small) | 1 cup of milk | 2 tablespoons flour | 2 eggs separated Cream butter, add sugar, add flour, lemon juice and rind beaten egg yolks and milk. Fold in egg whites. Cook in baking dish, set in pan of hot water, moderate oven until nice and brown on top. Brown Sugar Rice Pudding Beat one egg, add one can condensed milk, beat until creamy, add one cup cooked rice, 1/4 teaspoon vanilla flavor. Pour in buttered dish, sprinkle freely with brown sugar. Bake in oven 275-300 degrees. 20 min. Baked Pear Surprise Grind 30 graham crackers fine, mix with 1/8 lb. melted butter. Pat down firmly in medium size baking sheet, select required amount of canned pears, dry them, place a maraschine cherry in the under side of pear and lay on sheet 3in apart. Cover each one with a merengue made from 3 egg whites, 6tbs. confectioners sugar, 1/2 teaspoon vanilla. Bake in slow oven 300 degrees until brown about 15 min. Farina Ice Box Pudding Cook four tablespoons of Farina with 2 cups of milk until down. Beat 2 egg yolks and add 4 tablespoons sugar, then beat well, add 1 teaspoon van., pinch of salt, mix with Farina. Pour into a mold and set in ice box until cold, serve with vanilla sauce. For The Hubby Toast one or two slices of bread, spread with ground meat about 1/2in thick. Place a very thin slice of onion on top salt and pepper to taste, dash a few drops of A-1 Sauce, a few drops of Worchestershire Sauce and spread freely with Escoffier Sauce Robert. Broil until done, about 5 min. Serve with a cold glass of beer. Welsh Rabit Put one table spoon butter in pan, let melt, add 1 tablespoon flour, stir, add 1/2 cup of beer and cook for a few minutes. Add 1/2 lb. American cheese (grated), season with salt and pepper (cayenne) stir, when melted, add 4 tablespoons cream. Serve on buttered toast.
Glamour Gowns Take Diadem
Artful Applique treatment on the bodice and sleeves of this dinner dress, makes this simple model very high style. Notice how the light blue crepe is joined to the black with silver embroidery, which is carried out in leaf and flower mitif on the sleeves and bodice. (Designed by Patricia Perkins.) Glamour Gowns Take Diadem Glamour gowns for important occasions can do as much to give you a top-of-the-world feeling as a letter from your best beau. New in the glamour department are the street length dinner dresses. They sparkle with sequins, twinkle with jet or paillettes, yet make your escort feel it doesn't matter in the least that he didn't wear a tux. What provides inspiration for design, so many women wonder. A vacation trip to Nevada is the answer designer Zoe de Salle gave at her recent fall showing. Her creations are named for such points of interest as Carson City, Club Fortune, Virginia City, and Tahoe. And the costume designs they inspired were an ensemble of black wool skirt set on a long bodice of white silk, worn with a matching black wool coat; a great cape of wine velveteen with deep collar edged in mink; a tailored five-to-nine dress of silver lame with an amusing apron of grey velveteen; and a short dinner dress in Lake Tahoe blue with embroidered crown monogram. Fashion Flashes: When you're having your next formal frock made buy an extra yard of material for matching elbow gloves. Alice ("Philip Morris Playhouse") Frost improves on this fad by matching the gloves and frock with an evening bag too... And speaking of matching things, you can now look at the world through rose colored frames. Optometrists are making frames for glasses in bright colors to match your gay accessories. We previewed the new resort line of Tackroom prints by Celanese. Be sure you have a classic sports frock in one of their amusing designs inspired by the far west—cowboy's boots and spurs, saddles and ten-gallon hats—on gay backgrounds. Or for dressier frocks, choose one of the unusual floral designs combining purple, magenta and green on white backgrounds, or geranium pink, green and blue on pastel backgrounds. It's a popularity draw between large and small prints. Linings are more than a functional fashion these days. Milliners are using gay taffeta linings in black hats, and Elizabeth ("Quaker Girl") Reller has her black turban lined in bright red. Tailors are lining coats and jackets in material to match your blouse.
