In the Women's World

STRAIGHT FROM NEW YORK BE PICTURESQUE Evening gowns this winter are dramatic. They "do things" for you—give you glamour and an air of distinction. An outstanding style is this portrait gown with striking molded top, sweeping skirt. It is a New York creation of black crepe and flesh-colored satin.

Borrowed from the men are both the fabric and styling of this sport szuit tailored and worn by Eileen Tremayne of the CBS "Stepmother" cast. Of grey herringbone, it is collarless and trimmed with woven leather buttons. The slim skirt has flat inverted pleats to give it width, and her pork pie hat of matching material is branded in grosgrain ribbon. Incidentally, Eileen makes most of her own clothes, as do many other CBS radio actresses.

Gay wool plaids are favored by CBS singing star Ginny Simms for the casual life she leads away from the radio studios. She is shown here in the garden of her Hollywood home wearing a twopiece brown and tan suit, featuring the pleated skirt, patch pockets and small notched collar. This is an excellent year-round suit, for under fur coats or resort wear. (From Adele Sportswear, Los Angeles)

An odd, delightful soup stirs guests to their sparkling best and is happy beginning indeed to the meal. You will notice that condensed consomme is the base—the chief reason the soup is easy to make: 1 can condensed consomme 1/2 cup water 2 tablespoons apple butter 1/2 cup heavy cream, heated 1/4 teaspoon curry 1/2 teaspoon lemon juice To the consomme, add the water and apple butter. Heat and stir the soup mixture. Then add the hot heavy cream and the 1/2 teaspoon curry mixed with a little of the soup. Remove from the fire, add the lemon juice and serve immeriately. Serves 3or 4.

Only 12 Days Left to Plan Your Gala Christmas Dinner

By PHILIP LEWIS Just about now we see signs everywhere telling us about the number of shopping days left before that great day, Christmas. The housewife is interested as much in the number of cooking days left before Christmas—because our Christmas dinner is not prepared in one day nor in one week. Well we've got it all figured out: here just 12 cooking days left to map the finishing touches for the feast of feasts. From time to time we've given you our recipe for component parts of the holiday dinner. To-day we're going to tell you how to prepare Chocolate Souffle. To make a souffle just remember that in most cases it is a cream sauce of the right consistency with egg whites carefully folded in—with the right temperature you should have good luck with it. Chocolate Souffle 2 tablespoons butter 2 tablespoons flour 3/4 cup milk (hot) 1/2 cup sugar Pinch of salt 2 eggs separated 2 squares chocolate (melted) 1/2 teaspoon vanilla Melt chocolate in hot milk, blend well. Melt butter, add flour, add milk and chocolate gradually, cook until smooth and thick, stirr all the time. Add sugar, salt, and beaten egg yolks, let cool, beat whites stiff, fold into mixture. Turn into buttered baking dish, set in pan of hot water. Bake 350 degrees for 45 minutes or until firm. Serve with whipped cream or plain cream. Orange Souffle Juice of three oranges, rind of one orange, 1 cup of water (heat, in pan till hot) 1 tablespoon butter 1 heaping tablespoon of flour 4 eggs separated 6 tablespoons sugar Meat of two oranges Melt butter, add flour, stir well, add orange juice and water, stir until smooth. Remove from fire, let cool. Beat egg yolks with sugar, fold in stiffly beaten egg whites, butter bottom of baking dish, put oranges in dish, pour in souffle, sprinkle top with sugar. Bake in oven 350 degrees until raised and brown on top about 30-45 minutes. Prune Souffle 1 cup prune juice 1 tablespoon butter 1 heaping tablespoon flour 2 tablespoons brandy 1 teaspoon lemon juice 1 cup mashed cooked prunes 4 eggs(separated) 1/2 cup sugar Pinch of salt Melt butter, add flour, mashed prunes, prune juice and salt. Stir well until smooth, let cool. Beat egg yolks, a dd sugar, lemon juice and brandy. Mix with above well. Fold in stiffly beaten whites of eggs. Butter a dish, pour mixture in, sprinkle with sugar. Put dish in hot water, bake in oven 325 degrees for 20 minutes. Serve with whipped cream. Ginger Souffle 2 tablespoons butter 4 tablespoons flour 3/4 cup milk 1/4 cup sugar 2 oz. preserved ginger (chopped) 1/4 teaspoon ground ginger 3 eggs(separated) Melt butter, add flour. Add milk slowly, stir till thick and smooth. Remove and cool. Add sugar, preserved ginger, ground ginger and egg yolks one at a time. Fold in stiffly beaten whites carefully. Pour in bak- ing dish. Set in hot water, bake in oven 350 degrees for 45 minutes. Serve with cream thinned with syrup from drained preserve ginger.

Soapy Bath Will Keep Roaster Bright and Clean

When the juicy brown turkey is lifted out of the pan on Christmas Day, or when the humble week-day roast is transferred to the platter, there remains the most dreaded of house-hold tasks—the cleansing of the roaster. Hard brown crusts seem to be all over it, and particularly in the grooves and curves. Sometimes the juices have spread to the outside, too, while the cook was basting the meat. There is a quick and easy way to wash the roaster, that takes out all the unpleasantness and all the hard work. Just as soon as the meat is removed, the gravy made and dished, fill the pan to the brim with warm soapy water. Do it immediately, before the clotted juices have had time to set. If the outside of the pan has also become browned, set the whole pan into a larger container of warm suds, and fill the roaster with soapy water, as already suggested. By the time dinner is over and dishwashing is begun, all the particles which are so difficult once they have become hardened, can be removed with the least amount of effort. Any especially stubborn bits will loosen easily if rubbed with steel wool dipped in sudsy water. Treated in this way, the once-dreaded roasting pan becomes no more of a cleansing problem than any other item in the dishpan.

"Touch of White" At Throat Comes Back Into Vogue

That "little touch of white at the throat", which has come down through the years as one of the most flattering of costume devices, is abundantly in evidence again this season. Its most prevalent form this year is the tailored collar or dickey, worn to relieve the severity of round necklines. The school girl and the business woman alike have made these mandatory for wear with sweaters, shirt-waist dresses, and other sports-type clothe. The collar worn with tailored clothes are usually simple and tailored, depending entirely upon their crisp whiteness for ornament. With long hair-do's resting on the back, fur trimmed coats rubbing against them, and the natural secretions of the skin, the collars do not remain in pristine condition very long. Two wearings are about the limit. After that they are candidates for the washtub. Luckily, the collars are usually washable. The cotton and linen ones can be laundered like a hankerchief, using hot soapy water. Silk or rayon neckwear should be washed in lukewarm suds. The ones that are made of double thicknesses of cloth, as many of them are, often iron back to correct shape more readily if long basting stiches are taken along the outer edges before laundering. This keeps the collars from getting a warped appearance if the material has been cut on the bias, or if the under side has been cut on a different angle from the upper side. For good grooming, the collars must be immaculate. They won't stay clean for long, but they can be made clean so readily that only a very careless girl would consent to wear a collar that isn't spotlessly fresh.

QUICK CLEANSING FOR CLOSETS

Lint and dust can be removed from the floor of clothes closets, without taking out the clothes, by wiping the floor with a clean cloth wrung out in warm soapy water.
