Century Club Gala Christmas Ball Tomorrow Night At Biltmore
Gablesgrams BY HELEN REYNOLDS
No musical instruments came baby Laura Benita's way this Christmas, just a dolly, baby buggy and tricycle were Santa's gifts. However, "Laurie", as she is affectionately called by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Kistler looks into a musical future with all the assurance her 20 months can command. The Kistlers who recently moved into their own attractive home at 825 Avenue Andalusia are accomplished musicians; Mrs. Kistler, a cellist and Mr. Kistler, a violinist. Both were members of the University of Miami Symphony Orchestra in their college days. No more unusual Christmas card was received yesterday than the one Mr. and Mrs. Paul Warde received from Mr. and Mrs. Leon Perkins, now in Brazil. Some six inches square, the card was completely covered on the face side with typical South American figures, carried a Yule tide greeting in Portuguese. Mrs. Perkins will be remembered here as the much feted guest of her aunt and uncle, the W. Scott Demings. Mr. Perkins is an executive with the telephone company. Rushing back to Washington to spend Christmas with her husband Roswell P. Rosengren recently, was Mrs. Rosengren and their son Eric pictured here, in the home of her father, Garfield Lankard Miller, Sr., 920 Avenue Algaringo. Mrs. Rosengren will be remembered as the former Miss Marion Miller, popular member of the younger Coral Gables set. Eric is two and one half years old. Mr. Rosengren is head of the speakers bureau in the war department of the government. The Rosengrens live in Arlington, Virginia. A numerologist once told the attractive Mrs. J. Lawrence Kelley that she had too many "doubles" in her name. Christened Anne Malette Moorehead and acquiring the name of Kelley in marriage, the numerologist advised Mrs. Kelley to drop some of those "e's" but Mrs. Kelley is not worrying about that. She has been very successful in assisting the Housekeepers club in Coconut Grove of which she is membership chairman, in securing 31 new members. These new members were inducted into the club at the club's recent annual Christmas party. Christmas was made double happy for Mr. and Mrs. John E. Oberne and their young daughter, Penelope Ann, whose very first birthday anniversary is being celebrated today, for Penelope was born December 26th, 1940, in Coral Gables and that makes her a full fledged American. The attractive Mrs. Oberne is a Canadian and soon will have her second papers for citizenship passed. (Takes three years residence) She is a portrait painter, having done several portraits of well-known Canadians. Mrs. Oberne studied in New York, London, Paris and Vienna. Mr. Oberne is a native of Knoxville, Tenn. They live at 35 Sunrise Avenue. Special guests at the Walter Wigman eggnog party yesterday were Kirk A. Landon, of Baltimore, his daughter, Eileen Landon, student at a Blackston, Va. girl's school, and son Robert Landon at school in Warrenton, Va. The Landons arrived Tuesday at "Curwig Pines" to spend two weeks—were guests of honor at Christmas Day dinner of eight. Doris and Barbara Snow, from left to right, are the attractive daughters of Capt. George W. Snow, 2522 Madrid Street. Barbara, who completed her course at the Scott Carbee school of art in Boston, plans a career in the commercial art field. Doris is a student at Ponce de Leon High school. Capt. Snow, who has the title of major in the reserves, is a pilot for Pan-American on the Rio flight. The Junior Cotillion will dance from 7:30 to 10 tonight to the tunes of an eight piece orchestra at their first formal party. The party will be Christmas and New Years all rolled into one with favors and noise makers for all. The ball will be held at the usual meeting place, the Woman's Club with George Copinius directing. Mr. and Mrs. Robert Meyer of Westerleigh, Staten Island, N. Y., have arrived for a Christmas visit with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. James H. Davidson, 1248 Coral Way. Mrs. Meyer, who will remain for part of the season, will be remembered here as Mary Jane Davidson, before her marriage last June. Mr. Meyer will return to New York at the end of two weeks. All photos in this column are from the A. Derby Pilkington studio.

U TALK BY BARBARA BROWNE
When university students went down in diving helmests last week at Rainbow Springs, all of the cameramen from the big newsreel companies were there to photograph the expedition under water. Pretty good, what! The class room scenes under water are showing now at Miami theatres so don't think that your eyes are playing tricks on you if you recognize a familiar face in the newsreel. Queen Patty Hollarn T'was a thrilling moment when Patty Hollarn, Zeta Tau Alpha, was crowned Queen of Clubs at the Pi Chi dance on a recent Friday. After an evening of guessing just who the judges would choose, the decision was announced at twelve o'clock and the 1940 Queen Alma Jane Lindgren crowned Patty the ruler for 1941. The two princesses selected were Helen Hines and Mary Maroon. It was a night for pleasant surprises, for in the middle of the evening came the news that Marion Brown had married Bunny Lovett that very same day. Alvalyn Boege, in a blue chiffon dress, spent her time dancing with R. A. F. officer Tom Luckmann. Bobbie Crimm, escorted by Ed Patton, looked very demure with her upswept hair-do held in place with three dubonet flowers. Tennis Courts For Students It won't be long now until the students at the U will be able to play tennis on their own courts. It seems as if Gardner Mulloy's dream of a tennis stadium is coming true almost overnight. One day the posts go in the ground, and the next the men are rolling the clay on. Well, I guess it just goes to show you what determination will do. All the frat girls forgot their dignity recently to do some strenuous bowling in the Intramural Tournament, Chi Omega's team, composed of Jane Johnson, Frances Heether, and Helen Meekins carried off the victory title. Returning Students Of special interest to Gableites are these returning "freshmen" at Tallahassee, who arrived last week. Concluding their very first semester hey include: Margie Loomis, Susanne Bonner, Frances Vandiver, Frances McGarry, Ethel Dim-mer and Alice Kamerer. From across the way at Gainesville will come Bill Starmann, Bob Goeser, Ed Kirkland, Fritz Myers, Mickey Mixson, Ed Jenkins and Stuart Northrop. Coral Gables' mild weather will probably be heaven to those boys who are back from the cold of northern states. Latham Collins arrived from Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Collins Hay from Brown University, and Peter Herendeen from Cornell. Six other students who will this week be back home in the Gables are Billie Thompson, Barbara Jane Mayhew, Rosemary Hubbell, Ken McCormick, Sherry Sherwood and Bill Thue. Wonder if those Georgia students will greet their old friends with a "How're yawl!?" Edith Snideman, Jeanne Susong, Barbara Granfield, Eleanor Fuller, and Betty and Caroline Lewis will be down from Wesleyan College, while Mary Carter started from La Grange College, and Helene Zimmerman arrived last week from Brenau. From Emory come Jimmie Mendel and Martin Avery! From Georgia Tech, Ogden Houstoun; and from North Georgia College, Leo Upshaw. Ann Park, Janie Skagseth and Donna Wilson will have the latest news from Virginia Intermont. Yes, indeed, it will be a wonderful holiday, and the best part of it all will be the reunion of these students who have been separated for four long months.
Hansen and Mr. and Mrs. W. Scott Deming. With Mr. and Mrs. Charles I. Smith will be Mr. and Mrs. Thomas F. Smith, Mr. and Mrs. Herbert Brown, Mr. Henry S. Lamp, Mrs. Elizabeth Gardner and Capt. Jean Griner. Dr. and Mrs. R. A. Williams will be hosts to Mr. and Mrs. James Donna, Dr. and Mrs. Thomas W. Jones, Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth S. Keyes, Dr. and Mrs. John M. Murrell. Mr. and Mrs. W. E. Nicholson will have at their table, Mr. and Mrs. Charles G. Brand, Mr. and Mrs. William H. Walker, Jr., Mr. and Mrs. Phil J. Lawrence and Major and Mrs. S. T. Layton. Mr. and Mrs. Charles T. Fuchs will be hosts at a table of ten, also Mr. and Mrs. Leonard A. Usina, Mr. and Mrs. William T. Mixson, Dr. and Mrs. George C. Williams, Mr. and Mrs. S. Duffield Hopkins, Jr., Mr. and Mrs. Marvin B. Adams, Mr. and Mrs. Inman Padgett, Mr. and Mrs. Charles A Morehead, Dr. and Mrs. John D. Collins and Mr. and Mrs. John W. Moon who will entertain together at one of the larger tables of twenty guests.
Mrs. Hibben Honor Guest At Monday Party
Violet sweetpeas and yellow snapdragons were combined for a pretty springtime note decoration in the large luncheon Mrs. Archibald Mackrell gave Monday at the Miami Biltmore Hotel. Tables were placed in T shape in the main dinning room and places were marked for 36 guests. Mrs. John Severy Hibben, guest of honor, who recently arrived from Pasadena, Cal., wore smart black with gold jewelry. Mrs. Otto Escholtz and Mrs. W. S. Wagner, house guests in the Mackrell's and Mr. and Mrs. A. W. Barrett's home also honor guests as well as Miss Amy Dougall, aunt of Mrs. John Montgomery, daughter-in-law of Mrs. Barrett. Mrs. Hibben found ready listeners to the story of her trip by train from California. When the train pulled into the Pasadena station, Mrs. Hibben exclaimed to Dr. Hibben, who followed her a week later by plane, "What in the world is the matter with this train, not a light, it's all black." And that is the way they traveled across the states, each passenger equipped with a flashlight. Twenty six troop cars were also attached to their train.
Houseparty
Mr. and Mrs. Ben Schmidt, of 2417 South Greenway Drive, are having a houseparty over Christmas with the arrival Monday of their son and daughter-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Schmidt of Covington, Ky. They were accompanied by their children, Jane, nine; Benny, seven and Ann Gayle, five, who have often visited in the Gables. This year, they requested Grand-mother Schmidt to have a piano for them so they could play for her and Grandfather Schmidt. Mrs. Schmidt complied with their request and a small piano was ready to greet them on arrival.
GIRL SCOUTS
Last week troop 13 met at Colonade Studios where we practiced for our Court of Awards. We are thinking very seriously of meeting here every Friday night. Last Saturday evening we had our Court Awards and Christmas party. Troop 59 also had their Court of Awards. We had to do stunts for our gifts and we really had a good time. We have had a very busy but happy Christmas week. Troop 13 wishes all of you a MERRY CHRISTMAS. Lulu Sherman—Scribe

Leave For Kansas
Mr. and Mrs. Harry Montgomery, who have spent many past seasons in Coral Gables, left the day after war was declared, for their home in Junction City, Kans., after several weeks stay at the Pancoast Hotel, Miami Beach. Mr. and Mrs. Montgomery originally planned to stay until some time in January then return late in the season for another visit with their son and daughter-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. John D. Montgomery of Di Lido Island.
If a seaman in the U. S. Navy is eligible to take the entrance examination for the United States Naval Academy at Annapolis, is he given any special preparatory training? Yes. There is a Naval Academy Preparatory School at Norfolk, Va., that trains eligible enlisted men for entrance examinations to Annapolis.
