-:- First Mid-Term University Of Miami Commencement To Be Formal Affair -:-
Weekend Dotted With Tea Dances, Dinners, Parties This week end, the Miami Biltmore Hotel will be the scene of the social events of the first formal mid-term commencement of the University of Miami. With the university extending its courses more and more into the summer it is expected this group will grow. The deans and their wives will be the hosts at breakfast at 9:30 a.m. Saturday in the hotel. B. F. Ashe, president of the student body will preside. Oliver Hoover, president of the alumni group, and Mrs. Hoover and Gardner Mulloy, secretary of the college alumni will attend. Dean John Thom Holdsworth and Dean Henry West will be the speakers. In the afternoon from 3 until 5 o'clock, Dr. and Mrs. Bowman F. Ashe and the faculty members will be hosts at a tea dance honoring the graduates. The alumni and candidates for the June commencement are invited to this affair. Reservations, however, should be made with Marjorie Christiansen at the University. The baccalaureate services will take place Sunday morning at the Congregational Church. The round of activities in honor of the graduates will reach their culmination with the commencement exercises at 8 p.m. Monday at the club. The University of Miami Symphonic band will play, and the presiding officer at the exercises will be William C. Coffin, chairman of the University board of trustees. At 1:30 p.m. in the hotel dining room a luncheon will take place, at which, the trustees will honor the recipients of honorary degrees. It is expected that many of the University of Miami alumni, now in town, who will not be here for the June commencement will attend Monday's exercises.

Miss Beverly Lack will preside at the coffee service at a table entirely appointed in bridal white. About 20 close friends of the bride-to-be, including her attendants, will be present ... Mrs. L. W. Dowlen, the former Miss Marie Smith, and herself a recent bride, will have a Valentine tea on the fourteenth; Mrs. Gordon Walters will also have a tea on the 17th; Mrs. George Corrigan will have a bridge luncheon and shower on the 20th at her home, 2505 Columbus Boulevard; and a dessert bridge, at which Mrs. W. G. Sanchez and her daughter Mrs. F. Conway Hamilton will entertain on the 21st, will be at Mrs. Hamilton's new home on Avenue Milan. Miss Diestelhorst has named Miss Lack as maid-of-honor; Miss Dorothy Ashe, bridesmaid; and Mrs. Cloney, Mrs. Dowlen and Mrs. John Fuher of St. Louis, bridal-aides. Dr. Coleman's best man will be Dr. Jack Beckwith and ushers will be Dr. Dowlen, William Gaither, Robert McGahey, L. A. Coleman, a brother of the groom-to-be and Fred Diestelhorst, brother of the bride-to-be. The wedding will take place at 4 p.m. in the Congregational Church. Mrs. Malcolm Scott and Mrs. Fernal Bobeer of Berwyn, Ill., will arrive tomorrow for a stay of several weeks with Mrs. Scott's parents, Mr. and Mrs. G. C. Angerman of 1020 Alhambra Circle. Mr. Bobeer is a noted golfer, having played in many Biltmore tournaments ... Mr. and Mrs. J. S. Preim arrived this week to open their home for the winter on Avenue Santa Maria. The Green Candle Tea Room was the scene Tuesday of three tables of bridge composed of a group of Coral Gables women who have been meeting together for many years. Those playing were, Mrs. Evan D. Roser, Mrs. George Berry, Mrs. Edward P. Sanjchein, Mrs. Harry Rath, Mrs. Jack Erneman, Mrs. Frank Holley, Jr., Mrs. George Cobb, Mrs. Fred Hartnett, Mrs. O. K. Houston, Mrs. Leo E. Mudd and Mrs. Owens. Mr. and Mrs. Edward W. Griffin are at home in their new home, 800 Avenue Palermo following their marriage, January eighth at the First Christian Church, Miami. Mrs. Griffin's son, Fred Biebel, who played and gifted bass horn in the University of Miami School of Music, sang "At Dawning" at the quiet evening wedding uniting the pair. Mrs. A. L. Jeter of Lynchburg, Va., Mr. Griffin's daughter and Mr. Biebel were the attendants. The bride is the former Mrs. Fred J. Biebel of Bellview (suburb of Pittsburg) and Louisville, Ky., and has been a winter visitor for many years. Another son, Ensley L. Biebel is a student at Duke University. Mr. Griffin is from Louisville, and Lynchburg. For the past 12 years he has been manager of the Thomson and McKinnon brokerage company; is a past president of the Miami Country Club. A round of parties preceded the departure Monday, and subsequent marriage Wednesday in Birmingham, Ala., of Miss Emily Owens Robinson and W. A. Wheary of both of Richmond, Va., formerly of Coral Gables. Mrs. Wheary, Jr., is the niece of and made her home while living here with Mr. and Mrs. Wendell Sumner, who entertained for her with a cocktail party Sunday afternoon at their home, 627 Avenue Minorca. Mr. and Mrs. William H. Merriam gave a shower for the bride on Thursday and Dr. and Mrs. Wiley Sams entertained 12 guests at dinner on Saturday night at their home. About 30 close friends of the bride were at the Sumner party on Sunday, Mrs. Dayton Fertig and Mrs. Merriam assisted the hosts. Mrs. Wheary, Jr., is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. E. Valvin Robinson of Richmond and has resided in Coral Gables for two years. Mr. Wheary, Jr., is the son of Mr. and Mrs. W. A. Wheary of Richmond and has recently been transferred to Birmingham by the Sears Company, for whom, he is a buyer. Orchids to Barbara Parmley of the Theatre of the Fisteen, who has added another role to her many talents, that of being the "voice" of Lois Lane in the new series of superman pictures being made at the Fleisher Studios in Miami ... On opening night (Wednesday) of "The Man Who Came To Dinner" the theatre was reserved by members of Kappa Kappa Gamma alumnae club. Woman's City Club of Miami and the Coral Gables Junior Woman's Club also are reserving groups of seats for this play this week. "Blackout" dances, "statue" dances and Promenades featured the dancing party David Batcheller, Charles and Bradford White gave Friday night at the Batcheller's country home on Sunset Road. Sub-debs and young bachelors made up the party. The Misses Jean Mixson, Delphine Shaver, Eleanor Wardlow, Barbara Myers, Nancy Hinckley, Patsy Nichol, Betty Merriam, Betty Mitchel, Mary Rule, Ruth Sullivan, Margie Race, Jean Henderson, Nancy Jones, Mary Lou Wilkins; Jimmy Loomis, John Dale, Walter Denison, Jack Broadfoot, Frank White, 3rd., Judge Welch, Royce Powell and Richard Cassidy were guests.
Elementary P.-T. A. Will Meet Tuesday Afternoon
Mrs. Byrnes English will be the guest speaker Tuesday at the regular monthly meeting of the Coral Gables Elementary P.T.A. Mrs. English, a refugee from Leileilua, Hawaii and the daughter-in-law of Dr. and Mrs. Robert English of Coral Gables, will give the highlights of her experience during the raids on Pearl Harbor. Mrs. English will also answer questions concerning the island. The meeting at 3:15 p.m. in the auditorium will be preceded by a board meeting at 1:30 p.m. in the P.-T.A. room. Mrs. Leslie Maxwell, program chairman will also present Mrs. C. T. McCreedy, well known Coral Gables soprano, in a group of songs. Tea following the program, will be served in the patio with Mrs. D. R. Smith, hospitality chairman and her committee in charge.
Former Resident
Ensign Frank Fitch, stationed at Jacksonville, was in Coral Gables this week on a five day leave. Ensign Fitch formerly lived in the Gables, and his many friends welcomed him back for his short visit.
SERMON-TOPIC ANNOUNCED
"The Gift Of Peace" is the subject of the sermon to be delivered by the Rev. Carroll Hawk, at the 11 o'clock service Sunday at the Coral Gables Methodist Church.

Guests at the Antilla Hotel include Mr. and Mrs. Lewis Robret Brink of Park Ridge, Ill., who are visiting their son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Ray Brown. Mrs. Brink will remain for the season.
KING'S DAUGHTERS TO SPONSOR BENEFIT
Greater Miami Chapter, International Order of King's Daughters and Sons will sponsor a bridge and games party at 7:30 p.m. February sixth. The party will be held at the Pepsi-Cola Company building, 1251 N. W. 36th Street, Miami. Prizes and refreshments will be features. The public is invited.
Little Flower Society Will Have Annual Bazaar Next Week
The annual bazaar of the Little Flower Society of the Church of the Little Flower will take place Feb. 5, 6 and 7 in the church auditorium. As in years past, booths of all kinds will be erected and there will be handsome door prizes which have been donated, awarded. Mrs. Boyd Taylor, president of the society, will be general chairman of the bazaar. She will be assisted by members of the society and members of the St. Vincent de Paul's society of which R. E. Roberts, Jr., is president. Among those assisting are Mrs. David Heffernan, Mrs. C. C. La Pointe, Mrs. Richard Donovan, Mrs. C. H. Trotter, Mrs. Percy Gillmore, Mrs. George Cummings, Mrs. C. H. Veeder, Mrs. Richard McEnany, Mrs. Frank Coakley, Mrs. L. A. Stephans, Mrs. J. T. Long and many others.
Mrs. Harry Beyer Wins Weekly Tournament Play at Country Club
Seven tables of bridge were in play Tuesday at the Country Club of Coral Gables' regular weekly winter tournament play with Mrs. Harry J. Beyer, Jr., winner of the high score. Mrs. Keith Schader was second in command of scores and Mrs. Erics Fashard Noble, third. Mrs. Arthur Higgins had two out of town guests, Mrs. Howard Ballard of Marshall, Mich., and Mrs. Winfred Martin, wife of Dr. Martin, of Detroit. Also formerly of Coral Gables, now of Key West, Miss Eva Daniels, of Grand Rapids, niece of Mrs. roll Daniels, and the Daniels' house guest was also guest of Mrs. Daniels at the party. Baccalaureate Sermon Will Be Sunday
The University of Miami baccalaureate sermon will be held in the Coral Gables Congregational Church on Sunday with Dr. E. L. Phillips officiating at 11 A. M. Rev. Carl Stackman, pastor of the church, will bring the message of the morning on the subject "Houses on the Sand." The special music for the service includes "Larghetto" (Bach-Franko) and "Air" (Pergolese) by a string quartet composed of Herbert Levinson, Alice Masasell, Charlotte Hager and Marjorie Kemp and conducted by Alan Collins; the processional hymn will be accompanied by Edward Sassman on the trumpet. The church choir will sing "The Voice of Praise" (Mozart) and the soprano solo by Mrs. C. T. McCreedy will be 'God in Everything' (Joseph E. Clokey).
Mr. Bonwit Home
Walter Bonwit, who has been a patient at St. Francis Hospital for several weeks is much improved in health and is at his home in the Fashoda Apartments, 111 Alhambra Circle. Mr. Bonwit formerly lived in the Mirasol.
Ponce P.-T. A. Will Meet Wednesday
Founder's Day at Ponce de Leon high school will be celebrated by the Parent-teacher association with a birthday party Wednesday at 3:15 p.m. in the Little Theatre of the school. This is the 28th anniversary of the founding of the school. Mrs. O. H. Charles will be the guest speaker and will speak of the work of her husband, who was superintendant of public instruction in the Phillipines for many years. Mrs. Wade Livingston Street, regent of the Coral Gables Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution, will present the good citizenship cup, a gift from her chapter, the cup to be permanent in the school, and each inscribed each year with the winner of the good citizenship award. The Ponce Quartet will provide music. Mrs. Shirley Keck, chairman of hospitality and her committee will serve the special birthday cake at tea following the program.
LESSON-SERMON ANNOUNCED
First Church of Christ, Scientist "Love" is the subject of the lesson-sermon which will be read in Churches of Christ, Scientist, throughout the world on Sunday, February 1. The golden text is: "We have known and believed the love that God hath to us. God is love; and he that dwelleth in love dwelleth in God and God in him" (I John 4:16). Among the citations which comprise the Lesson-Sermon is the following from the Bible: "Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, that He may exalt you in due time: Casting all your care upon Him; for He careth for you" (I Pet. 5:6, 7).

Dr. Eckel To Talk To Club Women
Dr. Paul Eckel, assistant professor in the history department of the University of Miami will be the guest speaker Monday afternoon at the Coral Gables Woman's Club. The meeting at 2:30 will be preceded by an executive board meeting called by the president Mrs. Charles J. Susong. Mrs. O. P. Rogers, chairman of the International Relations Group will present Dr. Eckel, whose talk is entitled, "Trends in Japan that led to War". Dr. Eckel, who received his doctor of philosophy degree from the University of Southern California last year, spent six previous years in Japan attending two universities there. Mrs. Clyde Higgins, musical chairman, will present a program. Mrs. E. H. Padgett and Mrs. L. E. Huguelet chairmen of hospitality will preside during the tea hour.
Divide Church School Into Two Groups
The church school of the Coral Gables Congregational Church, which meets from 10 to 12 A.M. Sundays, will be divided into two groups this Sunday. Mrs. Lobelle M. Hodgman and Lorin E. Coppock, teachers in Miami Senior High School, will be in charge of the senior school, which will meet in the church. Mrs. Vida S. Githens will be in charge of the junior group, which will continue to meet in the lounge. The junior and senior high school departments and the adult group will comprise the senior school and those under the junior high school age will comprise the junior school.
KING'S DAUGHTERS TO MEET WEDNESDAY
The Greater Miami Chapter, International Order of King's Daughters and Sons will meet at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the home of Mrs. T. C. Latimer, 520 Majorca. Heavyweight Tommy Gomez of Tampa, now a soldie rat Camp Blanding, has lost only one fight in thirty-six.
King Arthur Chapter To Meet
King Arthur Chapter, Daughters of the British Empire, will meet at 2:30 P. M. Tuesday at the home of Mr. and Mrs. George Fawcett, 2616 Granada Boulevard. Mrs. Shirley Layton will be co-hostess with Mrs. Fawcett in entertaining the group. Mrs. George Moore is regent.
