Tribune Wins Top Honors In NSPA, CSPA Contests
Again this year, as for the past five consecutive years, the Ponce Tribune has been awarded the National Scholastic Press Association All-American Honor Rating, highest distinction besides the Peacemaker award that this organization gives. For the third consecutive time the Tribune received medalist award from the Columbia Scholastic Press Association, also the highest recognition. In addition to top honors for the paper in general, the sports page won all-Columbian honors, special notice bestowed only on outstanding papers. Word has also just been received that the Tribune won the distinguished newspaper rating awarded by Emory University, another top award. In the N. S. P. A. contest, the Tribune scored 1,105 out of a possible 1,195 points. In the C. S. P. A. contest, the paper obtained 910 out of 1,000, and in the Emory contest 825 of 950 points. Staff Members Staff members responsible for maintaining and furthering the national reputation of the Tribune include Roger Carlson, editor-in-chief; Margery Clark, news editor; Jean Troetschel, feature editor; Betty Ellis, associate feature editor; Jack Hoehl, sports editor; Barbara Wilkins, girls' sports editor; Ben Fess and Alan Hutton, art editors; Peggy Carter, ad copy and feature writer, and staff writers, Lareeta Cater, Ann Cone, Elaine Yurkshat, Margaret Brown, Kay Tyler and Peggy Sargent. Credit for the financial side of the paper goes to Bill Pierce, business manager; Mary Jane Westerdahl, advertising manager, and the members of the first year journalism class.
Douglas To Face Foes From Home State
Last fall Bob Douglas of Beckley, W. Va., was one of the stars for the University of Miami when the Hurricanes licked the West Virginia Wesleyan football team 34-0. This year Bob will get a chance to play against another eleven from his home state, as Miami has booked West Virginia University for a game in the Orange Bowl.
