Hackett Named by VFW Post Other Officers Selected in Recent Balloting
Wallace E. Hackett, retired army officer and resident of Coral Gables for nearly two years, has been elected Commander of the Ray Rehuart Post 5718, Veterans of Foreign Wars. Colonel Hackett saw 27 years continuous service in the army, and served overseas in World Wars I and II. The Post was organized a year ago and has a membership of 200. Two members served in Cuba during the Spanish American War. Many served in World War I, but the majority served in World War II. The major problem of the Post of the coming year is that of adequate housing facilities for veterans in Coral Gables. Another objective is to construct a club house, and a campaign of last August netted a large sum of money for this. Other future plans of the post include an "eye bank" located in an area where sight restoration may be had by veterans ando thers who have defective cornea. The major effort of the post will be to increase its membership to 600. New officers of the coming year are: Senior Vice-Commander, A. T. Griswold; Junior Vice-Commander, W. L. Lewis; Quartermaster, Morton Engle; Post Chaplain, Rev. Otto Hampton; Post Advocate, Frank O. Spain; Post Surgeon, Dr. T. D. Sanberg; Trustees, William T. McIlwain, Carl T. Wallace, George W. Harrell.
College Groups Aiding in Blood Drive
Working in conjunction with Coral Gables civic organizations, the Junior Chamber of Commerce is sponsoring the Blood Bank drive at the University of Miami, according to Dr. Robert A. McVoy, general chairman. Included on the committee are Lloyd Reese, Si Sobeck, John Lipscomb, Jack Widder-shein, John Galbreth and Dave Hendrick. The committee is organizing the fraternities, sororities, and other University organizations for the drive which will run for another 6 or 7 weeks. There has been a prize of a radio and a trophy offered to the two groups which will contribute the most blood. The mark set for the entire Coral Gables is 1,000 pints of blood. The committee in charge of the drive in the Coral Gables area is headed by Dr. McVoy, who has made a schedule of two organizations a week which will contribute to the cause. On the 25th of March, the Kiwanis Club and the DAR had their drive. On April 2, the Woman's Club and Junior Woman's Club will hold their drive at their clubhouse. The Sororities and fraternities at the University will be put on a schedule as are the Coral Gables groups. To date, only the Alpha Kappa Psi fraternity has given any blood. They contributed 22 pints on the day they were scheduled to hold their drive. The American Legion Post and the American Legion Auxilliary have been holding their drives throughout the past few months, and will continue to be a contributing organization. On the committee for Coral Gables are Mrs. A. E. White, Mrs. William Cox, Mrs. Ann Nicholson and Judge O. B. Sutton. Dr. McVoy is in charge of both the Junior Chamber of Commerce committee and the Coral Gables committee.

New Damon Runyon Post Plans Many Activities
Starting off with a bang is the American Legion Damon Runyon Post No. 253 at the University of Miami. Several programs are already under way and many new ones are being planned. Latest idea of the group is the 20th Street housing project, and the South Campus at Richmond. These began last week when "It Happened Tomorrow" was shown Wednesday night at 20th Street and the following night at Richmond, and will be a weekly affair. Admission is 25 cents and everyone is invited to attend the showings which begin at & 7:30 p.m. The organization has been assigned Room 813 at the Main Campus, and has turned it into a study room for all students. Fifty cents out of each five-dollar membership is given to the Damon Runyon Cancer Fund. Members of the post also contribute to the Dade County Blood Bank. Every Tuesday night the group sponsors a radio program over station WBAY at 8:45 p.m. called "Decision Now". This is a transcribed program for the youth of America. Organized Feb. 7, the post holds meetings the first and third Thursday of every month at the Coral Gables Legion Home, 303 Alhambra Circle. Membership is open to any veteran, male or female. "There are 20 posts in the 10th district, and we are the only one allowing women," according to Bob Short, one of the organizers and the present adjutant.

Deluge of Balloons Is Planned As Promotion Stunt
Kiddies — and adults, too — keep your eye on the sky Saturday, at 1:30 p.m. for those luck balloons which the Gables and Coral theatres will release from a high point in town. Seems that the theatres are running a Spring Festival of Hits, and are releasing the balloons —each balloon good for a free kiddie admission to any Paramount theatre in town—as a feature of the festival. Besides being good for the kiddie ducat, some of the balloons will contain a pass good for use by an adult.
