Plymouth Church Celebrates 50th Anniversary

Above Congregation Plans Special Commemorative Services and Programs

The Plymouth Congregational Church of Coconut Grove, one of the oldest houses of worship in South Florida, will celebrate the 50th anniversary of its founding Sunday at a special morning anniversary service. The church was established on November 12, 1897. The Rev. Dr. William N. Tuttle, superintendent of the Florida Congregational Christian Conference, will bring greetings from the other churches of the state at the commemorative service at 11 o'clock. The Rev. David J. Davis, pastor, will preach on "The Church Has the Answer." Two anthems, "How Manifold Thy Works" and "The Heavens Resound" will be sung by the senior choir under the direction of Kathleen Norris, organist-director. Charles V. Kennedy, chairman of the Anniversary Committee, will speak briefly and will serve as master or ceremonies at the golden anniversary party to be held in Plymouth Hall Sunday evening. Mrs. J. D. Overstreet will read "A Brief History of Plymouth Church" which she has compiled from all available church records. This will be followed by dramatizations of early incidents in the history of the church by a cast directed by Mrs. F. A. Kent.

Country Club C. E. Dinner Host to City Conference

"The Singing Heart" is the message of the eleven o'clock morning worship service at the Country Club Christian Church, 1050 E. Ponce de Leon Blvd. (worshiping in the Women's Club Building adjoining the Public Library), Coral Gables, by the Pastor, the Rev. Harry John Fritsch. Charlotte Hicks, prominent young Miamian, will be soloist. Holy Communion will be observed. The Bible School meets at 10 a.m. with classes for all ages. Mr. William Delo teaches the Adult Class. The Christian Endeavor Society will be host to the City-wide Conference Club Sunday at 1:30 a.m. at which time a dinner will be served, followed by an afternoon of good fellowship. Arrangements are in charge of Miss Dorothy Nieger. Miss Jeannine Godwin will present the Devotional Program, and the Rev. Harvey John Fritsch will be the speaker.

Presbyterians Take Part In Leadership School

The Gables Presbyterian Church is co-operating with other Presbyterian churches in Greater Miami in the Leadership Training School being conducted at the North East Church Nov. 9th through 13th. There will be five sessions of two hours each, starting on Sunday at 2:30 pm. The weekday classes, Monday through Thursday, will be held at 7:30 p.m. In announcing the school, Dr. B. M. Larson stated that group transportation would be provided for those attending from the Gables Presbyterian congregation. The subject "An Estimate of Life and Death" will be taken by Dr. Larson at the 11 a.m. worship service Sunday. Nursery instruction is available for children of pre-school age while their parents attend the service.

Methodists Name New Director Of Education

The First Methodist Church of Coral Gables today announced appointment of A. Glenn Waters to the post of Director of Religious Education for the Church. Waters succeeds Miss Eulalie Ginn, who resigned from the post to devote full tme to her position as Director of the Wesley Foundation at the University of Miami, a program among Methodist students there. The newcomer, who flew to Coral Gables this week from Tampa to take over his new work, will give his full time to the religious education program of the Gables church. During the past year, Waters served as Educational Director of the Government Street Methodist Church of Mobile, Ala. While there he developed an outstanding program of audio-visual aids and promoted a wide training program for teachers and workers in the church school. He is a graduate of Millsaps College, Jackson, Miss., and has done graduate study at Southern Methodist University and Emory College. He has done professional work with the Boy Scouts of America and the Y. M. C. A. and for several Summers he served as associate director of Camp Adventure at Lake Junaluska, N. C.

SOUTH MIAMI METHODISTS LAUNCH FUND CAMPAIGN

South Miami Methodists will inaugurate a financial campaign to raise $14,500 with a "Forward Step" banquet Nov. 20th at the South Miami School. The Rev. Laurie Ray of Lake Wales and the Rev. Carroll Varner, pastor of the First Methodist Church of South Miami, will lead the drive. Funds will be used to build a Fellowship Hall and Chapel. Clayton Acker is chairman of the executive committee together with the pastor and Mrs. Harley Vanderboegh, secretary and treasurer. Two divisions have been organized with Talbert Shuman and Professor Fred Koch, Jr., named as majors. Major Shuman's captains include J. F. Mapes, Harley Vanderboegh, Mrs. R. B. Zinker, E. L. Cotten and Braden Hayes. Major Koch's captains are B. S. Chinn, Hobart Miller, Omar Stang, Mrs. C. E. Snyder and Dr. Raymond Van Dusen. (Additional Church News Page 3)

First Christian

The Rev. John W. Messer, minister of the First Christian Church, 222 Menores Ave., will speak Sunday morning on "Where the Kingdom Begins." The choir will sing "Send Out Thy Light" at the service starting at 10:45. A nursery is maintained for infants and small children. The church school at 9:30 a.m. offers graded lessons for all ages. Intermediate Youth Fellowship members will meet at five o'clock for recreation, program and fellowship. This group includes those from eleven to fourteen. The Christian Youth Fellowship meets at six o'clock for a program of worship and study. Miss Aileen Stiffler, contralto soloist for the church will conduct the worship, while Mr. Rayford Hymes, superintendent of the church school, will be the guest speaker. Following the program, refreshments will be served. The Sunday evening service will begin at eight o'clock and will offer a fine song service with special music. The sermon topic will be of "The Dilemmas of Jesus" Mr. Messer will speak on "The Dilemma of Allegiance." The public is cordially invited to these services.

Armistice Day Service

The Rev. Dr. J. H. Daniel, pastor of the Coral Gables First Methodist Church, has chosen as his Armistic Day sermon at the 11 a.m. service Sunday, "The Religion of Friendship." The choir will sing as its processional "The Kingdom of God" with a trumpet solo by David Houser. The prelude will be "To An American Soldier" by Thompson, and the Offertory, "Song Without Words." The Postlude, "Victory," will conclude the organ numbers. The choir will sing for the anthem, "Song of Peace" by Sibelius, and Tom Winston, bass, will sing "Recessional" by DeKoven. The Intermediate group of the Young People's group will meet at 5 p.m. with Faye Edwards, leader. Topic, "Recreation, Right and Wrong." Second in Series Continuing their series of November Sunday night services under the auspices of the Woman's Society of Christian Service, the Young People's Methodist Youth Fellowship will conduct the evening service at 7:45 with William Furr leader. Dr. Franklin Williams, professor of history and Dean of the College of Liberal Arts at the University of Miami, will be the guest speaker. His subject, "Reason for Hope in the United Nations." Cecelia Deunas, Columbia voice student at the University of Miami, will be the soloist.

Services Set for U. Baptist Church

Services at the University Baptist Church this Sunday are: Bible School, 9:45 a.m., with a class for people of all ages; Morning Worship Service, 11:00 a.m.; Baptist Training Union, 6:45 p.m., which operates in four departments: Story Hour, ages 9 through 12; Intermediate Union, ages 13 through 16; Young People's Union, ages 17 through 24; Adult Union, ages 25 and above; and Evening Worship Service, 7:45 p.m. Mid-week Prayer Meeting is at 8:00 p.m. each Wednesday. Sunday the message at both the Morning Worship Service and the Evening Worship Service will be brought by the pastor, Dr. Ladislau Biro.

Missionary Guest At Church Here

The Rev. G. Raymond Womeldorf, for 19 years a missionary to China, will speak at Riviera Presbyterian Church Sunday morning. His subject will be "The Christian's Responsibility to the World." He will also address the Church School, which opens at 9:45 a.m. Mr. Womeldorf is a representative of Atlanta headquarters in the Presbyterian Program of Progress, a plan for advance in Christian service, at home and abroad. The Youth Fellowship will be in charge of the evening service at seven-thirty, presenting a program observing Synod's Youth Program. Edward G. Staub is adult advisor of the group. The hour of the evening service has been changed to 7:30 beginning Sunday. Announcement has been made that an intermediate group of young people, to be called Pioneers, will be formed within the next ten days. Details will be given next week.

St. James Sets Ingathering

Divine worship will be held at the St. James Lutheran Church of Coral Gables at 11:00 a.m. Sunday. The members of the Women's Missionary Society will conduct an Ingathering of Thanksgiving Boxes at this service and dedicate their gifts to the service of Christ. Rev. C. J. Sutorius, the Pastor, will preach on the subject "The True Value of Christianity". The Sunday school meets at 10:00 a.m., providing classes for all age groups. The Bible Study Group will meet at the church Tuesday evening at 8:00 p.m. Subject of the discussion will be "The Last Things." The Confirmation Class for the Youth will meet at the church Friday at 4:00 p.m.

S. Miami Baptist

Sunday services in the South Miami Baptist Church begin with Church school at 9:45 a.m. The 11 a.m. service will be broadcast over WBAY with the Rev. Frank C. Morgan speaking on "Open My Eyes." Training Union for all ages will meet in the church at 6:30 p.m. followed by the sermon "A Modern Felix" at 7:30 p.m. The Rev. Mr. Morgan, following the service, will administer the ordinance of Baptism. Addresses Fellowship Over against the Communist Party repudiation of Religion, Katherine Skogstad will tell of the placing of 500,000 Bibles and 43,300 New Testament and Psalms translated into the Russian language, and printed by the American Bible Society, when she leads the Westminster Fellowship program of First Presbyterian Church of Coral Gables Sunday in the Church Parish House. This part of a program on the church's worldwide mission, in Asia and orphaned, missions everywhere will be given at the seven o'clock meeting. A fellowship hour at the home of Miss Joanne Crowder will follow.

Bryan Memorial

At the Bryan Memorial Methodist Church, Coconut Grove, the pastor, the Rev. Mr. Albert Dale Hagler will speak on the subject at 11 a.m. "On Being Made Whole" in observance of World Peace Sunday. preach and a special offering will be received to complete the two million dollar Restoration Fund pledged by the Presbyterian Churches of the United States of America to restore the work of the churches in war-devastated communities.

Grove Baptist

Sermon theme for the Coconut Grove Baptist Church Sunday will be "A Solution to this Time of Tension" to be delivered by the pastor, the Rev. George McNeill Ray at the 11 a.m. service. The Baptist Training Union will meet at 6 and 7 p.m. and Sunday school will convene at 9:45 a.m. The evening service at 7:30 p.m. will find the pastor preaching "The Greatest Power in the World". Wednesday evening family hour is conducted at 7:30 p.m.

Christian Science

First Church of Christ, Scientist in Coral Gables is opposite City Hall Park. Morning service 11 a.m. Evening service, 8 p.m. Sunday school, 11 a.m. Wednesday evening 8 o'clock. "ADAM AND FALLEN MAN" is the subject of the Lesson-Sermon which will be read in Churches of Christ, Scientist, throughout the world on Sunday, November 9. The Golden Text is: "Ye were sometimes darkness, but now are ye light in the Lord; walk as children of light" (Ephesians 5:8). Among the citations which comprise the Lesson-Sermon is the following from the Bible: "So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them. . . . And God saw every thing that he had made, and, behold, it was very good" (Genesis 1:27,31 (to first period) ).
