Piano Needed For Radio Show By Youth Center
Youth Center President Harry Morgenthaler today offered a unique way for some piano-owning Gables resident to contribute to the city-wide youth center fund-raising campaign without spending a nickel. "Just lend us the piano," said Morgenthaler. The Center, for its regular 1 o'clock radio show on Saturday, has to transport its own piano over to the Coral Theater and back each week. That costs $20 a week, not to mention wear and tear on the much-mauled piano. The show has nine weeks more to run on its current schedule, Morgenthaler said, and the resident whose piano is used to accompany WBAY artists and Youth Center members on their Saturday air-wavings will be credited with a $180 contribution. The air show is sponsored jointly by station WBAY and the Riviera-Times and prizes for the quiz show portion of the program are contributed by Gables merchants. Among those donating prizes to the program are the Miracle Juvenile Shop, Gaby, Great Southern Stores, Leslie H. Coombes, Jessie's Salon of Beauty, Ponce de Leon Hardware, Avenue Appliance, J. E. Shaw, Rogers Electric Co., The Bootery, Kenyon's Auto Store, Elaine's and Eastern Radio.
URANIUM SOURCE SOUGHT IN DEPTHS OF OCEAN BED
By DAN L. THRAPP UP Staff Correspondent LONDON (UP) — The world's largest untapped store of uranium and radium is being measured by a Swedish deep-sea expedition led by Prof. Hans Pettersson, of Goteborg. The expedition, aboard the 1,400-ton motor schooner Albatross, has studied the deep ocean and its bed during a voyage across the Atlantic and Caribbean and recently entered the Pacific through the Panama Canal. Many lines of research are being pursued by the expedition's scientists, Prof. Pettersson wrote in the British scientific magazine Nature. The measurement of uranium and radium, made by analyzing large volumes of sea water taken from different depths, were not directed at discovering a method for retrieving the elements. Radium Found "Such measurements have become of especial importance because of the light they may shed on the ionium precipitation in the sea," Prof. Pettersson wrote. He said such precipitation is supposed to be responsible for the radium found in deep sea deposits. Echo-sounding charts of the sea bottom have been taken to a depth of 21,680 feet, it was reported. They showed that the floor of the Caribbean was much smoother than that of the Atlantic. Many submarine cliffs, previously unknown, were found. The depth curve moves incessantly up and down, Pettersson reported. He said the cliffs suggested "faults," or places where the rock had buckled because of lateral pressure. The uneven surface of the bottom of the ocean made the work of measuring the sediment thickness at great depths complicated, he said. An ingenious method of sounding the sediment carpet was developed by Prof. W. Weibull of Bofors, who accompanied the expedition. Depth charges were set off that echoes reflected both from the sediment surface and the hard rock beneath the sediment were recorded. Carpet Uneven By that method it was found that the sediment carpet—the accumulation of ages—beneath the Atlantic Ocean is 5,700 feet to 25,500 feet thick, and beneath the Caribbean much less. The measurements will be continued in the Pacific Ocean as the Albatross works west. An equally novel method of sampling the sediment itself was undertaken. A hollow core of steel was lowered to the sediment and a core of ooze extracted from the sea floor. The cores were sent to Sweden for study. "Assuming the sediment to increase by three inches in 1,000 years in the Atlantic Ocean, the lower strata of a core six meters long should have been deposited nearly 2,000,000 years ago, or before the end of the Tertiary Age," Prof. Pettersson wrote.
Gableites Are Ringsiders For Coliseum Card
(Continued From Page Five) Dave Hendrick and Andy Healy were all right up in front, munching peanuts like mad and giving unsolicited advice to referee and fighters alike. Former Mayor Thomas C. Mayes brought Tom Jr. along to see the show, and Commissioner Frank N. Holley Jr. and Buddy Holley were another father-son duo at ringside. Other fight-smarter sports fans on hand and enjoying the Coliseum card audibly were Coach Jack Harding and his University frosh football coach, Geechee James; Granada Golf Pro Wilbur Umps Clark and City Attorney Ted Semple.
[Stormy weather is often a nightmare...]
Stormy weather is often a nightmare for mother and young fry alike, when they start hunting for "that other" rubber or overshoe. Supply each child with a spring clothes pin to keep each pair fastened together. When bad weather comes, he will find a whole pair without any fuss.
No Gossip
A woman wrote to a daily paper from a very lonely rural spot as follows: "My sister and I aren't exactly lonely out here. We have each other to talk to. But we need another woman to talk about."
Stranded Jokester Doesn't Object
HARRISBURG, Pa. (UP) — This practical joke left George stranded 16 miles from home, but he said it was worth it. Spotting a promising piece of hunting land near a farm house, George (he wants the last name withheld) left his three companions in the car while he went to ask the tenant's permission to hunt. George found the farmer tending an ailing mule. "The vet has given him up and told me the only thing to do is to put him out of his misery, but I can't bear to do it," the farmer told George. An idea struck George. He told the farmer he'd put the mule out of pain and headed back to the car for his gun. His companions eagerly asked if it was all right to hunt. "No," growled George, picking up his gun and loading it. "That old so-and-so; if he won't let us hunt, I'll get even with him! I'm going up there and shoot his mule!" George's friends were horrified. As George raised the weapon to the mule's head, they pleaded with him. "Don't shoot!" one of them cried. "We'll all go to jail!" The gun went off, the mule fell, the car sped away, and George and the farmer were alone-16 miles from town.
