Good Old Days Are No More In Fight Game

In the good old days a prize fighter like Jack Dempsey could gaze out over the ring ropes and see his fortune being made with every grind of the turnstile. Not so today. Long after the sweat has dried from the gladiators, Floyd Patterson and Ingemar Johansson, little men with green eye-shades will be toiling over the books, trying to discern how much money the March 13th heavyweight championship fight actually made. This is due to an outfit called the TelePrompTer Corporation of New York City. TelePrompTer, headed by Irving B. Kahn, is a 20th Century phenomenon. The company holds all the ancillary rights to the fight. Ancillary, as described by Webster, means "... serving as an aid, accessory, or secondary". But the definition is all wet when it comes to the part TelePrompTer plays in the Patterson-Johansson fight. Roy Cohn, a director of Feature Sports, Inc., the New York organization which is promoting the fight in the Miami Beach Convention Hall, predicted the battle will gross close to $5,000,000 with only $1,100,000 coming from the "live" gate if the hall is sold out. The rest will be netted from the ancillary rights, radio, closed circuit TV, movies, etc. All this, save the control of these privileges in the Scandinavian countries, which are owned by the Swede, is the property of Mr. Kahn and his associates, with one exception. Feature Sports receives 15 per-cent of the ancillary rights. TelePrompTer was founded 10 years ago to manufacture the now well-known prompting device for television, motion pictures and public speaking. Several years ago the company became interested in the field of closed-circuit television. There will be no home television for the third Patterson-Johansson duel. "This time we are aiming for a 750,000 seat audience or roughly 200 locations and expect the gross for closed-circuit TV to be two and a half to three million dollars," reports John Barrington, director of public relations for TelePrompTer. Barrington is the former sports editor of INS prior to its merger with the United Press. The all-time record for a closed-circuit telecast of a fight, or for anything else for that matter, was set in the Patterson-Johansson fight last year when 484,894 people paid $2,251,162 to witness the battle in the Polo Grounds.

Dunmire's Engine Analyzer Similar To TV, Aircraft Trouble-Checkers

The Dumont Engine Analyzer actually is an oscillograph similar to those used in television and adapted for use on automobiles," says Gilbert Dunmire, owner of Dunmire's Garage, 241 Almeria Ave., where the Analyzer is put to good use every day. "In fact," Dunmire says "this very machine may be used in small aircraft. The idea of one has been used for the past few years in aircraft, with the engine analyzer actually appearing as one of the controls on the flight engineer's panel." "The flight engineer spots trouble so fast that the pilot may radio ahead for the needed part, and it is waiting when the plane lands. "As for autos, this amazing engine scope tells the mechanic at a glance how all the cylinders are functioning, and points up such troubles as fouled spark plugs, broken distributor wires or defective wiring, or any defect in the ignition system. "For example, today on a missing engine, the analyzer showed the number two cylinder misfiring. I pulled the plug and found it fouled. The job was done in ten minutes. Pinpointing the trouble saved time and eliminated the need of having to disturb anything else," Dunmire explains. A check with the Dumont Engine Analyzer is only $2.00 at Dunmire's Garage. If the car is found to need repairs, you are charged only for the actual work done, and not for the analysis.
