by HELEN REYNOLDS Have you ever realized, how much Florida's first lady, Mrs. Spessard L. Holland and Coral Gables' first lady, Mrs. Paul D. McGarry resemble one another? Of about the same height, both are dark, slender and vivacious. They'll be seated with their distinguished husbands around the celebrity table (the famous Elsa Maxwell will be there) at the President's birthday ball at nine tonight at the Miami Biltmore Country Club. Mrs. Holland has written down that she will wear the same beautiful blue gown banded in lace that she wore for the inaugural ball; Mrs. McGarry will wear a dusty pink mousselin-de-soie with embroidered jacket. Mr. and Mrs. Robert Pentland, Jr., Dr. and Mrs. Horace Cartee will be among the 35 guests seated at the same table, Mrs. Pentland a committee member, will wear a white tulle and lace gown shot with gold threads, the long fitted bodice developed in the lace. Petite and pretty Mrs. Cartee has chosen a model of ocean blue mousslin-de-soie with fitted broaded bodice. Mrs. Fred Wass of Jacksonville will be the week end guest of Mayor and Mrs. Paul D. McGarry. Mrs. Wass came down from Palm Beach yesterday following the state garden club board meeting ... Mrs. McGarry, returned Tuesday from Jacksonville where she met and had a visit with her daughter, Miss Marjorie Ann McGarry on mid-term leave, from Woman's College, Tallahassee ... Mrs. Charles F. Flynn will have as her house guest, her aunt, Mrs. Frank H. Yetman of Dallas, Texas who will arrive Wednesday. Red roses air expressed from the garden of a dear friend in Havana graced the living rooms and library of Senator and Mrs. J. H. Malone's home Sunday for the tea they gave honoring Mrs. A. J. Browne of Key West and Jacksonville. A silver basket of cale lilies and pink roses and silver candelabra holding pink and blue candles tied with tulle centered the tea table. The hostess wore a blue lace dress, pink superspices-orchids. The guest of honor, black taffeta, white brocaded jacket, iris corsage. Mr. and Mrs. J. J. Jones of 811 North Greenway drive have as their guests for a month Mr. and Mrs. A. L. Flynn of Port Washington, L. I. ... Mr. and Mrs. Leo Bowne have as their guests Mr. and Mrs. R. W. Dane, of Beloit, Wis. ... Mrs. Q. C. Schowewark of Chicago, frequent of Coral Gables will arrive the 10th of February for a visit and to board ship for a 45 day cruise to South American waters. . . Mr. and Mrs. F. Wingfield Webster are spending a few days in Blowing Rock, N. C., their summer home and enjoying a "snow scene". Honoring a visitor from Detroit, Mrs. D. R. Traver and her guest, Miss Rita Doyle of Chicago, Mrs. Homer Frazier entertained at three tables of bridge and luncheon Monday at her home, 650 University Drive. The Travers are spending a month aboard their new cabin cruiser, "Detra 2nd" tied up at its own dock at the 79th street causeway. Excitement reigned high this week in Mrs. Ernestine Tylee's household. First because the Tylee Doberman Pinscher named "Ripper" had just won four ribbons at the American Legion dog show; a blue one for best in his class and two thirds and a fourth for obedience tests and second because of the brief visit of Mrs. Tylee's older son, William Tylee home on furlough. Bill had an eye for the beautiful and a genuine love for his mother in his selection of gifts he brought her during his four years as a member of the headquarters detachment of the American Embassy in Pekin, China. Several beautifully embroidered pieces of wearing apparel as well as hangings and a set of dishes, bamboo design. Bill has returned to Santiago to rejoin his ship but he left behind several very handsome scrap books containing pictures of the old and now devastated China. Members and guests of the Men's Brotherhood of the First Presbyterian Church who attend the meeting at 6:30 p. m. next Wednesday at the parish house will have a treat in store for them. Bernard Waite, who with Mrs. Waite has recently bought one of the Getty houses at 3260 Riviera Drive will be the speaker. Mr. Waite was an attache of the American Embassy in Paris and fled with Mrs. Waite after the fall of France to Spain. He will have some very interesting tales to tell, eye witnessed accounts of the war area and of their perilous journey. The Waite's household furnishings are some where enroute to the United States. Coral Gables may be proud of its large airy many-windowed Red Cross, surgical dressing unit room, the use of which is the gift of R. N. Deigard. Fitted with regulation cutting table and storage safe, tables and chairs, volunteer workers are comfortable while doing their bit. The first week's typical day brought out, Mrs. A. G. Person, Mrs. Howard Knoppe, Mrs. J. J. Tillinghast, Mrs. Frank Mackle, Mrs. E. C. Grant, Mrs. A. J. Kennerly, Mrs. F. W. Holliday, Mrs. E. J. Vincent, Mrs. James Coker, Mrs. Ross Sobel, Mrs. George Lobdall, Mrs. Boyd McClain, Mrs. Henry West many others. A record of the hours spent is duly recorded on individual cards on which an entire year's time is computed. Mrs. Charles Susong is supervisor of the unit. Soon to be opened in a room at 208 Alhambra Circle in the Renuart Arcade, donated by Mr. Renuart is the "British Aid to Britian Shop" sponsored by the members of the newly installed "Chaucer Chapter of the Daughters of the British Empire. The new shop will accept anything from a dish to a cast-off dress to sell for Britain's aid.
