Repertory Program Opens Tuesday At The Tower

Coral Gables will see its first program of repertory theatre next week when the Fifteen bring their program of Ibsen to the stage of their playhouse at the Douglas Entrance of the Gables. Some of the most famous roles ever penned for women are the work of Hendrik Ibsen, the great Norwegian dramatist. Just as every actor wants to play "Hamlet", every actress desires some time to be an Ibsen heroine. Within recent memory such fine artists as Nazimova, Blanche Yurka and Ruth Gordon have brought Ibsen to the contemporary American stage with singular success. The most famous Ibsen heroines are Hedda Gabler, Mrs. Alving and Nora Helmer, three magnificent portraits of nineteenth century womanhood, which will be created anew next week by the leading ladies of the Fifteen. Mary Greene will play the title role in "Hedda Gabler", Elisabeth Cope, Mrs. Alving in "Ghosts", and Barbara Parmley, Nora in "A Doll's House". These three plays will hold their turn on the stage of the Theatre of the Fifteen for two weeks of twelve consecutive performances, beginning Tuesday evening, February 4th. "Hedda Gabler" is the offering that evening, and will be repeated again the following night. "Ghosts" opens Thursday, February 6th, and will be repeated Friday. The third and final offering of the series, "A Doll's House", on Sunday will complete the first week of repertory. Once again the Fifteen are making local theatrical history by presenting repertory for the first time in Greater Miami. The value of repertory, even for a comparatively short period of time, is generally recognized in that it enables people to see a group of related plays at their own convenience. Although each play can stand alone, it gains in clarity when seen in relation to the other plays, which together make up an architectural whole. This is particularly true of Ibsen's social dramas. The complete cast of "Hedda Gabler" includes Mary Greene as Hedda; Frank Rollinger, Eilert Lovborg; James Crow, George Tesman; Elsie Werthman, Aunt Juliana; Richard C. Sullivan, Judge Brack; Virginia Adams, Berta. The cast of "Ghosts" includes Elisabeth Cope as Mrs. Alving; Willard Thompson, Oswald; Frank Rollinger, Pastor Manders; Shirley Lois, Regina; James Crow, Engstrand. The cast of "A Doll's House" includes Barbara Parmley as Nora Helmer; Frank Rollinger, Torvald Helmer; Hale McKeen, Dr. Rank; Elise Werthman, Mrs. Linde; Donald Thompson, Krogstad; Daisy Hauck, the nurse; Virginia Adams, the housemaid. During the second week of Ibsen repertory, "Hedda Gabler" will be presented Monday and Thursday, February, February 10th and 13th; "Ghosts", Tuesday and Friday, February 11th and 14th; "A Doll's House", Wednesday and Saturday, February 15th and 15th. Hale McKeen, who has directed a series of plays by Noel Coward, J. B. Priestly and H. G. Well Anderson, directs the Ibsen series. Edward Sheffield has designed both the unusual settings for Ibsen, and has designed a rich Empire background.

Harold Bauer Plays At Beach

Harold Bauer, noted pianist, will appear as the artist of the second concert of the Arnold Volpe Memorial Building Fund series of concerts at the Ida M. Fisher Auditorium at Miami Beach on Monday evening, February 3. Mr Bauer is at present conducting a master class for pianists under the auspices of the University of Miami School of Music from January 24 to March 1, and this appearance is the only one scheduled during his stay here. He is familiar to concert goers of this area through his appearance with the University last year, and is recognized throughout the country as one of the finest interpreters before the public today. Assisting him in his recital is Arthur di Filippi, well-known tenor, at present a member of the University Music faculty. Mr. Di Filippi has appeared in public frequently of late and has won wide acclaim for his fine musicianship and excellent voice. He is also taking a major role in Arnold Volpe's songs on this occasion.

Close Fight For Top Dog At W. Flagler

The feud between My Topper, Bud Carroll's giant brindle, and Fern Nature is developing into a real battle at West Flagler Kennel club. The pair of them have been going great guns since the track inaugurated its 1940-41 meeting. My Topper has had more starts, winning five out of eight races and finishing second in another, while Fern has won four of her five outings and annexed third in the other. At the present writing it appears a tossup which will wind up with the most victories this season. Each has run the 5-16th mile course in 31 4-5 seconds, 3-5th of a second within the world record held by their big brother, Rural Rube. My Topper won in 31 4-5 opening night and came back later to tie the seasonal track record, while Fern Nature also has clipped off the long course in 31 4-5 seconds twice this campaign. My Topper and Fern Nature are out of the same litter. My Laddie is the sire.

Scottish Rite Masons Raise Relief Funds

Over $1,200 of the $3,000 now being raised for immediate relief to Great Britain and Greece by Scottish Rite Masons in the greater Miami area was reported subscribed yesterday, according to James Donn, deputy for the supreme council in South Florida. Progress reports were received at a meeting of the Committee of 32, in whose hands the campaign for funds was placed early last week. The meeting was held in Scottish Rite Temple on N. W. Third street and River drive, where subscriptions are being received through Chas. Aulenbacher, Sec. "Donations already received", Donn added, "reflect profound and widespread interest in the movement. One donation of generous proportion came in from the Miami Chapter, Order of the Eastern Star, and this order is composed entirely of women." Also reported raised, was a separate fund of $1,500 by Scottish Rite Masons of Tampa, who as masons, labor under Deputy Donn's supervision. This fund has already been dispatched to the Supreme Council, who in turn has sent it to the Grand Lodge of Scotland for distribution in Great Britain and Greece.

In Our Mail -OUR READERS WRITE-

Mr. James Moore, Editor, Coral Gables Riviera, Coral Gables, Florida. Dear Mr. Moore: On behalf of the entire Coral Gables Fireman's Benevolent Association, I wish to thank you for your cooperation with us in our event. There is no doubt that your publicity, columns and editorials have aided us greatly to put over our 1940 Dance, Field Day and Christmas Tree. All three, we feel, have been highly successful and much of the credit is due your paper for the any plugs it has given us. We are about to launch our ticket selling drive for our 1941 Dance, and any help you can give us will be greatly appreciated. Thanking you again, I am Very truly your, Geo. W. Mugford Publicity Chairman | Mr. "Jim" Moore, Editor, The Riviera, Coral Gables, Florida. Dear Sir: You have asked for it-apparently with a smile! This "bouquet"-for such it is intended to be-comes from a veteran of the newspaper profession. During a period of over thirty years under a newspaper roof, all within the Chicago area, I came into intimate touch with most of the newspaper problems, and picked up, here and there, some ideas about the functions of an editor. This background is my excuse for accepting your invitation for calling for editorial comments. When the pattern of The Riviera was revised several months ago, I took occasion to voice my pleasure over the new make-up. The change, I felt, was a decided improvement, and subsequent issues have justified the step. There have been occasional shortcomings; this to be expected, you and your associates have performed a useful service, and given Coral Gables a newspaper in which we can all take pride. Perhaps the above is a sufficient re-action on my part. However, I think the best answer to your call for comment, critical or otherwise, is the current (January 10) issue. That first page speaks for itself-the scope and character of the news stories, the well-balanced headlines, the make-up, and all other details are a credit to your organization. Of course, there is equal merit on the other pages-the "Random" notes by Virginia, the "Gablegrams" by Helen Reynolds, the Wells Bruen snappy observations, the Biltmore classic, The Clipper Crowd, the sporting news, and last, but by no means least editorials that are really constructive-and not wobbly! And now, if you should add so-called "comic strips. I say no, for two reasons, First, there are no more "comic" strips. They have been debauched to a shocking degree with all phases of crime. When the strips first came out - some twenty-five years ago-they were really comics, clean and fit for family consumption. How they have degenerated! I close with a tribute to the memory of the late Mr. Francis. It was my pleasure to know him, and due to our newspaper connections, we had many happy talks. Coral Gables lost a good citizen in his passing. Very truly yours, W. O. Hodgon, 3629 Harlano Street, Coral Gables, Florida.
