Gables to Gain By Chest Drive, Bell Declares
Coral Gables, although it is a city without slums, derives direct benefit from the operation of the Dade County Community Chest, according to Wallace Bell, major of the business division in the Gables for the chest's drive for $288,000. "Residents of Coral Gables have at their command all the services of the 20 agencies of the Community Chest," said Bell. "In addition, the Community Chest has taken over the work of the former Coral Gables welfare board, which was one of the seven agencies consolidated into the Family Service Bureau. Money from the chest also is of assistance to the Coral Gables Junior Woman's club in its operation of its excellent dental clinic and school dental service, which rapidly is giving this city the brightest smile in the country. "Other beneficiaries of the chest who live in the Gables are every Boy Scout, as well as each person who is a sharer in the activities of either the Y.M.C.A. or the Y.W.C.A. The welfare of our negro servants also fall within the province of the Community Chest, the Negro Welfare Fereration being one of the chest agencies. "Taking it all in all I see every reason why each Gableite should give generously to the Community Chest in its worthy drive. I see no reason why any one should not give." Assigned as captains to head teams of solicitors under direction of Bell in the chest campaign are George B. Hurst, Don E. Winegar, Robert E. Wynn and Mrs. Celia M. Smith. The task of the business division will be to obtain subscriptions to the chest from business men and institutions. Residential share of the campaign will be born by a group of the women's division headed by Mrs. Malcolm McDonald as major.

Story Of Gas Is Romance Of Accidental Discovery
When the subject of a modern gas system comes up for the approval of the voters of Coral Gables in the near future, you will be asked to consider not a new, untested, unreliable system of heating, cooking and refrigeration, but a type of fuel that has been a friend of mankind for hundreds of years. Far back across the years, when alchemists were looking for a way to make gold, they stumbled across the production of gas. As has so often happened, the alchemists had found something more important than the original object of their quest; but they did not appreciate their discovery—much to the loss of the Middle Ages. The Chinese were the first to use gas in a systematic way, although they were not completely scientific in their methods. They piped gas through bamboo pipelines and used it for lighting. Years and decades of fumbling and sincere attempts to perfect use of gas went by before the groping was crystallized into direct scientific action. In England, in the eighteenth century, an engineer named Murdock, who worked with James Watt, inventor of one of the earliest steam engines, began working on production and use of gas. Murdock distilled coal in an iron retort and conducted the resulting gas through copper tubes into his home. Murdock was the creator of a new industry, which had its foundation in public service and has grown to be a leading element in the home life of every civilized country today. The early experiments led to an era when constant laboratory work produced not only heating and cooking with gas, but also a highly efficient, economical form of refrigeration—all of which resulted from the misguided methods of the early alchemists in their endless, fruitless search for synthetic gold.
