Gablesgrams

By HELEN REYNOLDS Picture a cathedral like room, lighted entirely by candle light, 350 Palm Beach socialites sitting on gold chairs, the tragic figure of Ignace Paderewski, the grand old man of forgotten Poland on the platform and the music of Richard Crooks Metropolitan star, with Warner Handman at the piano and you have a picture of the recent benefit for Poland's relief given at the Edward T. Stotesbury block long home in Palm Beach. To young Warner Handman, who received most of his musical education while living in Coral Gables and who is organist at the First Presbyterian church, the evening will be for ever etched upon his memory; an etching that reflects a sort of woman "major-domo" to take his name on arrival, "I am Richard Crooks accompanist; guides to take him through vaulted marble corridors and up marble staircases to the ball room, the presence of detectives everywhere, the entrance of Mr. Paderewski supported by two nurses; that and the possession of a prized telegram he received from the great Paderewski last Thursday congratulating, thanking and praising him for his music that night. In fact to use Warner's own words, "To think that I actually could play before the great composer was beyond my wildest dreams". Yes, Warner has that telegram framed and hanging over his piano in his studio home. A round of parties has been planned for Mrs. Jay Slaughter and her mother, Mrs. J. W. Cowan, who will arrive Saturday from Post, Texas, for a visit with Mrs. Slaughter's sister-in-law Mrs. Frank Lott and her daughter, Mrs. Marybel Flournoy of 1710 Granada Boulevard. Mrs. Lott will entertain eight guests Sunday night at a turtle steak supper at "The Lighthouse" in honor of her guests and on Tuesday night, a buffet-bridge for 30 guests will take place at the Lott home in honor of the visitors. About 60 guests have been bidden to the Walter Wignan haceinda "Carwig Pines" Hardee Drive from five until eight o'clock on April First to bid farewell to Mrs. Jack Hudock, popular house guest of Mrs. Grace H. Perry who has been widely entertained since her arrival several weeks ago and who will leave for her home in Hazelton, Pa. the next day. Mrs. Arthur O. Hodges, 803 North Greenway Drive had as her luncheon guests, Wednesday Miss Jane Lawrence and Miss Elizabeth Adams of Poughkeepsie, N. Y., who are vacationing at the Savoy Plaza. Mrs. Hodges' recent guests were her niece, Mrs. John H. Wallace and great niece, Mrs. Sherrill M. Smith of Louisville, Ky., who were her guests for three weeks ... Mrs. J. H. Peebles of 621 Alhambra Circle has as her guests, her aunt, Mrs. E. C. B. Muir of Savannah and her sister, Mrs. Thomas Roberts of Coral Gables, whose husband Dr. Thomas is now stationed at Camp Bragg, North Carolina. Mrs. Rowland W. Lassen and Mrs. Louis H. Sanford returned yesterday to New York City after a two weeks visit with Mrs. Lassen's aunt Mrs. John Hone. Mrs. Lassen known on the concert stage and radio networks as Marion Lassen was invited to sing at the opening reception of the National League of Pen Women's mid winter congress just concluded at the Miami Biltmore. Mrs. Sanford (Grace Quirk Sanford) composer-pianist was her accompanist. The Albert H. Gleasons will entertain at cocktails at 6:30 p. m. Y., and who is spending two months at the Shoremede Hotel, Miami Beach will be the guest of honor. There will be about 50 guests. Mr. and Mrs. George L. Hersey have sold their home at 438 Avenue Minorca to the recently wed James L. Bledsoes. Mrs. Bledsoe was the former Miss Zada Burdine, daughter of the late Roddy Burdine. Mr. Bledsoe is in aviation. The Herseys have taken one of the apartments in their building at 216 Coral Way where they will be at home to their friends. It's a real spring house party at the home of Dr. and Mrs. J. Howard Ozias of 4408 Palmarito Street. George A. Saxton, jr., will arrive Monday accompanied by two classmates from Harvard University to spend his Easter vacation with his grandparents, Dr. and Mrs. Ozias and his mother Mrs. George A. Saxton of Short Hills, N. J., who, with her younger son David has been spending a month with her parents. Mr. and Mrs. Ramon E. Ozias, jr., a nephew of Dr. Ozias' and his wife have also arrived for a visit. The men, fishing and prize on the Ozias schooner, "Aneras" will be entertainment for the guests. The members of the Coral Gables division of Women's teams of the Community Chest are to be congratulated upon the efforts they put forth during the recent drive for funds.
