Gablesgrams

by HELEN REYNOLDS Everyone thought it was a wedding anniversary, the John E. Normans were celebrating Sunday afternoon, because the house was so profusely decorated with all white flowers, quantities of Easter lilies, and glads with the hosts themselves in white, but Mr. and Mrs. Norman were only following a custom established years ago in their home of using white (its so cool and inviting looking) for decorations. Only note of color was the quaint Colonial bouquets of the assistants, Mrs. Robert H. Cook, Mrs. Charles G. Brand, Mrs. Hewett Brown, Mrs. Fay Irwin, and her daughter, Miss Ellen Mary Orr; Mrs. Stewart Lee Jeffrey, Mrs. Harold Armstrong, Mrs. Clyde A. Epperson, Mrs. George J. Baya and Mrs. Stephen Ryan. Punch, (Mr. Norman calls it 'moose milk') was served in the breakfast room, overlooking the garden and the solarium. There were 250 guests from Coral Gables, Miami, Miami Beach and Coconut Grove. It's all excitement at the James D. Girtman's home just now, what with the daughter of the house planning her wedding come the 22nd and the telephone ringing to that parties for this popular miss. Not to be outdone, however, by his sister, Charles Girtman and Miss Sally Burrus were wed April 15 and have just returned from their honeymoon trip to Cuba. They will live in Miami where Charles, a graduate of the University of Miami and a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon is a practicing attorney. The junior Mrs. Girtman is a popular member of the Axacia club. Mr. and Mrs. Frederick Leser of 644 Alhambra Circle are leaving this week for a motor trip through California and the far west. The Lesers maintain homes in New York City and Nantucket but are calling Coral Gables home, more months out of each succeeding year. Mrs. James Mcfarlane who will be hostess Monday afternoon at her home, 1709 Granada Boulevard to the members of the American Association of University Women, is planning to reverse the usual order and give her guests tea first. That, to us sounds like a very sensible idea. With the social hour starting at 3:30 the program will follow. Mrs. Paul McGarry is writing enthusiastic letters home all about the lilacs and apple blossoms in bloom in Hendersonville, N. C., Mrs. McGarry is spending a week with her son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Lewis Campbell Boyd, nee Nell McGarry and enjoying a look at Nell's lovely new home, in the mountain resort city. Highlight of the tea-musical given Saturday at the home of Mrs. T. G. Leitch for Britians aid was the duet and arias from Puccini's La Boheme sung by Arturo di Filippi and Mrs. James Marshall. Mrs. Marshall, a pretty young blond has a surprisingly lovely soprano voice. She and her husband Captain Marshall are living in the penthouse atop the former San Sebastian Hotel. Mrs. Marshall, a puil of di Fillipi has studied at the Julliard School of Music. The Coral Gables Garden Club deserve praise for its noteworthy decorations and flower arrangements for the city's luncheon Monday, honoring the National Editorial Association delegates at the Country Club. The club combined freshly cut coconut blossoms, rear bleached ivory, and red amaryllis blooms in large vases. Quantities of gardenias decorated the tables. Tiny orange colored calamondins were festooned to the tablecloths, and last but not least the hibiscus flowers used were of the double peach color variety. Favorable comments and questions were heard on every side. Mrs. Evan D. Roser retiring president of the Coral Gables Woman's Club entertained the retiring board and library board at a May Day tea Thursday at her home. The Gods smiled away the rain Wednesday afternoon just for the marriage at three of Miss Betty Geer and Edgar McKee at the First Presbyterian Church; for Betty's wedding gown was an especially dyed gray sheer sent from Wanamakers and raindrops would have been just too bad. We wish to thank our many readers who phoned in thanking us for our open letter in Gablesgrams to the Sandy Sandquists in last week's birthday edition. The Sandquists "ears" should burn and they ought to be tumbling lids of tiffany if everyone wrote, who said our timely letter reminded them to do likewise. And while we are taking bows, we also want to thank those who have complimented us on the new photo above. We really didn't think it meant so much. Flies To Coast Little Miss Tessie Ann Beaton, nine year old granddaughter of Mr. and Mrs. R. J. Beaton, 508 Majorca, carrying a sleeping doll in one arm and her Easter Bunny in the other, was quite the delight of crew and passengers on the hugh air-liner Friday as she traveled alone by air to her parents and home in Los Angeles Calif., after a six weeks visit.

Joint installation of the new officers of both clubs will follow the breakfast. Decorations and flowers will center a spring motif. Amusing little picket fences intersperced with the spring flowers in garden effect will be placed on the tables as centerpieces. Mrs. Charles J. Susong, incoming president is general chairman for the party. Mrs. Evan D. Roser, out going president will preside and act as toastmaster. Mrs. H. G. Lesley is chairman for the juniors, assisted by Mrs. W. R. Blackwood and Mrs. D. D. Anderson. Mrs. J. H. Brock and Mrs. L. B. Wilkes will arrange the flowers, assisted by Mrs. Frank Andre, Mrs. Harry Meigs, Mrs. W. H. Redfearn and Mrs. A. C. McConnel. Mrs. Clyde Higgins, popular member of the senior club and talented singer will sing a group of numbers. Mrs. John Wade and Mrs. E. B. Hunter are receiving reservations for the breakfast which should be in by today.

Bride of the week is the lovely Mrs. Donald Hamilton Randell pictured above. As the former Miss Patricia Crandon her marriage to Capt. Randell of the United States Army creates wide social interest in the entire South as well as in the New England States and New York. -Bachrach Photo

Simplicity marked the wedding of Miss Betty Elizabeth Geer and Edgar McKee, which took place at 3 p. m. Wednesday in the chancel of the First Presbyterian Church. Dr. Nevin C.
