Gablesgrams by HELEN REYNOLDS
by HELEN REYNOLDS Circling southern Florida in a week end jaunt, it was our priveledge and pleasure to have luncheon Sunday at the new Clewiston Inn, Clewiston. The arrival at Clewiston, whether from the south or the western part of the state is like a breath of spring. Its lawns are greener, its flowers brighter and by no stretch of the imagination can one conceive of the vastness of the rich black loam farm lands, where the sugar cane grows so abundantly unless one sees it. At the lovely Inn, French Colonial in design we glimpsed, Mr. and Mrs. George R. Hilty and their two sons; Mr. and Mrs. Clement B. Chinn, Mr. and Mrs. George B. Romfh, Jr., and Mrs. Romfh's mother Mrs. Myer Culbertson all of Miami having luncheon. . . . Flowers, especially Petunias greeted the eye in lavish display at street intersections in every town. Jacaranda trees were in full bloom and Lake Wales makes the most of these beautiful flowering trees. Spaced at intervals down the center parkway of the main street, the effect was that of a feathery lavender cloud hanging in the sky . . . Ft. Myers is famous to most visitors for two things: the home of the late great Thomas A. Edison and the long wide avenue of hugh stately Royal Palms, now full grown and more than 70 feet in height. We spent the night at Mrs. E. F. Scott's "Montel" on Lee Street. Mrs. Scott's father, Mr. Washburn had the only general store in Ft. Myers and was there when Mr. Edison decided the beauties of Charloote Harbor was the place to build his home. From the pleasant Mrs. Scott, we learned that Mrs. Edison was still in residence. Lcaring also that Mrs. Edison's sister, Mrs. C. C. Miller of Akron, Ohio, and Ft. Myers was also at her home in Rio Vista, we called her by telephone and thrilled again to her beautiful resonant voice, for, as Miss Grace Miller she had been our French teacher many years ago, at her private school for girls at "Oak Place" the Miller home and still a land mark in downtown Akron, O. Mrs. Edison and Mrs. Hitchcock had recently been in the Miami area noting flowers and farms for the Edison memorial library grounds to be built soon at Ft. Myers. Mrs. Lillian Patton De Long, accompanied by her daughters, Catherine and Betty will leave the last of this month for Hendersonville, N. C. Two years ago, De Long has leased a 25 acre farm, complete with large rambling farm house, cows and chickens etc., from friends who plan to spend the summer in California and Alaska. Miss Catherine has already shipped her thoroughbred to the North Carolina farm and will again take part in the southern horse shows, in which she has been accorded the honor of judging many classes. Mr. and Mrs. John Moon will leave this week for their summer home in Butler, Pa., after having spent the season at their home 3800 Granada Boulevard . . . Mrs. D. C. Everest also left this week for hernorne in Wisconsin after spending the season at her home on the University Drive waterway. Mr. Everest spent part of the winter and was down for Christmas. Warren Jamieson, an Eastern Air Lines pilot and Mrs. Jamieson will return to Coral Gables to live after several months in Atlanta. They have leased the home at 605 Avenue Majorca, now occupied by Mrs. Clarence T. Francis and her son, Taylor who will graduate in June from Ponce de Leon High School. Following graduation Mrs. Francis and Taylor will leave for Richmond, Va., their former home for an indefinite stay. Complimenting a group of friends who plan to leave early for the mountains and other northern vacations, Mrs. Edwin N. Belcher will entertain the first in a series of spring and summer teas from 5 until 6 tomorrow afternoon at her North Greenway Drive home. Mrs. John B. McLeod and Mrs. E. N. Belcher, Jr., daughter and daughter-in-law will receive with the hostess. Others assisting will be; Mrs. John A. Gautier, Mrs. Philip Seifert, Mrs. William Reeder and Mrs. Roland Griffin. Dr. and Mrs. Frank W. Cady, 1106 Avenue Asturia will have as their week end guests Mr. and Mrs. Stanley S. Hunting of St. Petersburg. Mrs. Cady is planning a large tea complimenting Madame Elizabeth Antonava next Thursday. Beginning their summer series of bridge parties, a group of Coral Gables ladies who have played together weekly, for the past seven years met Tuesday at the home of Mrs. H. O. Johnson, 234 Avenue Camila. The group played during the winter at the Green Candle tea room . . . Another bridge eight who meet at ten oclock, on Tuesdays, play bridge and then have luncheon are, Mrs. Thomas Mayes, Mrs. E. F. P. Brigham, Mrs. Hewett Peebles, Mrs J. M. McAlister, Mrs. William Lytle, Mrs. Emily Keck, Mrs. J. M. Coker and Mrs. Malcolm McDonald. Mrs. Frank E. Lott, 1314 Granada Boulevard was most pleasantly surprised Saturday by her mother, Mrs. John B. Slaughter, Sr. who arrived to spend a month with her. ior Mrs. Slaughter who is 84 years young lives at the "U-Lazy-S" Ranch in Texas. She was accompanied here by Mrs. C. D. Morrel of Post, Texas. Mrs. Lott will entertain 24 guests today at a bridge luncheon for her mother, many other parties will be planned for the visitors. Mr. and Mrs. W. Scott Deming left Wednesday for a leisurely trip to their summer home in Indianapolis. They plan to spend some time at "The Cloister," Sea Island, Ga., then to Myrtle Beach, N. C., where they will be guests at The Ocean Forest Hotel for a few days, Newport News, Va., and Washington, D. C., then on to Cumberland, Md., . . . Capt. and Mrs. E. B. Wharton are visiting their son and daughter-in-law at Sandston, Va., also Mrs. Wharton's sister and brother-in-law, Major and Mrs. W. V. Davis at Ft. Monroe. Later they will visit New Jersey points. Mr. and Mrs. William H. Huntley had the thrill of seeing their horse, "Sergeant Bill" win in his first race at Churchill Downs. Bill, Jr., the Huntley son came over for Derby day and a reunion with his parents. Bill will graduate June 2 from McCallie Military School, Chattanooga. Then with his parents will return to Coral Gables to spend the summer.

Surprise Shower Given Miss Riesenberg
The "Romance of Monterey Street" might well have been the title of the surprise miscellaneous shower given Miss Doris Riesenberg bride-elect of Heaterly Onesly Wednesday night, at the home of Mrs. Jean Jaster and Mrs. John Williams. The party was attended by most of the residents of the street and a few friends of Miss Riesenberg's. The marriage of the young couple, which will take place the first week in June, culminates a romance that began on the "street" where they both have lived since last September but only met last winter. A white wedding bell attached to the chandelier in the dining room, wide white satin ribbons and decorations in pink and white carried out the bridal theme. A bride's cake adorned the center of the table outlined with pink gladioli blossoms.

CORAL GABLES WOMEN CAN COOPERATE
Coral Gables housewives can cooperate with the stores and shops in the Wednesday afternoon closing by granting their maids that afternoon in place of the accustomed Thursday. Since Coral Gables has decided to abide by Miami's decision in the Wednesday closing during the months of June, July and August, housewives will probably find it to their advantage and less confusion to ask the domestics to change to the "day-off" earlier schedule.
Charles J. White and Joseph Moran will return to day from a fishing cruise among the Florida Keys.
