Gables' Potential Draftees to Register at Fire Station

New Lists To Be Made On July 1

Final instructions for the registration of Coral Gables' youths who have reached the age of 21 since October 16, 1940, were released yesterday by local Draft Board 7. The registration, under the Selective Service Act, will be conducted Tuesday, July 1 at the draft board headquarters in the fire and police station, Salzedo Street and Avenue Aragon. Registration hours are between 7 a. m. and 9 p. m. Draft Board 7 will also open an auxiliary registration office in the Homes, and American Legion Post, for persons living in the southern part of the district. Persons who will not be in this vicinity on July 1 may register at the nearest draft board, officials stated, and arrangements will be made for special registrars to register those in the board 7 area who are sick either in hospitals or confined to their home. Inmates of insane asylums, jails, penitentiaries, reformatories or similar institutions on registration day, will be registered on the day they are released from the institution by those in charge at the institution. Also required to register are persons who were between the ages of 21 and 36 on last registration day (October 16, 1940) but who have not previously registered. The cards to be filled out will be the same as on the first registration with the exception that they will be melon colored. Persons who were qualified, but who failed to register last October, will use the familiar white cards. While the local board officials made no estimate of the number of registrants anticipated, they expressed confidence that the two registration places would be ample to take care of the complete list.

U. S. Cadets Welcome British Fledglings at Carlstrom Field

ARCADIA, FLA., June—U. S. Army Air Corps cadets gave 99 British fledgling flyers an enthusiastic welcome at the Riddle Aeronautical Institute, Carlstrom Field, here this week, when the first contingent of RAF cadets arrived for primary flight instruction at this famous World War I air base. Top shows N. P. Davis, cadet captain, presenting the Union Jack to Flight Leaders William Harrison and Jimmy Stonier as John Paul Riddle, school head, and Len Povey, general manager, look on. Both the American and British fledglings formed the background for the colorful ceremony, the former on the left, wearing flight equipment, and the British, on the right, still in civilian clothing. Bottom photo shows Group Captain D. V. Carniege, of the RAF, congratulating Stonier on being the first Britisher to take to the air. The instructor is Jack S. Hunt, of the Riddle Aeronautical Institute.

Florida Holds Defense Key

OCALA, Fla., June 24 (Special)—Florida holds the key to the defense of the Western Hemisphere and will be the "springboard" for repelling any attempt to seize control of the Caribbean Sea, Rupert Caviness, newly-elected commander of the Florida Department of the American Legion, declared here today. Commander Caviness said there were indications that the Federal Government "will pour more millions for defense" into the Florida peninsula to supplement important air, navy and army bases already constructed, under construction, or authorized. The fact that Florida has been selected as the site for extensive military preparations, Commander Caviness said, is indicative of its importance in defense. The peninsula, which guards the South Atlantic entrance into the Caribbean, has a coastline of nearly 1,000 miles, much of which would afford strategic landing spots for an attempted invasion of the United States, he declared. Almost every local airport in the state, Caviness declared, is being prepared for use by the army. Here at Ocala, for instance, he said some $400,000 are being spent for extension of runways and additional hangars to permit the landing and housing of army planes. There also is renewed interest by the Government, Caviness said, in continuance of work on the trans-Florida ship canal, a $200,000,000 venture started in 1935 by an appropriation of $5,000,000 by President Roosevelt.

The money would go primarily to completing road links connecting military points within the state.

Dividend Is Declared by Power Company

Approximately 5,000 stockholders of the Florida Power & Light Company will receive dividend checks on or about July 1, paying up back dividends on the $7 Preferred Stock withheld since 1933. With the current quarterly dividend of $1.75 a share, the total of this dividend payment will amount to $36.32 a share. Payment of back dividends in full at this time was made possible by the recent sale of the Miami Water Company and the Miami Beach Railway Company, former subsidiaries of the power company. The dividend was declared June 16, at a meeting of the Florida Power & Light board of directors. It will be paid to all stockholders of record at the close of business June 21. A large percentage of the stockholders are Floridians. The extraordinary payment will be made on about 156,000 shares. It represents back dividends for the years 1933, 1934, 1935 and 1936, and partial unpaid dividends for 1937 and 1938. The company has been making full dividend payments since October, 1939. McGregor Smith, Florida Power & Light president, and Coral Gables resident, pointed out that during the depression years the company had withheld dividends in order to conserve its cash. "During these past years," he explained, "the management felt its first duty was to keep the company in such a cash position that it could meet all service demands put upon it. This period covered a depression followed by large building activities in the communities served. All of these service demands have been met. The company completed and put into operation last December a new 30,000 kilowatt generator unit at its steam electrical station near Fort Lauderdale. Work is progressing according to schedule on another 30,000 kilowatt unit at the Miami Beach station, which unit should be in operation by the end of the year. Both of these plants serve the inter-connected system." On April 4th the City of Miami acquired the water distribution system and a month later the company sold its Miami Beach transportation system to W. D. Pawley and his associates. In his statement on the dividend payment, President Smith commented, "Our company should now be in better position to go forward with any program for the growth and development of the communities we serve."
