International Relations Group A. A. U. W., Hears About Peace Plan
Reporting to the International Relations group of the AAUW at the home of Mrs. James MacFarlane on Monday, Mrs. W. E. Heinltsh said that a three phase program for extending friendship between university women in the western hemisphere would include the exchange of teachers, the promotion of classes in Spanish and English, and the extension of the youth hostel plan to encourage student travel in all the countries. Mrs. Heinltsh attended the recent meeting of the Regional Conference, International Federation of University Women at Havana, Cuba as an observer. Mrs. Clark Stearns, speaker at the meeting, reminded university women that the term "peace" had small significance if it only implied the cessation of fighting. The only peace that can be acceptable now is a harmonious cooperation between nations, with justice. Mrs. Stearns, who organized the Pan American League in Mia mi, eleven years ago, quoted economic authorities who believe that the present World War perhaps upset Germany's plan to control the Americas, for German control of only one large country in South America would give her economic control in the hemisphere. Also speaking at the meeting were Miss Laura D. Newman, of St. Catherine's, Ontario, one of the three official delegates from Canada to the Havana Conference, and Mrs. Rufus Emery who attended the Conference as an observer. Among the guests were Mrs. Howard Rose also of St. Catherine's Ontario and Mrs. W. P. Fiell of Havana.
