Biltmore Briefs
BY MILTON CHAPMAN The first week of the season is now history, but happy history, indeed. The 49th annual convention of the United States Savings and Loan League proved to be as interesting as it was congenial, and the entire staff at the Biltmore is sorry to see the delegates leave here. Reports were that the majority of our guests were deeply impressed with Coral Gables and the Miami area, and I'm sure we will see them back again. Despite the busy week occasioned by an actual full Chapman house of guests I sat down with our police chief the other night and was entranced by the various interesting stories he had to tell. This is the first trip to Florida for Edward J. O'Neill, a retired New York police captain and now chief house officer at the Biltmore. But that retirement proposition belies his age, for Captain O'Neill is only 43 years old; the youngest captain ever to retire from the ranks of New York's finest. It took quite a bit of second ding to get the captain to tell us that he was cited three times for bravery, under as many commissioners. He'll tell you that "it's all in the day's work". And, indeed; it is a day's work! It was on Feb. 25, 1925, that O'Neill, then a dective, second grade, captured five armed safe breakers. He received a phone call from a theater a couple of blocks from the station house that a film deliverer could not gain entrance. Now, a film deliverer is a man who goes from one playhouse to another in the wee small hours of the morning, exchanging films from one theater to another. This particular deliverer thought it queer that he got no response to his efforts to enter, so notified the police. Most of the force was at a special dinner at New York's Hotel Astor, hence Detective O'Neill was alone on the desk. He answered the call, believing it to be possibly a routine matter. "They went by me like flies," he said, referring to the gunmen. But he captured all five of them, under fire, and all were convicted of breaking and entering E. M. Lowe's theater at 156th Street and Third Avenue, the Bronx. O'Neill was cited for bravery. His second citation came the following year, 1926, after he had captured, with a fellow detective, three bandits who held up and robbed a jeweler at Westchester Avenue, the Bronx, of $19,000 in jewels. It took eight weeks' work to capture the men, is the modest explanation the captain will give. The third bravery citation came in 1928 on the heels of his capture of five men who had held up and robbed a factory of $5,000 in currency. Three of the men were apprehended within 28 hours of the crime, and their captor led to the apprehension of the remaining two. O'Neill, by that time, was an acting lieutenant. Appointed to the New York force in 1920, Captain O'Neill served under three commissioners: Richard E. Enright, Edward J. Mulrooney and Lewis J. Valentine. He was promoted to a sergeancy in 1928, a lieutenancy in 1931, and a captaincy in 1937, the position he held at the time of his retirement last August. At the time of his retirement, Captain O'Neill was in command of the 110th precinct, which covered the New York World's (Please turn to Page 8)
