King's Daughters Holds Annual Election Meeting

The annual business meeting and election of officers of the Greater Miami Circle of the International Order of The King's Daughters and Sons was held recently at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Frederic Bond, 444 S. W. 25th Road. After reports and plans for further civic and patriotic work, patriotic songs were sung by Mrs. Wade Livingston Street with Mrs. Florence Dunlop at the piano. An account of The King's Daughters work in Iowa was given by Mrs. E. J. Sankey, a winter visitor from Waterloo, Iowa, and readings were given by Frederic Bond. The following officers were elected for 1942: President, Mrs. J. H. Zimmerman; first vice-president, Mrs. J. J. Russell; second vice-president, Mrs. M. C. Cronin; recording secretary, Mrs. F. C. Latimer; corresponding secretary, Mrs. H. H. Trice; treasurer, Mrs. C. W. Bainbridge; adviser, Mrs. Frederic Bond, second vice-president of the International Order.

Club Plans Stamps As Tournament Prizes

A strong note of patriotism will be injected into the Coral Gables Woman's Club annual bridge tournament this year, when top and second prize winners for the series will receive $10 and $5, respectively, in United States Defense Stamps. The series of parties will be inaugurated on Friday, January 16th, at the clubrooms, where play will begin promptly at 10 A. M. and conclude at 12:30. The bridge will continue at the same time on Fridays for eight consecutive weeks and the best five scores out of eight will be taken for the two top prize winners. Mrs. Leo Brown is in charge of the tournament, with Mrs. E. B. Hunter and Mrs. L. E. Huguelet assisting.

HOW MATERIAL SHORTAGES AND DEFENSE REQUIREMENTS AFFECT TELEPHONE SERVICE

From 1931 through 1939 Southern Bell service was brought to a peak of efficiency never before attained. During these years we had full margins of plant facilities, and most telephone workers were veterans with years of experience and training. These conditions created a situation ideal for concentration on the betterment of the speed and quality of our services. Now the situation is reversed. Defense requirements, both military and industrial, as well as unprecedented demands for individual service, have placed exceptional burdens on our physical resources and manpower. Added to this is the tremendous increase in local and long distance calls, which combined have developed service demands without parallel in our history. Thousands of new workers have been employed and trained, and millions of dollars have been spent to expand our facilities to meet these heavy demands. We hope you will agree that we have so far been generally successful in meeting the demands for telephone service, great as they have been. Because of conditions beyond our control, such as the shortage of copper and other essential materials, it may be, as time goes on, that we cannot continue to meet the demands in certain congested areas with the same success. However, we pledge you that we shall continue to do our very best, with the determination to accomplish the impossible rather than trying to show why the possible can't be done. Now we have bowling shorts to add to our active sportswear wardrobe. Pretty CBS songstress Louise Tobin wears a pair here in a forest green crease-resistant rayon material, which are fashioned like a divided skirt. Her blouse is printed in red and green cowboys, cactus and sagebrush. (From Maurice Everetts, Calif.)

Splashy prints in high shades on white backgrounds will be featured by many designers in 1942 resort collections. Ginny Simms wears here Violet Tatum's cactus print dinner gown in brilliant shades of greens and violet. Notice the simplicity of its styling—slight front drape and train—which displays the print to full advantage.

Slack suits with a gay red waistcoat is worn here by Kathryn Keyes. It shows the new trend in dressmaker slacks suit with its full-sleeved Gauchita blouse in red and beige plaid sheer wool, slim slacks in beige and vest with nipped-in waist. (From Murray Goldstein, Los Angeles.)

STRAIGHT FROM NEW YORK

BALLET LENGTH FOR DANCING So-called "ballet-length," or mid-calf length, skirts are seen at all the winter resorts and at hometown dances. Girls put velvet ribbons on their toeless lustrous slippers when wearing the new ballet-length evening dresses, winding the ribbon about their ankles for a true ballerina effect. This New York creation has a "ballet-length" skirt of lustrous black taffeta over a pink satin petticoat, and a simple jersey bodice.

Diary of a Beauty Authority

By HELENA RUBENSTEIN (The famed beautician stresses the importance of face powders in this week's article.) NEW YORK, Jan. 15.—Like every other American city, this great metropolis is now preparing for war 24 hours a day. Women are devoting much of their spare time to the Red Cross, to the American Women's Voluntary Services, and to other defense project which will help us to deal successfully with any emergency. There is a good deal of talk about a possible shortage in cosmetics due to the war, and any number of women have come to us asking whether they will soon find themselves without lipstick or face powder or face cream and what to do about it. In these troubled times, the importance of beauty in maintaining a woman's morale and providing her with hope and courage cannot be overestimated, and it would be a good thing if every women began now to conserve her beauty preparations, in the face of a possible shortage in the future. Today I received a letter from a young woman in England serving in the Women's Auxiliary Air Force, part of which reads: "I don't think I shall ever get used to doing without the beauty preparations I used to take so much for granted. I wish now that I had not been so wasteful when cosmetics were plentiful. Do advise American women to treasure their beauty preparations in preparing for the future." This is excellent advice, and going even further, I think every women would benifit by making a little beauty plan for herself to help her conserve her beauty preparations. She should save all her cases and buy refills as much as possible. She should begin to simplify her beauty care and learn to use one good all-purpose cream for cleansing, lubrication and massage. And she should cut down on her hairdressing problems by wearing her hair in one of the new, short easy-to-keep coiffures, which, by the way, are also much more serviceable for active duty—yet can be transformed into a glamorous evening coiffure by the addition of one of those facinating new false chignons or braid pieces which match your own hair exactly. With a little intelligent planning, there is no need to worry about doing without the essentials of beauty in the future. Every woman should regard it as part of her job in the national defense program to keep herself looking as young and lovely as the men in the service expect her to look.
