'Christian Science: The Science of Existence'

A Lecture on Christian Science Entitled Christian Science: The Science of Existence BY Dr. Hendrik J. de Lange, C.S.B. of New York City Member of the Board of Lectureship of The Mother Church, The First Church of Christ, Scientist, in Boston, Massachusetts Sponsored by First Church of Christ, Scientist A lecture on Christian Science, entitled "Christian Science: The Science of Existence," was delivered in the Coral Gables Elementary School auditorium Thursday, 15th, 1942, under the auspices of First Church of Christ, Scientist, by Hendrik J. de Lange, C.S.B.,of New York City was the lecturer. Dr. de Lange is a member of the Board of Lectureship of The Mother Church, The First Church of Christ, Scientist, in Boston, Massachusetts. The lecturer spoke substantially as follows: According to Christian Science, the Biblical declaration that God is One and All reveals the basic truth of existence. True Christian Science challenges the increasing complexities and complications of mortal sense testimony. The understanding of Christian Science as the Science of Existence has practical value in daily life. More than ever this discovery shows forth the necessity of being awake to one's erroneous modes of thinking. Simultaneously one has to be conscious of the true or spiritual sense of existence. In this manner, the healthy and happening condition of Life as it really is becomes one's natural experience. Existence Mental Activity The possibility of such a radical change is understood when one recognizes that existence is primarily a mental activity. This may be considered self-evident: Nobody exists without mentality. Therefore, mentality sustains everything, since to argue which argues that there is something outside of mentality-the material world, so called. Mrs. Eddy describes the basic truth of existence in the following words (Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, p. 275): "All metaphysics, as revealed to spiritual understanding, shows clearly that all is Mind, and that Mind is God, omnipotence, omnipresence, omniscience,-that is, all power, all presence, all Science. Hence all is by reality the manifestation of Mind." Mrs. Eddy Divinely Inspired This author of the textbook just quoted came to these fundamental conclusions in a truly spiritual way- non-by pure inspiration, not by mere human reasoning. There never existed a more genuinely intuitive woman than Mrs. Eddy. She embodied spiritual intuition and unfailingly followed it up with penetrating, irreproachable, and purely logical thoughts. This accounts for her being so inspirational to Christian Scientists and progressive in her scientific conclusions and demonstrations. Her healing was the result of spirituality perceiving the true nature of existence, regardless of material appearances. Her unselfish character evidenced itself in discovering that spiritual healing was not exceptionally her good fortune, but in accordance with divine law and thereby available to all. In order to establish among mankind this healing and saving knowledge of existence as it really is, Mrs. Eddy founded and became the Leader of a great movement the purpose of which is to make known the whole of this healing and saving knowledge. For which she intended to provide and protect the permanent work giving the complete system of Christian Science. She called her book "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures." This textbook together with the Bible she ordained as the pastorless pastor of all Christian Science churches throughout the world. Reasoning from Cause to Effect In Christian Science one thinks from cause to effect. The nature of the one primal cause determines what is true and real as effect. Whatever appears as contrary to the nature of the one cause must be classified as unreal and untrue, however true and real it may seem to be from within its own misconception. Hence the conclusion in Science and Health (p. 126) that "everything entitled to a classification as truth, or Science, must be comprised in a knowledge or understanding of God." One's faculty to discern the ideas of infinity, eternality, oneness, perfection, allness-however dim or restricted this perception may seem to be-shows they must come from and their existence points to the fact that they must have a source. The nature of this source must be infinite, eternal, one, perfect, perfection, allness-in other words, this source is God. Christian Science assumes that infinity contains matter; that eternality contains time; that oneness contains duality; that perfection contains imperfection; that allness contains lack. For this reason, matter, time, duality, imperfection, lack-and thereby sin, sickness, and death-are necessarily to be classified as unreal and untrue. For the one who has been habitually thinking about himself as a material person, the dawning understanding of the unreality of sin, sickness, and death-are necessarily to lutionary effect. He begins to discern that the only correct way to think of himself must be in terms of divine ideas expressing divine Principle. Otherwise, he ascribes to himself something unreal and untrue. Divine Principle is always expressing itself in direct accordance with its own divine and perfect character-that which divinely or truly exists. This leads to the conclusion that whatever is real and true concerning oneself is to be found exclusively in divine knowledge or Science. Man's Real Selfhood Christian Science refutes material sense testimony with its belief about man as being equipped with a sinful human mind imprisoned in a destructible material body. To man is assigned the exalted status of divine, direct manifestation or idea. In this sense, the textbook (Science and Health, p. 475) defines man as "the compound idea of God, including all right ideas." God, divine Mind, the one and All-Being, is conscious of itself only. In this self-consciousness, Mind expresses itself as man. Understanding the divine reality of one's selfhood or existence, one can readily see that whatever is destructible does not belong to divine reality. This is done by determining, correctly, subjectively living-that is, by being conscious of the true definition of oneself. The liberating effect in the minds of any identification with divine power. Christ Jesus furnishes the example. The Master's Mission Christ Jesus' nature and mission were better understood by Mary Baker Eddy than by anyone else. She comprehended that his mission consisted in breaking down that "middle wall of partition." The revelation of God as divine Principle made her aware of the fact that the words of the Master were natural and scientific in the highest sense of these words, and made miraculous to human comprehension. As a result of this, it is evident that the works of the Master are to be renewedly shown forth wherever Christ-knowledge prevails and to the extent it is emulated. Christ Jesus' supremacy is apparent in that he has been unsurpassed in his healing works. Science and Science and Health states (p. 473): "Jesus is the name of the man who, more than all other men, has presented Christ, the true idea of God, healing the sick and the sinning and destroying the power of death." The textbook (p. 332) defines Christ as "the divine image and likeness, dispelling the illusions of the senses; the Way, the Truth, and the Life, healing the sick and casting out evils, destroying sin, disease, and death." The indisputable fact of divine reality as infinite Truth and perfection does indeed, to human sense, appear as if it were a mission to heal the human sense of existence as the way of progressive discernment. At first it seems to be merely a promise of good to come, heralded by the prophets as the Messiah. Then it appears as a person who comforts and heals. Finally, in full-orbed glory, it is practical and as the Christ-Science or Science of Christianity. But all the while the Messiah's mission remained the same: the redemption of humanity. Thus the Messiah appeared first as a promise, then as a person, and finally as Science, the Science of Existence. According to the Old Testament, salvation indeed was a distant future possibility. According to the New Testament, salvation was made interpreted as a belief in a personal Jesus. In terms of Christian Science, salvation is "Life, Truth, and Love understood and demonstrated as supreme over all; sin, sickness, and death destroyed" (Science and Health, p. 593). Thus humanity is now being provided with a scientific reason which is freeing it from all ills, sins, discords, fears, and limitations. This entails the discernment of existence as it really is. It means the refusal to accept a false sense of self, accompanied the recognition of true selfhood as the Im-material, ever-present Christ. You and I are able to acknowledge this Christ, and our salvation is showing it forth. This takes place by ceasing from "man, whose breath is in his nostrils"-that is, by refusing to think of oneself from a personal point of view. Instead of such superficiality, we must behold existence from, not by shape, and we must identify ourselves with the divine ideas thus revealed. We have to affirm as true for ourselves whatever is true of the nature of divine Truth, and we have to deny as untrue whatever is not in accordance with the divine nature. No Identity for Mortal Suggestions It does not make the least difference whether the false suggestion comes as "I have a problem," or as "my difficulty," or as "humanity is in trouble." In no case must the suggestion be accepted. As long as I think that I know the Truth, but at the same time continue to admit that "he," or "they," or "humanity at large" has difficulties, I have implicitly admitted a very questionable error, impeding my own progress. When one discerns and discriminates between what seems to be one's own problems and those of others, the oft-repeated complaint that it is so much easier to help somebody else in Christian Science than oneself will not be any more heard. It is never one's own problem; it is always a problem of the mentality, human concept-the human concept being a problem in itself. On the basis of the allness, oneness, and reality of divine Mind, what we mortal think, so called, has no presence, power, reality, entity, or identity. This leads to the conclusion that all there is to error is its admission and the admission a mistake. When I stop admitting error to the extent that I do not even any more accept the belief that someone else admits it, in that ratio this is the end of that error. There is encouragement in knowing that from start we can never really started-evil having no origin, since it is wholly fictitious and negative-its end is always now. Treatment Utilization of Truth The thought activity here indicated is the Christian Science prayer or treatment. Briefly, it may be defined as the utilization of divine power, eliminating whatever suggestions may seem to have leaped themselves between oneself and his primal source, or preventing such erroneous occurrences. Affirmation of the truth and denial of error constitute the treatment. Although humanly appearing as the dualism or thought of a human, the affirmation of the truth is really Truth expressing itself. Error is always self-denied. In "Miscellaneous Writings" by Mary Baker Eddy, this illuminating statement appears (p. 259): "The consciousness of good has no consciousness or knowledge of evil; and evil is not a quality to be known or conscious of good." The fact of the allness of Truth makes possible the nothingness of error. If Truth were not all, error would have entity and reality; consequently it could not be regarded as nothing. Christian Science treatment cannot the function of divesting error of the possibility of perpetuating itself. The affirmation of the truth should have immediate healing effect. And it has this effect when it takes place in the way it is so authoritatively set forth in Science and Health (p. 411), "If Spirit or the power of divine Love bear witness to the truth, this is the ultimatum, the scientific way, and the healing is instantaneous." In this affirmation of the truth, one has the right basis for denying the belief in error. As far as the situation requires it-that is to say, if the healing should not be instantaneous. Nevertheless, the affirmation constitutes in itself the whole of the treatment. The denial of argument is always a human auxillary to the affirmation of the truth, that the treatment may arrive at that state where it can only be understood and felt that in the infinitude of Real being all is well. Healing Spiritual All real Being is Mind; therefore the healing in Christian Science shows a removal of false beliefs which, externalized, evidence themselves either as diseases in the human body or as discordant conditions by the way of family relations, business difficulties, and world problems. Should the healing not readily follow the treatment, it might be well to ponder a statement made by Mrs. Eddy in "Retrospection and Introspection" (p. 54), "Sin and sickness must be deemed good, without hearing the fruits of Spirit, not having reached its Science." Let us look a little at beliefs. For the sake of simplification, the false beliefs assumed by or the person of thought may be divided into three groups. The first group belongs to life, the second to truth, and the third to health. So far as human sense is concerned, life belongs to the material body and is dependent upon it. Life is supposed to start with the birth of a material body and to end with its death. In Christian Science, this is recognized to be a misapprehension of life. In the light of Christ Jesus' declaration that to know God is eternal life, existence is identified with God. Indeed, the Christian Science textbook states (p. 468) that Life is a synonym for God. This being so, there is but one Life, inevitably the only Life expressed in man. Let us, then, think of life, not any more as pertaining to the finite frailities of a material entity, but as the infinite discernment of divine Principle itself. Again, truth is humanly regarded as connected with matter, which is accepted as real. Christian Science-the expression or embodiment of truth-reveals otherwise. The belief that matter is reality is fundamentally false and the cause of all human sorrow and discord. It is this false concept about that makes man believe he is a disciple's expression or embodiment of itself. St. Paul's statement colored in thought the way of for the fellow Christians in Corinth that they were "the temple of the living God." This temple or body is immortal, or divine. It begins with the true knowledge of eternal existence. It casts out mortal beliefs, and shows this divine knowledge as real existence, as body, to be spiritual. This is the regeneration to what is humanly considered to be body. Materialization is shown as the most disintegrating of all evil influences. One should remember that the limitations attached to a false concept will disappear as one allows one to experience more and more of the divine fact, and until one's embodiment of right ideas which one really is. According to human estimation, health is a state of the material body, which in a normal condition is believed to be just as natural as the abnormal state. What a surprise when one observes the origin of this word in its Anglo-Saxon derivation! Christian Science extends to us the real sense of health and leads one to identify health with the Creator. In the book of Job (33:13), Elihu asks, "Why dost thou strive against him? for he giveth not account of any of his matters." Let me be permitted to stress the word "all," because the understanding of oneself as including the entirety of right ideas has been so helpful in the discernment of one's true Being and in removing the persistent belief that the real sense or practical spiritual fact of one's enduring, unchanging health. Mortal Mind Myth The human mind's inevitable spiritual fact is the product of that which Christian Science calls mortal mind. "That which neither exists in Science nor can be recognized by the spiritual sense" is the textbook's disposal of mortal mind (p. 591). It can only be seen as the logical unfoldment of real existence. When the term "mortal mind" refers to the actual and existent, one may readily see there is "nothing claiming to be something" (ibid., p. 591). Then, all that is there to mortal mind is the term, and the term is a solocism at that! It is merely a myth, an assumption. Its supposed activity has been designated in Christian Science as animal magnetism or hypnotism. Animal magnetism or hypnotism attempts to operate through thought transference. Thought transference postulates the belief in two or more minds. In order to counteract animal magnetism, the first thing to be done is to refrain from believing that one has a mortal or human mind. A human mind implies mental manipulation. The recognition in Christian Science that one's true selfhood is the expression of the one infinite, all-inclusive divine Mind, is the basic understanding and declaration for proving the nothingness of animal magnetism. The one divine Mind need not be transferred, its infinite perfection, power, and presence are everywhere, and ever-present. This as to be acknowledged by way of identifying oneself with this Mind as the idea of Mind. Notwithstanding the claim that it is personal according to human appearance, all that is truly good is the divine Mind, and of that Mind, the one and only man, "the full representation of Mind" (ibid., p. 591). Whatever seems objectionable, and according to human appearance is vented in oneself or in others, is no person, no thing at all. It is nothing. Fear Analyzed Whenever a suggestion of fear claims to whisper or scream that it is very important, calmly affirm oneself the great liberating fact that the nature of fear are never directed against your real and only self. They are directed against an erroneous, mortal, personal concept of man. If you have mistakenly identified yourself with that erroneous concept, and are fearful, then you, you have sovereign divine power to annul this wrong identification. Moreover, you have sovereign ability to forestall a false suggestion, to turn it off before it becomes a wrong identification. Fear is so objectionable because, by giving in to it, you identify yourself with the very thing of which you are afraid. Hence, Job's well-known saying, "The thing which I greatly feared is come upon me." Of course, that which presents itself as a fearful mortal experience-suggesting that it includes and absorbs you-is nothing but a spurious, baseless, substanceless, lawless, powerless, mythical mental picture. It can only assert its supposed influence by claiming that it includes you. In accepting this suggestion, you would loss the dominating position bestowed upon you by divine idea. By permitting your mentality to be engulfed by this mortal concept of existence, you would seem to be made part of yourself as a person. Know, therefore, that God is all power, know that you have the ability, through the understanding of Christian Science, to exclude this falsity, or, better still, to preclude it on the basis of its nothingness; see there is a man is all-inclusive infinite Mind manifesting itself. Outside of which no reality exits. Evil claims to be something, but it is always in and of the world. In the mortal sense of existence, being merely a suggested absence of divine good, the so-called fact of the reality of evil is continually scourged by fear in different disguises. Historically it has been the fear that the world would come to an end. Particularly around the year 1000 A.D. this suggestion prevailed. It took a deep hold upon all Christendom; the Christian world in jitters. All normal existence was stopped. In the end. People sold, gave away, and squandered their possessions. Everything being mental, the millennium is a state of consciousness where there is no more identification with any form of error, and wherein there is complete identification with the divine-absolute science. One's real life, functioning contrary to its name, has really no connection with time. It is the understanding of Truth, divine Love; the "kingdom of heaven" which Christ Jesus proclaimed "is within you." It is always now and here for those who know oneself to realize it. And, by its very nature, real existence has to be infinity. It has nothing inside of itself that could alter it, and there is nothing outside of it. At other periods of human history that scourge of poverty by the fears of certain diseases, such as plague and smallpox. It appeared to overwhelm vast sections of mankind with disastrous results. Recently, the same mortal fear has assumed a different disguise, not from evils miliar to mankind but more gruesome and destructive than ever. That is the realm of that spurious belief. It not only claims to take away that which is desirable as personal property, but also threatens to wipe out everything that civilization and human liberties laboriously won in previous centuries. Hypnotism Exposed Hypnotism of the masses seems to be the medium through which evil would achieve this result: the tool for conquering and subjugating other nations. Spurious mental influences are marshaled to impress these masses with mental suggested ideas, as nausea. Hereby, freedom of thought is impaired and whole nations become victims, surrendering their mental independence and liberty. One of the methods used by those who believe in this mesmeric influence is propaganda. It may be remarked as an interesting instance of the prophetic and intuitive wisdom, that Mrs. Eddy stayed away from the use of propaganda altogether. The word "propaganda" is mentioned only once in all of her published writings. The sentence in which this word occurs is found on page 252 of Miscellany: "The only true ambition is to demonstrate Science and its pure monotheism-one God, one Christ, no propaganda." How human propaganda-it is essential to understand the spurious nature of it (The First Church of Christ, Scientist, and Miscellany, p. 252). One misunderstands grossly the nature of mortal mind to think of a human person realizing the truth among millions of people. It is the understanding that opens the mentality for propaganda and its fatal hypnotism. It is a spurious, merely a human method for obliterating the belief of mass hypnotism is insufficient from the start. The only thing it can do is to offer a countersuggestion. Naturally, that is not a healing and liberating process. It does not eradicate the false claim. Science Protective and Preventive The scientific way of eradicating-on the basis of evil's nothingness-has been explained by Mrs. Eddy in the following statement (No and Yes, p. 36): "The human Jesus had a resort to his higher self and relation to the Father, and there could find rest from unreal trials in the conscious reality and royalty of his being,-holding the mortal as unreal, and the divine as real." On the same page is further explained how "this retreat from mortal to spiritual selfhood" enabled the Master to triumph over every form of evil, death included. The understanding that one's true selfhood is divine idea, here and now, induces an entirely fearless attitude of trying and hoping to realize this fact in the future, makes Christian Science operative as the mighty preventive of everything untoward. One may readily see that a consciousness, which seemed for feasting to be a spiritual reality, in which a human sense of self found no place, is one's divine defense, natural, and only selfhood or existence. "Error is an animal consciousness, and has no power to destroy what God has created," as Science and Health explains (p. 521). In the case of disease, false suggestions are prevented from asserting themselves as one's experience. The writer of the epistle to the Hebrews declares that Jesus was "in all points tempted, yet without sin, for the divine Mind was in him." This means that whatever suggestions of mortal mind suggestions came to Jesus, as he clearly saw that every detection of such suggestions as being neither his body nor his thoughts, prevented them from having any physical or moral effect? His spiritual integrity remained intact. Church the Consciousness of Truth and Love Spiritual integrity makes it possible to understand more clearly the divine nature of all structure. Thus it is discerned that church primarily is a spiritual idea, ultimately to mean seen as a material building with accessories. When Peter recognized Christ Jesus' real nature, by declaring that he was the Christ, the Son (consciousness) of the living God," the Master inferred that that right idea, which Peter had voiced was the Rock, or spiritual foundation, whereon he would build his church (see Matthew 16:16-18). Mrs. Eddy defines "Church" in Science and Health (p. 583) as "the structure of Truth and Love; whatever rests upon and proceeds from divine Principle." This structure evidently is the Rock of which the Master spoke, and for that reason we can elucidate our spiritual sense of church by thinking of it as the consciousness of Truth and Love. This consciousness has never to rest upon and to proceed from divine Principle. And why is this so? Because it is not human thought grouping up to God. Hence derived wholly in and not naturally from divine, universal Principle, Love. It becomes possible to recognize that the whole array of mental suggestions, of warfare, miserable, fearful person to the agony of nations in a deadly struggle-is the most preposterous dream ever dreamt. Indeed, all there is to it is a supreme, illusive dream, of the father of all frauds-the devil, alias mortal mind. The way to help the world and bring liberation to one's human self is to stay out of the human, mortal, mesmeric dream by living church in all its spontaneous power and loving tenderness. Refuse to think of this as arduous or time-requiring. The joy and Science of real Being is ever-present. It is here and now for your instant acknowledgment and fruition. It means the realization of spiritual inclusion-including not only those right ideas of which the material body, the personal, and the national relations and conditions are the finite concept, but also those right ideas which doubt the spatial concept of the world and their relationships to the realm of divine idea. The Movement's Universal Scope The understanding and consequent embodying of the movement of divine Principle constitutes a vital part of one's qualifications for membership in The Mother Church, The First Church of Christ, Scientist, in Boston, Massachusetts, and in one of its numerous branch churches or societies throughout the world. With such a well-prepared and well-equipped membership, the Christian Science movement is bound to fulfill its mission. This mission is found set forth at the second paragraph sub voce "Church," on page 583 of Science and Health: "The spiritual attitude and altitude of thought by the part of the Christian Scientist is surely "elevating the race, rousing the dormant understanding from material beliefs to the apprehension of spiritual ideas and the demonstration of divine Science," however formidable mortal beliefs regarding church may seem to be. The mission of the church, and that means of course the mission of its members, consists in elevating that true understanding. It means the acknowledgment that all nations and nationalities shown forth by nations and races are, in their real nature, divine, as Mrs. Eddy has so well elucidated in man, who "reflects all whether or bad ideas from" (Miscellaneous Writings, p. 79). In this critical hour, America has a specific task to fulfill in the regeneration of the world, since it represents in a sense of the spiritual activity in Christian Science. Freedom is its hallmark. The United States of America is not just a territory bounded by borders of people. It is really a state of consciousness, and thereby a people. The fact that Christian Science was discovered here cannot be too strongly emphasized. It has a deep meaning which the world at large will better understand in the measure that Christian Scientists comprehend more fully their divine status. Freedom Spiritual It was in the United States of America that truth first found thought sufficiently free and receptible to announce real freedom. Freedom is not primarily political, but a spiritual mode of life. Man divinely self-governed shows forth true freedom. Organized evil can never obliterate man's individually self-governed destiny. Our work is to maintain this fact of individual self-government, and to be alertly aware that this is an essential element for the welfare of the human race. The human race is to help the human yield to the divine. Christian Science encourages humanity to do this. Christian Science shows that there need not be any nesitation in this yielding to real existence, and not fear that something of value will be lost in so doing. Science and Health assures us (p. 302), "It is impossible that man should lose aught that is real, when God is all and eternally his." The human is not a precious and necessary entity to be preserved as such; it is only a finite, imperfect, temporal, distorted sense of the divine. Whatever seems to be humanly commendable-spiritual, enjoyable, and right, is not human but the divine appearing, however faintly, in spite of the human; not through the human. The possession and enjoyment of the divine itself in the pursuit of being identified with it, is infinitely more satisfying, more practical, and worth while. Individual selfhood, as actually is, constitutes the most radiant, abundant, and joyous presence that one could ever have or be. When, in place of false belief-human intellectual view of a person-the understanding of real, spiritual individuality is gradually taken, mesmeric belief will readily disappear, and along with it will mortally mental belief, all that has to do with the limitation of the mortal concept. In this growth of understanding, it should become also possible for the Christ-Science of so-calling nations to show forth this nature of oneness. Mind's manifestation of itself as man, as idea, cannot be localized; the universe of right ideas-is a spiritual idea. Real individuality is localized, limited, dormant. It is as spiritual ideas-infinite, everywhere. When thought is poised as infinite consciousness, there is nothing too small for our notice, and no limits to our wide to come within the limitless scope of this spiritual realization. Summary In summarizing this lecture on Christian Science as the Science of Existence, the following may give a general idea of its trend of thought: In conformity with the Bible, the oneness and allness of God is accepted in Christian Science as the fundamental truth of existence, and thereby the nature of everything that exists-is determined. Mrs. Eddy's spirituality made her perceive that allness necessitates infinity, and eternality, and therefore cannot contain an element contrary to its own nature and perfection. Thus the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science dismissed the entire goodness of God. Divine allness being basic and true, whatever appears as contrary to God's nature-presented by material sense testimony-must be classified as baseless and false. God being all and thereby constituting all reality, the divine status of man is to be found, exclusively, as the knowledge or idea of God. The striking practical conclusion reached at this point is that man and true existence are virtually identical. In this understanding are infinite possibilities for redemption, health, prosperity, happiness. It enables one to be freed from every form of error through divine, supreme good. Divine power becomes available in the Christian Science treatment-the affirmation of Truth and the denial of error. It is divine activity, having nothing to do with human will power or suggestion. Christ Jesus was the great Exemplar of this divine activity, which is the eternal, ever-present Christ. His works, far from being miracles, were an exemplification of divine power. Liberation from every ill, healing, and redemption abound in the lives of Christian Scientists, demonstrating that they are not human or material. They are the fuller expression of God which seen already divinely is as real existence. Church, in mortal sense is the collective name used in Christian Science for church-its true-spiritual church-church has no divine or substantial existence. Since the one and only Mind is divine, human or mortal mind is a nonentity, a deception, a negation. The supposed activity of mortal mind is defined as animal magnetism or hypnotism, operated by a material sense of existence. It can have no effect on the one, who is aggressive nationalism, using mass hypnotism as one of its chief weapons in subduing nations. The only system actually able to deal successfully with the mesmeric from the beginning is Christian Science, through understanding that evil, though claim never can accomplish it, can never have power, the reality of evil and the plurality of man. In the realm of Christian Science, the United States of America is of supreme value for the whole world. This nation stands for the furtherance and protection of true freedom, exemplified by man divinely self-governed. The mission of Christian Science and the mission of the United States of America concur in this enlightened purpose. Existence is Science By fundamentally living this Science of Existence, the Christian Scientist is experiencing his divine selfhood-existence as it really is. Hereby he is benefiting humanity by spiritually expressing in everyday life the beauty of existence, its liberty, nobility, joy, its bounty, blessedness, and progressive unfoldment. As the Christian Science textbook (p. 497) so lucidly informs us, "The belief that existence is contingent on matter must be met and mastered by Science, before Life can be understood and harmony obtained." Thus, we are evermore vividly aware that our existence is Science, a divinely loving power and logical activity. We are privileged to go forth and live this Science of Existence, which has no other purpose than to bless. [Keep posted-read the Riviera]

Mandarin Orange Of Chinese Origin

According to all available accounts the mandarin oranges originated in Cochin, China, at an unknown date. From there they have been carried to many parts of the world. One of the varieties of this group is the Satsuma. There are several types of this variety. Some authorities say that the Satsuma is of Japanese origin. One variety that is the most common of this group is the Owari. (There is a province in Japan of the same name.) No complete history has been kept of these oranges. Many times they have appeared dat different places in the world with no explanation as to how they got there. It is known that they reached Europe at an early date, and they were introduced into England as early as 1817. They appeared on continental Europe about 1828. The cultivation of mandarin oranges in the vicinity of Genoa dates back to 1840. History states that the mandarin orange was introduced into India from Egypt in about 1805. It was mentioned from a second introduction in 1863. According to the best information available, the introduction of Chinese mandarin was brought to Louisiana by the Italian consul at New Orleans some time between 1840 and 1850. The introduction of the first mandarin orange from Louisiana into Florida is credited, by the committee of the Florida Fruit Growers' Association to Major Atway. The exact time of the introduction is not known, but it is believed to have been only a few years after the introduction into Louisiana. The Satsuma variety was introduced into Florida by George R. Hall in 1876, and again by Mrs. Van Valkenburg in 1878. At the present date Florida raises more Satsumas than any other state, possibly than all of them.

Defense Quiz

Q. When will the "Drive" to sell Defense Savings Bonds begin? A. There will be no "drive". Many people think of the Defense Savings Program as like the Liberty Loan campaigns of the first World War, where drives were for fixed periods to raise specific quotas. The Defense Savings Program is a long-range, continuing effort to stimulate the public to buy more and more Defense Bonds and Stamps month by month, and is essentially a program to promote mass saving, as well as to provide money for defense. Q. Are the Defense Savings Stamps sold at retail stores exchangeable for Defense Savings Bonds? A. Yes. They are the same as Stamps on sale at post offices. NOTE-To buy Defense Bonds and Stamps, go to the nearest post office, bank, or savings and loan association, or write to the Treasurer of the United States, Washington, D. C. Also Stamps now are on sale at retail stores.

CHILE AIR TRAFFIC GROWS

All records are being broken by Linea Aerea Nacional Chilena, the national airline of Chile, known as L. A. N. Reports for the first quarter of this year indicate a trend that-if continued through the year-would increase miles flown by 75 per cent, hours flown by 65 per cent over those of 1940, the total of passengers and passenger miles, increase freight by 30 per cent and mail by 12 per cent. Atlanta, Ga.-As a result of the war-salvage work of the Quartermasters Corps, millions of dollars' worth of unserviceable Army material has been turned back into usable property in the past year, and is expected to be sold as salvage to the eight southeastern states during the past two years, Lieutenant Colonel William F. Riter, deputy officer of the Fourth Corps Area Quartermaster office, announced today. In 1941, $1,526,488.78 was authorized for repair, alteration and renovation of clothing and equipage; in 1940 the funds for this work amounted to more than six million dollars. Much of the reclamation was done by the Quartermaster Corps and the remainder was done by private concerns. The OMC maintains clothing shops, wood shops, shoe shops and various other repair outfits," Col. Riter explained, adding that the funds saved many times that amount on new equipment. Among the irrepairable Army property, all of which was sold as salvage, were pistol belts, galvanised iron cans, stove pipes and grates, rags, pneumatic tires, felt hats, copper wire, brass parts, padlocks, combs, trunk lockers, canvas, blankets and tools. In 1941 at Fort Benning, 22,450 pounds of shoes, worn beyond repair, were sold as salvage; 175,000 pounds of scrap rubber, which could no longer be used; at Fort Oglethorpe, Ga., in 1940; 28,326 pounds of comforts were sold at Camp Beauregard, La. More than 6,000 pounds of aluminium, formerly used in canteens and other Army equipment, is now back in industrial use. Metals were found; nearly 10,000 pounds was sold by the Army in the past two years; and even used X-ray films brings in money to the Army through salvage operations; 70-films, weighing 612,210 pounds was sold at Fort Benning last summer.

War Effort Provides Boom for West Coast

San Jose (FNS)-America's war effort has proved a real boom to this quiet west coast community. Aside from manufacturing amphibian tanks and packing and canning equipment at the local plant of the Food Machinery Corporation, word was received this week from Washington that a contract had just been signed by the U. S. Department of Agriculture and Citrus Concentration, Inc., for the erection of a million dollar plant here for the processing of citrus juice. Citrus Concentrates, Inc., has been in operation here for about five years producing citrus concentrates. Established by B. C. Skinner, pioneer citrus operator, it has steadily increased its output of 200 gallons of citrus concentrate daily. The undertaking is part of the national war effort in providing citrus concentrates for its own forces and for Great Britain under the lend lease bill. For each box of concentrates produced it is necessary to use 18 boxes of fruit. The product is said to keep indefinitely and when mixed with 10 parts of water to one part concentrate tastes like fresh fruit. Indicated production for this season called for the use of about 1,500,000 boxes of fruit, which would be concentrated into 150 carloads. If transported in the raw product the whole fruit would fill 3,000 railroad cars. No hunting is permitted on the entire reservation of Camp Blanding either by soldiers or civilians.

EXHIBIT PLANNED

A trip to Florida on rotorama will be given visitors to the National Sportsmen's Show in Boston. It tells Florida's story most effectively and is being used by the Florida National Exhibits to encourage travel to this state.

ASK QUOTA INCREASE

Florida sugar growers can grow sugar cheaper than anywhere else in the country, and with the nation's supply cut down by the war from off-shore areas, this state should be permitted to materially increase its production. At least we should be allowed to grow enough for use in our own state.
