GOLFDOM'S GREATEST TO TEE OFF SUNDAY IN FOUR-BALL TOURNEY THIRTY-TWO TOPFLIGHT PROS WILL VIE FOR HONORS OVER MIAMI BILTMORE COURSE

Thirty-two of the nation's top-flight golf pros will tee off Sunday at the Miami Biltmore course in the 19th annual International Four Ball tournament, regarded as one of golf's greatest shows of the year. Ben Hogan of Hershey, Pa., and Gene Sarazen, the colorful veteran from Brookfield, Conn., will be defending titlists in the event. They will tee off against Johnny Farrell of Short Hills, N.J. and Henry Ransom of Philadelphia in the opening round. Ralph Guldahl of Rancho Santa Fee, Cal., and Sammy Snead of Hot Springs, Ark., winners in 1940, will meet Ky Laffoon of Chautauqua, N.Y. and Jimmy Demaret of Houston, Tex. in their first round. National Open Championship Craig Wood and Billy Burke, winners in 1939, tee off against Chandler Harper of Portsmouth, Va., and Herman Keiser of White Plains, N.Y. Other pairings include Byron Nelson and Henry Picard vs. Sam Byrd and Chick Harbert; Lawson Little and Jimmy Demaret vs. Ben Loving and Jack Grout; Paul Runyan and Horton Smith vs. Jimmy Hines and Willie Goggin; Clayton Heafner and Lloyd Mangrum vs. E. J. "Dutch" Harrison and Denny Shute. The alternates are Frank Walsh, capable assistant to Craig Wood at Tamiment club at Miami Beach; and Willie Klein. The Four-Ball is unique in that 32 of the nation's leading professionals are invited, paired into 16 teams, and go through an elimination process via the match play route. The matches are 36 holes, 18 in the morning and 18 in the afternoon, with the starting times 9 a.m. and 1:10 p.m. The purse for the event, under the sanction of the Professional Golfers' Association, is $5,000, of which $1,000 each goes to members of the winning team. Since the inception of the tournament back in 1924 when Macdonald Smith and "Wild Bill" Mehlhorn captured the title, only one team has won it more than once, Johnny Revolta and Henry Picard winning in 1935, 1936 and 1937. Both are in this year's event, but playing with different partners. Coral Gables' entries in the tournament will be Guldahl; Ben Loving, who is a guest professional at the Miami Biltmore who paired and Jimmy Demaret who has a home here. Ben, during the summer, is resident pro at Longmeadow, Mass. In the tournament he is paired with Jack Grout, while Revolta is teamed with Ky Laffoon. Sports writers and columnists from all over the country are expected to cover the match, spreading the fame of Coral Gables to a still greater. Elaborate preparations have been made to take care of the press by the Publicity Department of the Miami Biltmore, and news reel cameramen will also be on hand for the occasion.

Wardens for Sec. 3 Pct. 87 Organized

Organization of the air raid wardens for Section 3 of Precinct 87, was completed at a meeting this week, according to Walter T. Hill, section head. The wardens met Friday evening at temporary headquarters in the Troop 7 Scout cabin on the Granada Golf Course. Mayor Joe Whitley addressed the 27 wardens and assistants present, as did Precinct Warden Walter Wilson. The block wardens, introduced individually, reported that they had met with pledges of 100 per cent cooperation from the residents living in their blocks. Much of the meeting was devoted to a discussion of the duties of air raid wardens with particular attention being given to knowledge of terrain; resident types; occupation of persons skilled in first aid living in the district; listing of other persons, with details as to utility in civilian defense. The wardens also discussed duties during an alert, following an air raid warning and the handling of incendiary and high explosive bombs. Instruction in reporting of incidents; coordination with auxiliary units and problems in respect to deaf, blind and other handicapped persons was given. Attention was called to the fact that a plentiful supply of sand is available free of charge in the lot next to the fire station. The necessity of residents extinguishing fireplace fires before blackouts was stressed. A plan was developed for the covering of any blocks in the section in the event of the absence of any block warden. Section three is bounded by Milan and Coral Way on the North and South and Madrid and Granada on the West and East. Section Warden Hill lives at 1300 Sorolla Avenue, telephone number 4-6276.
