Rough straw makes a comeback this year. Here is an attractive forward tilted model in black worn by Songstress Marylin Duke. It is banded in candy pink coque feathers which swirl around to cup her right ear. This is one of those small hats you'll always find just right, whether it be for afternoon tea or after-theatre suppers. (From Braagaard.)

An adaptation of a Chinese lady's gown is one of CBS actress Betty Ruth ("Woman in White") Smith's favorite formals. This white satin model with pagoda-like shoulder treatment has ingenious lines. Notice how the one sleeve beaded in gold leaf design is offset by a diagonal row of fringed pins.

U-TALK By BARBARA BROWNE

By BARBARA BROWNE In awed excitement many U students and all of the new members of Sigma Chi hugged their radios at 10 o'clock Wednesday night when Glenn Miller serenaded the University of Miami in honor of the installation of the Sigma Chi Chapter here. "Drama Through the Ages" is the title, members of Theta Alpha Phi, honorary dramatics fraternity, have given to their Follies, to be presented April 11, in the Coral Gables Elementary School at 8 o'clock. The show will not be as serious at the title suggests, for the skits representing the periods in drama will be burlesqued. The Hurricane Chorus, made up of husky football players, will again perform as they have in every Follies. Twelve Wear Lead Slugs A lead slug hung by a ribbon around his neck told other U students that the wearer had been tapped for membership in Lead and Ink, honorary journalistic society. The twelve who were so adorned last week were Barbara Neblett, Lloyd Canter, Marshall Simmons, Evalyn Daniels, Helen Gwinn, Marvin Goldman, Thelma Hall, Ed Feigin, Hal Havre, and Manfred Berliner. Memberships were also given to Jack Kendall and Hal Leibman, who are now in the U. S. Army. Three more sororities initiated their pledges last week-end with the result that scores of girls arrived at the University of Miami Monday morning with bright smiles and brand new pins. New Chi Omegas were Dorothy Parmelee (model initiate), Betty Bratchi, Ann Butler, Jane Mack, Sue Ogdon, Pat Shannon, Mary Frances Heether, Lydia Hinnant, La Veryn Dannecke, Josephine Mool, Betty Frances Harlow, Betty Phillips, Ann Agatson and Barbara Browne. Those taken in by Zeta Tau Alpha were Genevieve O'Keefe, Mildred Andre, Emily Condon, Betty Jean Johnston, Joyce Rowe, Connie Scherr, Merle Blount, Mimi Stewart, Thelma Cox and Mary Ruth Hayes. Gwar Gableites Initiated Speaking of new initiates, some of the Gableites away at school have just become active members of their fraternities. Helene Zimmerman, Brenau College in Gainesville, Ga., is now an Alpha Delta Pi; Margie Loomis, Florida State College for Women in Tallahassee, was initiated into Delta Delta Delta; Susanne Bonner and Frances McGarry, also at Tally, are now members of Pi Beta Phi.

Diary of a Beauty Authority By HELENA RUBINSTEIN

By HELENA RUBINSTEIN (This week the famous beauty expert discusses a Beauty Time Table for women past the thirty-year mark. This column is presented as a special feature to the women readers of this paper.) NEW YORK—Busily engaged in defense work, occupied with taking care of a family, devoting her spare time to the Red Cross and the USO, the woman of today leads a life that is just as strenuous as, and probably even more tiring than, that of the wives of the pioneers who crossed the continent in covered wagons. Yet, though she may be exhausted at the end of her working day, the modern woman is expected to look radiant and glamorous at night and must adhere to a strict beauty routine so that she may retain a fresh, youthful appearance, although she may be thirty-five, forty, or even fifty years of age. With this in mind, I have drawn up a Beauty Time Table which is ideal for the woman who is past the thirty-year mark, but who is so busy that she does not have a great deal of time to spend on a beauty routine. However, it must be clearly understood that this program is effective only if followed faithfully. Beauty Time Table for the After-Thirties (Morning) 2 minutes posture—check-up. 1 minute—apply cream (wake up cream if skin is inclined to sallowness; pasteurized cream special if skin is dry)—leave on during bath. 5 minutes—bath or shower followed by rubdown with bodysmooth in cold weather, cologne and dusting powder in warm weather. 1 minute—remove remainder of cream and apply protective make-up film. 6 minutes—make-up and hair comb. (Before Evening Engagement) 5 minutes—refreshing tubbing and rubdown. 5 minutes—manipulation with rich face cream. 5 minutes—gala make-up. 5 minutes—gala make-up. 1 minute—application of fragrance. (During Day) 2 minutes—application of eye compresses with extrait (leave on while resting or at night). 15 minutes—stretching and spotreducing exercises (if an active sport or correct walking is indulged in, this may be cut down). (At Night Before Retiring) 1 minute — wash with beauty grains (two or three times a week). 2 minutes—cleanse-massage with pasteurized face cream. 2 minutes—apply chin astringent and pat in briskly (for neglected condition add another 2 minutes to use local stimulant and exercise). 3 to 5 minutes—manipulation with rich night cream (in the forties and fifties add another 5 minutes for face exercises). 5 minutes—hair brushing and hair setting. 30 seconds—apply nail oil on hands. 30 seconds—apply hand cream. (Occasionally) 30 minutes—20 minutes' herbal masque or salon beautilift masque treatment followed by 10 minutes' "gala make-up" before special occasion. 20 minutes—self-manicure and pedicure (once a week). 20 minutes—shampoo, scalp massage, application of corrective scalp preparations. 15 minutes—leg and underarm grooming (once a month). (Madame Rubinstein will be happy to solve your personal beauty problems for you. Simply address Helena Rubinstein, care of this paper.) Next: A Lesson in Make-up

Gay glen plaids in soft suit styles are the popular choice of many radio stars. Vera Barton wears one with the new shorter jacket. It features fabric buttons, club collar and slightly gored skirt. Her little sailor of red rough straw has a perky quill to give it height. (From Henri Bendel.)
