Gablesgrams

BY HELEN REYNOLDS With the closing of school this week, many families left at once for northern points, either for a few precious weeks' visit with relatives or to open summer homes, maybe for the last time until the war's end . . . Mrs. Harry Simpson and daughter, Ann, left yesterday for Dallas, Texas, and a visit with Mrs. Simpson's parents . . . Mr. and Mrs. C. J. White and sons, Bradford and Charles, leave tomorrow for Kennedyville, Md. . . . Mr. and Mrs. A. E. Harum and sons, Albert, Jr., and David Harum, will go to Brooklyn, N. Y., their former home. Mr. Harum will return at the end of two weeks . . . Mr. and Mrs. Robert Doddridge and sons, Bobby and Rodney, are entraining for Atlantic City . . . Mr. and Mrs. E. J. Ryan and four sons, Edward J., Jr., Timothy, and the twins, Pat and Mike, will leave this week for Cleveland and Akron, Ohio, their former home. One of the proudest fathers tonight at the Miami Senior High School graduation exercises will be Lieutenant-Commander Arthur H. Weiland, U. S. N., who will journey down from Jacksonville to see his daughter, Miss Johanna Weiland, an honor student, receive her degree. Johanna, the oldest of the four Weiland daughters, and she is only seventeen, will enter Duke University next fall . . . Another Coral Gables girl receiving her degree at Miami Senior High School tonight is Miss Patty Adams, daughter of Captain and Mrs. Marvin Adams, who plans to attend Stevens College, Columbia, Mo., next year. Miss Mary Louise Perry and Miss Ruth Alice Junkins have already put their degrees, received last night at Ponce de Leon High School, in mothballs. They're all in a flutter over the prospective trip to Annapolis, Md., come the seventeenth, to attend the June week dances at the Naval Academy. They'll be the guests of Louis Schirlis, of Portsmouth, N. H., and Bill Sprague of Chicago, Ill. Following the week's festivities, they'll be the guests at a house party at Sherwood Forest before going to New Hampshire for a visit. From the University of Alabama comes Miss Virginia Garth to visit her grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. J. Randolph Shaner of 2520 Country Club Prado. Miss Garth, who lives in Trenton, Ky., is a member of Kappa Kappa Gamma . . . Commander Charles Sutton of Guantanamo Bay is spending a few days' leave with Mrs. Sutton at Merrick Manor . . . Also at Merrick Manor are Miss Victor Mori and daughter, Miss Louise Mori, who came down from Madison, N. J., to see what summer was like in the tropics. Mrs. Alpheus R. Bascom, accompanied by her sister, Mrs. H. T. Herr of Miami, has returned to Coral Gables after a three-months' visit in Lamar, Mo., the Bascom former home. The Bascoms, who have bought the residence at 1215 Douglas Road, are newcomers. Mr. Bascom was a newspaper publisher in Kansas City . . . Mrs. S. Leroy Smith and her daughter, Miss Jean Kathryn Smith, are back in their Douglas Road home after a month at Cumberland, Md., with Dr. and Mrs. Rhett Rathbone, daughter and son-in-law of Mrs. Smith, and a week at Paris Island with Mrs. Smith's son, Lieutenant J. Raymond Smith, U. S. M. C. Interesting newcomers to Coral Gables are Mr. and Mrs. Fulger Attarian, who have leased the residence at 3810 Alhambra Court. They recently returned from New Caledonia Island, off the coast of Australia, and can tell many a tale of their four-months' trip over the open water making the perilous trip to the states. Mr. Attarian is with Pan American Airways. They have two attractive children, Marion, six, and Fulger, eight . . . Spending a "victors" vacation is what Mrs. Whitford Mayes calls her summer at the Mayes home, 2616 Country Club Prado. Here with her daughter, Eugenia, and son, Tommy, she expects Mr. Mayes from Washington early in July. Miss Elizabeth Ann Gingrich will arrive this week from the University of Wisconsin to spend the summer with her parents, Commander and Mrs. H. F. Gingrich, 426 Alhambra Circle . . . Captain John E. Whitbeck, U. S. C. C., and Mrs. Whitbeck are returning June 10 from Key West to reside at 419 Avenue Minorca. On Friday, the 12th of June, from 8 to 10 P. M., the members of the parish of St. Stephen's Episcopal Church will have an informal get-together at the parish house for Coral Gables and Coconut Grove friends to meet the new rector, the Rev. Rex Wilkes and Mrs. Wilkes. The Wilkes arrived this week from Chicago, where the Rev. Dr. Wilkes formerly had a parish. Architect C. Paul Nieder and Mrs. Nieder, 32 Avenue Calabria, have moved to Canary Island, Melbourne, where Mr. Nieder is engaged in government construction work. . . . Mrs. Irving Webb, known in the musical world as Edna Beach Webb, concert pianist, and her mother, Mrs. Minnie C. Beach, formerly of Toledo, Ohio, have bought the home at 222 Avenue Antiquera for their permanent home. Mrs. Webb's two sons are in Toledo doing defense work.

Spending the

week-end with her husband will be an innovation for Mrs. Robert Kenney, recent bride, who will arrive today from West Palm Beach for a wee visit with Staff Sergeant Kenney, now at the Officer Candidate Training School, Miami Beach. Mrs. Kenney will be the guest of her parents-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. O. H. P. Kenney, 110 Avenue Sidonia. The junior Kenneys were wed May 2 in West Palm Beach and almost on the day of the wedding the bridegroom was transferred to Miami Beach.

Mr. and Mrs. Linnemeier were also in Valdosta, Ga., May 20, to see their son receive his commission in the advanced flying school at Moody Field. He was a graduate of Ponce de Leon High School and received his bachelor of arts degree at the University of Michigan. He also studied at the University of Miami. The bride attended the University of North Carolina. The couple exchanged their vows in the Myers Park Methodist Church, with Dr. Embree H. Blackard officiating. LIEUTENANT GREBE OFF TO QUANTICO

Lieutenant Shelden C. Grebe, 141 Alhambra Circle, will leave Monday for Quantico, Va., and by great coincidence be in the same outfit with the Aviation Corps as he was during World War 1, when he enlisted as a private and worked up through the ranks to second lieutenant. Lieutenant Grebe was recently named commander of the Coral Gables Post No. 98, American Legion. Mrs. Grebe will join the Lieutenant during the summer.

Almost everyone likes a mystery — almost everyone enjoys the thrilling excitement of tracking down a criminal with an ace detective. But some are a little ashamed to admit reading mysteries. Well—you needn't be. Maybe you didn't know that many college professors bank presidents, great scientists, captains of industry, even the President of the United States all like their mysteries. In fact, millions of Americans are reading more mysteries today than ever before. Why? Mainly because these fast - paced, easy - reading stories are both relaxing and refreshing. It is for them—and for you—that we are publishing Ellery Queen's Mystery Magazine Edited by Ellery Queen, famous detective of the radio, the movies, and best - seller books, it is devoted exclusively to the best in detective crime short - story literature. And we mean literature. The fact that a story owes it plot to crime and detection need not prevent its being well written. Short detective fiction that is well written is not too readily available. But we are finding them—in books, in magazines, in the files of famous authors—and by arrangement with other publishers as well as with author, we reprint in the magazine the best detective fiction to be procured. Such masters as Dashiell Hammett, Agatha Christie, Stuart Palmer and Ellery Queen are to be found in it. But stories are selected on their merits, not on authors' names.
