CORAL GABLES CLUB CLUES

—BY GORDON TAYLOR A crowning triumph was scored by the theatre group of the club in their opening of "Outward Bound" last night. Talent, ability and understanding of the theatre were all displayed to the delight of the members that a club like ours can have anything its members desire. Tomorrow night, Wed. 5, will be the first New Member Night. Invitations have been sent to all of the new members of the last four months to join in at a table set aside in their honor so they may become acquainted. They will be especially pleased if you old-timers will stop by and introduce yourselves. Mrs. Checker Norman will act as hostess. Patrons we can get the chairmen of all the club activities to act as joint-hosts some night before the season is over. It is going to be the source of great enjoyment to our new members and the sooner they can indulge their interests the better. For instance, beginning Nov. 10 the lady golfers will begin play for the club championship. Mrs. William Redelsheimer is the defending champion and she is having the usual social membership and pay for this historic event. Of interest to all you club members who would like to qualify, just show up for qualifying, and you get green fees as you go. Chairman Ann Randolph is getting the prizes and arranging the tourneys now, so be sure and give her your name for entry. Mrs. Leonard A. Usina has accepted the chairmanship of the decorations committee for the dedication of the new Rickenbacker Causeway dinner dance to be held Monday, Nov. 10. Due to the honor and importance of this affair it was felt that a bang-up decorating job could be done by you members and any decorations you care to pass along will be in order. The Granada Room never sparkled with more hilarity in its history than last Saturday at the wedding reception given by members Mr. and Mrs. Geoff A. Miller in honor of their daughter, Caroline. The Halloween decorations spruced up the patio like magic, although I must admit that those gorgeous costumes did their witchery part. Member Ed Parkinson created much laughter with the greenery (including lettuce) used for decorating the palms of the costume winners. As green is the most popular color for decorations, I should mention how green with envy the group from Ft. Lauderdale was that came to the party in costume and spent their time raving about how good a time our members have. Their host, Herb Tuckerman, was red with pleasure. The replies on that double post card for names of you who are interested in participating in a CC of CG glee club are coming in pretty good. A chairman will soon be announced and before you know it, we'll be on the way toward having Xmas Carols sung by members, a barbershop quartette, and someday, a whizbang minstrel show. Billie (Fashion Show) Harting has so many splendid plans for a splendid occasion that I'm already dazzled. That first noon fashion show, Nov. 20, will tax our seating capacity so get your reservations in early. She's meeting with her fashion-minded committee this coming Friday. Ambitions: To have our menus patterned to fit every purse, with the room available to all members for all meals; to see hamburgers and steaks served after each dance night—and right on the patio; a formal party the night before Thanksgiving where all members will be in full dress (it's in the works); one night in Nov. '48 which will be called "The Banquet of Champions," where all prizes and ceremonies will be shown when presenting trophies to the winners of our club activities; and a real, honest-to-goodness art exhibit. Pleasing to see was the celebration by Mr. and Mrs. Dalton Wright of the 10th wedding anniversary on the club terrace; and ditto for Mr. and Mrs. E. S. Woodward for their 18th wedding anniversary last Saturday night. Tuesday, Nov. 4—Second performance of "Outward Bound," theatre production. One day voting machine. Contract bridge group, bridge room, 1:30 p.m. Kiwanis Club luncheon, civic room, 12:15 p.m. Wed., Nov. 5—Lions Club luncheon, room, 12:15 p.m. Mr. Leslie Coombs real estate meeting, 3 p.m., red room. Mrs. W. O. Strahler sponsors, 12:30 p.m. Fried chicken buffet, 7 to 9 p.m. Club dance, patio, 9 to 12 p.m. Thurs., Nov. 6 — Bridge group, bridge room, 1:30 p.m. Bridge group, bridge room, 8:30 p.m. Third performance "Outward Bound," 8:45 pm. Fri., Nov. 7—Sweet wedding reception, granada room, 9 p.m. Rotary Club luncheon, civic room, 12:15 p.m. Sat., Nov. 8—Club dance, patio, 9 to 1 a.m. Sun., Nov. 9—Dinner and dinner music, 6 to 9 p.m. Mon., Nov. 10—Members excluded from the facilities of the club at 5 p.m. for the dedication of Crandon Park and Rickenbacker Causeway. Reception and dinner dance.

Investment Firm Opens Office In Gables

O'Connor, Weller and Company, an investment securities firm, today announced the opening of Coral Gables offices at 248 Avenue Andalusia. "Is is our purpose to conduct a general securities business and to act as brokers on mortgage loans," said Bernard F. O'Connor, co-director with Arthur D. Weller of the new investment house. O'Connor stated that the firm will emphasize a service for small businessmen never before attempted in the Greater Miami area. Aid Small Business "We intend to act as an investment banking firm to aid small business enterprises in raising capital to finance expansion demanded by the rapid growth of Coral Gables," he explained. "In other words, we will serve as intermediary between local companies and local capital." The investment counselor pointed out that large investment banking houses provide this service for big business ventures but "no one has ever done it for the smaller firms, which actually need it more." Faith in Gables Decision to open offices in the Gables was prompted by "our great faith in the future of the city and by the sound if selfish business logic that there is more money per capita the year round in Coral Gables than in any other South Florida city," the partners said. O'Connor came to the Miami area in 1942 as general manager of the Cayuga Construction Company, which was engaged in building an Army air field in Cuba. Previously he had been associated with Wall Street brokerage and investment counsel houses for ten years. He served as economist in the Small Plants Division of the War Production Board in Washington during the early days of the war and was recently connected with A. M. Kidder and Company, members of the New York Stock Exchange in Miami. Weller was active in the advertising and sales promotion departments of paper firms in Wisconsin and Kentucky and later was associated with brokerage firms in his home town, Cincinnati, Ohio. After two years service as flight instructor at Camp Wolters, Texas, and other Army installations, he joined A. M. Kidder.

Mrs. Epperson Is Re-appointed Cancer Chief

Mrs. Clyde A. Epperson has been re-appointed Commander of the American Cancer Society's Field Army Organization in Dade County for the coming year and elected to the Board of Directors of the Florida Division for a three year period, Mrs. Malcolm Smith, Executive Director of the Florida Division announced today. Mrs. Epperson organized the local cancer unit five years ago when the word cancer was almost taboo in conversation. In these years she has led the fight in Dade County to reduce the number of needless deaths caused by cancer. The fight is based on a planned public Information Program directed locally by the commander and designed to acquaint the public with facts about the disease. The greatest weapon we have today in the fight against this dread disease is knowledge of the danger signals and early treatment by a reputable physician. Today the Dade County Unit maintains the Cancer Information Center at 804 NE 2nd Avenue.

Tuckerman Shines as Tom In CC's 'Outward Bound'

By ALBERT E. HARUM Herb Tuckerman went to sleep on Sunday evening as Herb Tuckerman, member of the Country Club Players. When he awakened yesterday morning he was Tom Prior "Outward Bound," and wondering whether he was dead or alive or somewhere in between. The puzzled state prevailed through last evening when Herb (or should we say Tom) made his debut at the CC of CG. What we mean to say is that Herb did a fine job with a difficult role in a difficult play before an audience accustomed more to comedy than tragedy. When we started to write this piece about "Outward Bound" we thought we might share the praise between Tuckerman and Sylvia Furlong—then we got to thinking that Mrs. Furlong is supposed to be good because she teaches things like voice and poise and the like. And she was. As the guilt-conscious Mrs. Cliveden Banks, Mrs. Furlong had her "stare-you-down" and "eut-them-deads" sparkling along on all eight cylinders. As a target for Mrs. Cliveden-Banks' barbs, Mrs. R. E. Nitzsche, in her role of Mrs. Midget, did a fine job of character portrayal. To the role of Scrubby, the man-about-the-ship who was "lost young", Walter Ashby brought a lackadaisical and peaceful treatment which almost made you wish you had died at a tender age, too. Jacqueline Pierce and Colin Drake gave life to the roles of Ann and Henry, the young couple with the "secret" every one aboard the eerie ship seemed to know, while Dr. Robert McVoy and H. C. Binns represented the clergy aboard and were convincing in their roles. Dr. Sidney G. Cassell gave his usual good performance, this time as Lingley of Lingley Ltd., to whom the idea of being dead was most ridiculous. The play is good entertainment and Dr. Norman Buchan's directorial efforts show clearly through the characterizations. If you haven't been it there's always tonight and Thursday!

Gables Response Urged by TB X-Ray at Sam's

The removal of the free X-ray unit from Coral Gables was threatened today unless more local citizens present themselves to have the anti-tuberculosis films taken. Commenting that Gableites contributed only 165 X-rays to the county total of 2,550 yesterday, Dr. T. E. Cato, Dade County health commissioner said that the local unit would have to be removed in two or three days unless the response quickened. The free X-rays are available from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily in Sam's Building, 206 Coral Way. The county total, through yesterday, stood at 16,814. Reports issued are confidential and the X-ray process takes only 30 seconds. It is not necessary to remove clothes.
