Sunch Ignorance!

Mr. and Mrs. Newrich were staying at an exclusive seaside hotel. One evening at dinner the conversation turned to music, with special reference to Mozart. "What a coincidence," said Mrs. Newrich. "Only this morning I saw him on the No. 5 bus with his wife; they were going to the beach." A curious silence followed for the rest of the meal. As soon as they were alone, her husband spoke to her. "I told you that when you don't know anything about what's being discussed you're to keep quiet." "But what did I say wrong?" queried his wife. "You've been here long enough to know," berated her husband, "that the No. 5 bus does not go to the beach."

TROUBLE-MAKER

The gentleman had sent for the plumber to fix an upstairs faucet, and as he and his wife started downstairs they met the plumber coming up. The gentleman said: "Before I go downstairs I would like to acquaint you with the cause of the trouble." The plumber politely removed his hat and murmured: "Pleased to meet you, ma'am."

LOTS OF PRACTICE

The elderly lady felt she was being cheated on the fare and was arguing with the driver. "Don't try to tell me, my good fellow," she declared loftily. "You know, I haven't been riding in taxis for ten years for nothing." "Maybe not," replied the taxi driver sarcastically, "but I'll bet it wasn't because you didn't try."

BEFORE HIS TIME

Foreman—Now, then, hurry up! Worker—All right, boss. But Rome wasn't built in a day. Foreman — Maybe not. But I wasn't foreman on that job.

NEEDED A MAP

Husband—Well, my dear, I have carried you safely over all the rough places of life, haven't I? Wife—Yes, and I don't think you missed any of them.

OPPORTUNITY BECKONS

During the course of dinner-table conversation recently, a three-year-old boy inadvertently mentioned that he had to stand in the corner at kindergarten that day. Questioning revealed that he had been punished for putting mud in a little girl's mouth. His mother, horrified, asked: "Why in the world would you put mud in a little girl's mouth?" Shrugging his shoulders, he answered very logically: "Well, it was open."

OUT OF TUNE

Wife—My husband is becoming quite a musician. Friend—What does he play? The piano? Wife—No, he goes out fit as a fiddle and comes home tight as a drum.

EVIDENTLY

"Good morning, Jimmy," said the neighbor to the small boy sweeping off the porch. "Is your mother in?" "Would I be doing this if she weren't?"

Top Of The SPORTS Wire State-Carolina Clash Family Affair

Raleigh, N. C., Nov. 6—(UP)—Mid-season necessity forced coach Beattie Feathers to switch his first-string fullback to the tail-back spot and the transfer already has paid off so well the North Carolina State mentor wishes he'd tried it sooner. Leslie (Footsie) Palmer took over the tailback post like he'd played it all his life and his triple-threat talents carry State's hopes for victory over North Carolina in their first postwar meeting Saturday. Except for ranking with the game's best puter, the 180-pounder from Cedar Grove, W. Va., was just another fullback two weeks ago. But when State was bumped 7-6 by underdog Florida, Feathers looked around for more offensive punch. He tagged the hard-running "Footsie" for the tailback role, and they went to work on his passing. With two weeks polish on his passing technique, Palmer looked like a natural when State trounced Chattanooga 21-0 last week. He tossed one touchdown pass, carried the running attack, and kicked all three extra points. Wolfpack hopes climbed again for a cherished win over favored North Carolina. Other conference battles pit William and Mary, still a strong title contender with its 21-0 win over Wake Forest, against VMI, South Carolina and The Citadel, and Clemson against Furman. Washington and Lee, tied with Duke for the conference lead, risks its perfect loop record against Virginia Tech, while Richmond plays Davidson with little at stake. Wake Forest goes north to meet Boston College n a battle of beef while surprising Maryland, with high-scoring Lu Gambino, plays Duquesne. George Washington, with six straight losses, will try for a win against the Kings Point (N.Y.) Merchant Marine.

my is a gal grappler. She and Catherine Simpson, of Atlanta, Ga., were mixing it up on the mat when the accident happened. The crowd roared approval. Tommy blushed and grabbed the loose ends. Catherine, like a good sport, said she was sorry. The wrestling bout resumed. But Tommy wasn't the same any more. A few moments later she was pinned down for the count.

Gulfstream Thoroughbred C To Total 100 This Week

Three carloads of horses have reached Gulfstream Park for the coming winter race meeting which opens December 1 and continues through January 15. It marks the first major shipment of the winter, and is the forerunner of many other express cars which will bring the local thoroughbred colony to more than 100 before the end of the week. Among the recent arrivals were 6 head consigned to J. J. Halley, 10 to the racing account of Joe Camac, a long-time Gulfstream Park regular, 8 owned by the Golden Shoe Farm of Mr. and Mrs. Stefan H. Zachar and 6 trained by L. V. Bellew, Jr. The Halley consignment included Transfran, Don Miller, Danny J, Valdina Math, Judge Davey and Arthur J, a consistent stable in the New England area, while Joe Camac unloaded the good distance runner, Naval Base, together with Portal, Croesus, Harpstrings, Run Lady, Kanace, Escort and others. In the locally-owned Golden Shoe Farm were several Florida breds, notably the successful Secret and the promising Bow Pen, the latter the first son of Mucho Gusto to reach the wars from South Florida. Hamilton, Dusty Ribbon, Black Brat, Louisiana Doe, Wont Wait and Ice Girl were bedded down at Gulfstream Park, and are to be joined later in the season by several yearlings shipped from the nearby breeding farm. L. V. Bellew is represented by Spring Thaw, Sanchilla, Some Sweep, Brown Ruin, Silver Sweep and Time Eternal. Probably the largest shipment to Gulfstream Park of the winter is already on the rails, spinning towards the Hallandale course. This is the 20-head stable trained by M. A. Buxton which is due at the siding within the next 24 hours. Buxton has always been high among the most successful trainers of the meeting, and has a formidable string with which to carry on during the 40 days of sport. His son, Merritt "Junior" Buxton, will come along to do the riding for the outfit. Balsa, one of the world's lightest woods, was named from the Spanish word meaning raft.
