PONCE NEWS Thirteen Students Selected To Vie For Scholarships
By DENIS O'DONOVAN and PAULINE MARKS Riviera-Times Correspondents "It's wonderful!" exclaimed Betty June Brown when informed today that she is one of the thirteen Ponce seniors chosen by their fellow students to take the Pepsi-Cola scholarship exam November 21. Betty's brother Donald won a Pepsi-Cola scholarship two years ago and is now an honor student at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Two students in Florida will receive full four-year scholarships, with living and traveling expenses. This seems a better way to spend money than "Trickle, trickle, trickle" jingles. Lucky Thirteen The lucky thirteen are Betty June, E. P. Ellis, Laurence Day, Joan Ditzenberger, Charles Rigi, Dave Foulis, Aubrey Kendall, Joan Greene, Doralys Arias, Betty George, Jimmy Renuart and (there must be some mistake!) Denis O'Donovan. Alternates are David Parker, Gerald Rock, and Anne Topping. One of the biggest undertakings of the Wheel Club this year will be the collecting of clothes and school supplies for children of Holland. All students are asked to contribute to this drive. Wheel Clubber's held their rummage sale Saturday afternoon. One of the great difficulties encountered in filming motion pictures underwater at Silver Springs, Florida, was finding actors and actresses who could not only swim gracefully, but who could smile and maintain natural facial expressions underwater.
That night the members met at Baker's Haulover for a beach party. Debaters Win Honor According to a letter just received from the Rostrum, official National Forensic League magazine, Ponce's N.F.L. has been awarded the Leading Chapter Award for the Florida district for this year. An illustrated story about Ponce's debaters will appear in a future issue of the Rostrum. Marilyn Hahn was crowned Hi-Y sweetheart at the second annual Hi-Y Sweetheart dance held last night at the Ponce gym. Shirley Black was runner-up. Gene Lockheart's band supplied the music and Betty Lou Pullman gave out with the vocals. T. C. Slack played one of his specialty piano numbers entitled "When It's Sweet Onion Time in Bermuda." Volleyballers Win Ponce's freshman volleyball team copped third place in the tournament held last Friday at Shenandoah Junior High. Beating Miami Beach, they then faced the Edison Raiders and lost. In their next game they lost to Shenandoah, who placed first. Edison was second and Ponce third. During the halves of the Ponce-Jackson game, the Ponce Cavalettes donned football jerseys and held their own private football game. Forming two circles the girls limbered up with exercises. They then formed a "T" formation and waited while Betty Lou Pullman, acting as the "official" walk-ed out on the field with the aid of a cane and dark glasses, and laid the ball on the line of scrimmage. At the sound of the whistle, everyone rushed forward and tackled someone on the opposing team. The only person left standing was Laura Copeland, who carried the ball under her jersey and made the touchdown. Head drum-majorette, Pat Harshbarger, became quite angry during the band drill between the halves. When Pat would march in one direction, the band would go in the opposite one. Finally getting disgusted, Pat flung down her baton and triumphantly led the Ponce band off the field.
Unique Cypress Residence Built in Schenley Park
By PEGGY GORDON Riviera-Times Correspondent Our curiosity was finally satisfied the other day when we found out who owned one of the most unusual appearing homes in Schenley Park. The all over paneled house made completely of tide water red cypress lumber located at 5757 Luneta Avenue is owned by Mr. and Mrs. D. E. Everett who moved into their new home just two months ago. Mr. Everett very generously informed us of the different types of cypress used in building. The exterior has a pecky cypress finish, the strongest and finest, and the interior throughout the rambling ranch cottage is paneled with first and second grade cypress. This North Florida lumber has only 17 more years of cutting before it will be virtually extinct. Mr. Everett explaining the durability of the wood by saying it is stronger than cement block and would outlive us. The fact that six ministers had a hand in the actual construction would certainly make it seem as though there were added blessings strengthening its rafters! Home Again Despite the fact that before his enlistment for a year's training in the U. S. Army, Michael, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Jim S. Merrihew, 2716 S. W. 57th Court, had snakes for one of his pet hobbies they are more than happy to have him home again! It must have been rather an empty porch to have come home to after having had twenty-five cages with various kinds of snakes in them. And according to Mrs. Merrihew, Michael's pete would always regard their master's wishes in remaining behind bars! Just as the Merrihews were settling down for a party game one evening, Michael announced upon leaving that one of his pets had gotten loose and he would appreciate it if they noticed it around and would put it back in the cage. At least the party wasn't the usual polite success! Of course Mike will be on to newer hobbies now after his vast experience in the last year which took him as far away as Japan and joining his dad in the surgical and medical supply business probably won't leave as much time for snakes. Mr. and Mrs. Jack Kelley, 5772 S. W. 30th Street, have returned this last week to their four children" after a refreshing jaunt to Lake Kerr, Florida, where Mr. Kelley's family have a camp which gave ample opportunity for some of their favorite sports, fishing, swimming and hunting. Party Since getting her husband, Professor W. H. Steinback, 5881 S. W. 31st Street, head of the chemistry department at the University of Miami, back on his feet after a four-day siege of the flu, Mrs. Steinback was able to entertain at a combination party which not only included a demonstration of household goods by Mrs. Lillian Connally, but also a perfectly lovely bridge luncheon. Mrs. David Bronson was the honoree. Among the other guests were Mrs. D. H. Cook, Mrs. Carl Tedan, Mrs. Floyd Wright, Mrs. Warren Canady, Mrs. J. L. McCord, Mrs. Charles Stoker, Mrs. H. C. Witte, Mrs. Julian Corrington, Mrs. Ralph Murray, Mrs. Robert Whitehouse. Arrival Billy and Bruce Qualye, together with their mother and daddy, Mr. and Mrs. William Quayle, 5756 S. W. 31st Street, are elated over the arrival of Mr. Quayle's mother, Mrs. Ethel Quayle of Chicago for an extended visit. Dr. S. Hill Gordon, 5747 S. W. 31st Street, has returned from the Florida State Dental meeting at St. Petersburg, Fla., where he gave a clinic on operative procedures in dental surgery.
The ancient Chinese used to ripen hard pears by putting them in a closed room with burning incense. Ethylene gas in the incense smoke caused the ripening, and today that gas is used to de-green fruits.
JIMMY DURANTE and FRANK SINATRA drink a toast to the future in a rollicking moment from "It Happened in Brooklyn," happy go lucky musical playing for the last time at the Gables Theatre tonight.
Students Will Compete Contest
Art minded youngsters in Coral Gables schools will get a chance this fall to compete in a state-wide contest designed to utilize the creative talents of youth in the interests of better vision, according to plans announced by Dr. Louis J. Colman, Director, Prevention of Blindness Division of the Florida Council for the Blind. School students' posters depicting the theme of the eye health and safety may be entered in the state contest if received at Tampa by December 1, it was stated. In addition to numerous prizes, the championship poster will be published by the Council for distribution during next spring's annual Sight Conservation Week. Details of the contest have been sent to all school superintendents and principals.
