Free America to Hialeah as Calumet Concentrates on Florida Season
Trainer H. A. (Jimmy) Jones of Calumet Farm arrived Wednesday at Hialeah with two important announcements relative to the operation of the stable. "First of all", said Jones, "Calumet Farm will concentrate its racing in Florida during the winter. Secondly, we are bringing down Free America to Hialeah instead of keeping him on the farm until spring as originally planned." The first statement was to spike reports that Calumet would campaign divisions on both coasts this season. "We may decide to send a horse or two to California for the big stakes if the occasion arises," continued Jones. "But this winter I'd want a little more time." Jones evidently was referring to Armed's flying trip to Santa Anita last winter to run in the handicap a week after winning the Widener. There was only a week between the races. "Flying Easier On Horses" "I'm not looking for any excuses for Armed," explained Jones, "But I believe we would have a better chance in the future if we been a few more days to get used to local conditions. I still think that flying horses over a long distance is the most sensible way to travel. It's easier on a horse than a rail shipment between here and Jacksonville or even vanning one between two tracks in the same area." Calumet's decision to place Free America back in training at Hialeah gives them a powerful probable Kentucky Derby field. Bewitch, Citation and Whirl Some won 13 stakes this year, and Free America also accounted for a pair before being fired and sent to the farm. Reports from Lexington are that Free America is in splendid shape. He will be shipped down early next week with 21 yearlings and several older horses. Fine Fettle, Spirit, Wright Angle, High Shine, Great and Sunny Boo are the older performers which will accompany Free America. Jones spent his first morning at Hialeah examining the 25 Calumet horses already here for signs of injury that might have occurred in shipping. A close examination proved that all had arrived in good condition. At the end of the Pimlico meeting Calumet's 1947 money winning record of close to $1,400,000 more than doubled their 1944 mark of $601,660. This was the fifth time in the last seven years that Calumet led the field. Osage orange is the only native wood that furnishes a dye in commercial quantities. In color it ranges from yellow to golden brown and is used in dyeing leather as well as textiles.
