Century Club Opens 20th Season on Thanksgiving

Members Plan Cocktail Parties To Precede Buffet-Dance At Country Club Thursday

The Century Club of Coral Gables will open its 1947-48 season officially Thursday evening at a Thanksgiving dance and buffet that has become a tradition with members. Old friends—many of them pioneer Gablettes—will meet for the first time after Summer travels, at the formal event scheduled to get under way at nine o'clock at the Country Club of Coral Gables. The dance will be preceded by a number of cocktail parties given by Century Club members for fellow members, their wives, and their guests. One of the larger early evening social gatherings will be the cocktail party being presented by Mr. and Mrs. S. Earle Giffin at their home, 1008 Alhambra Circle. Among the 80 guests invited to the Giffin home are Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Baker, who are en route from St. Louis, Mo. to attend festivities that will open the season's calendar for one of Coral Gables' oldest and most distinguished organizations. Other guests will be Mr. and Mrs. Edwin Klassy, Mr. and Mrs. George Corrigan, Mr. and Mrs. David Giffen, Mr. and Mrs. Lem Stevens, Mr. and Mrs. Paul E. Lindblad, Mr. and Mrs. Dickie Oglesby, Mr. and Mrs. W. C. Atkins, Mr. W. Guy Finn, Mrs. Edith Dreesbach Rowe, Richard Massey and Collin Hurst.

Cartees Entertain

Dr. and Mrs. Horace L. Cartee will entertain for a group of friends at their home at 6619 Granada Boulevard. Their guests will include Mr. and Mrs. Hiram Blakey, Dr. and Mrs. S. F. Elder, Mr. and Mrs. Philip Head, Mr. and Mrs. Dewey Knight, Dr. and Mrs. E. C. Lunsford, Dr. and Mrs. Norton McKenzie, and Mr. and Mrs. B. Eugene Wallace. Among the out-of-town visitors who will be guests of Dr. and Mrs. William P. Diamukes for pre-dance cocktails are Maj. W. C. Esterline, U.S. Marine Corps, and Mrs. Esterline, of Barstow, California. Others bid to the Diamukes home at 3638 Harlano Street are the Thornton M. Finchers, Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Curtis, and Dr. and Mrs. Bowman F. Ashe. President of the Century Club Roy Page and Mrs. Page will head the receiving line at the homecoming party. With them to greet guests will be Mr. Fincher, immediate past president, and his wife; Mr. and Mrs. H. Lloyd Williams; Mr. and Mrs. William C. Blakey; and Judge Norman Hendry and Mrs. Hendry.

Church Group Announce Program

In order to make way for Thanksgiving festivities, the Mary Elizabeths Guild of the Coral Gables Congregational Church will shift its meeting date this week. Members will gather Friday morning at ten o'clock at the church, 3010 De Soto Blvd., to complete sewing for a Christmas Bazaar. The bazaar will be held at the church during the afternoon and evening of December 3rd. "The Life of Lottie Moon," by Euna Roberts Lawrence will be reviewed Friday at a meeting of the WMU of the University Baptist Church. Mrs. Burt Johnson will describe and evaluate the book for fellow members at the general meeting to be held in the church hall at 10 a.m.

Legion Women Plan Party

The Auxiliary of American Legion Post 98, Coral Gables, will hold its regular meeting tomorrow evening at 8 at the Legion hall. Final plans will be completed for the Christmas party for members and their children, which will be an event of Dec. 10th. Junior members will assist in arrangement for the Yuletide party.

Won't Be Home ('TIL CHRISTMAS)

Guess what? There are three local girls attending the Florida State University who AREN'T coming home for Thanksgiving. Seems as though just about all of the local FSU students are coming home for this special occasion but Felicia Wells, Martha Bentz, and Edith Ann Bate are gonna be different. Tomorrow they'll board a train for Dothan, Alabama where they will be guests of a mutual friend, Katherine Jones, who attends the University of Alabama. Numerous parties have been planned for the girls while they are in Dothan. Felicia is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. C. C. Wells, 1402 Country Club Prado. Martha, whose address is 1021 Hardee Road, is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. O. G. Bentz. Edith Ann belongs to the A. H. Bate of 228 S. W. 22nd Road.

UPSWEPTS WILL BE ON THE UPSWING WHEN KATHY SERRA BECOMES TWO

Upswepts will be on the upswing tomorrow afternoon when Miss Kathy Serra, aged exactly two, takes her place at the head of a table for 11 at the Country Club of Coral Gables. As part of Kathy's birthday celebration, Mrs. M. L. Ebelmesser will escort the honored lady and her feminine guests to Josef's for wholesale hairstyling of eight curly young heads, just before the party. The coiffure designer does not plan to neglect the three young gentlemen, Doug Stoddard, Billy Bolick and Gregory Kruels, who have been bid to the festivities. "We'll give them haircuts," he advised. At the Country Club, the 11 two-and-three-year-olds will take their places at a table marked by Humpty-Dumpty favors, flowers, and a huge birthday cake. Junior set guests at the cake-and-ice cream feast will also include Beth and Kathy Lacer, Vickie Newman, Ann Hall, Babs Blakely, Lana Ropes, and Jan Arnold. The party honoring young Miss Serra, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Serra Jr., is being given by Mrs. Ebelmesser.

Special Guests Feted by Poetry Society

Special guests at the first meeting of the Poetry Society of Great Britain and America held at the home of the new president, Mrs. Cleland Davis, were Mrs. Edwin Barker, president of the Miami Branch, National League American Pen Women; Mrs. Olive Zipperer, of Jacksonville, and Ernest Baker of the Department of Political Science, Yale University. Mr. Baker is on his way to Havana to attend the United Nations Trade Conference. Marie Tello Phillips gave a talk on current popular poetry and increased the interest advantage of short poems. Miss Philips had two poems published this summer, "Aunt Ella Makes the Headlines" and "Love Again". Howard Dachlager included "Waltz Brilliant" by Mannn Zucca and "Black Key Etude" by Chopin in his piano group; Mrs. Walker Gibson sang "Only Tonight" and "Your Quest" by Miss Phillips.

Up-State Guests Arrive for Brice-Marley Rites

Out-of-town guests from Jacksonville are arriving to attend the marriage Thursday of Miss Marjorie Alice Brice of Coral Gables and Thomas Charles Marley of Jacksonville which will take place at 7 p. m. at the Coral Gables Methodist Church. Mr. and Mrs. Francis Brice, parents of the bride-elect will be hosts Wednesday night at a rehearsal dinner at the San Juan Restaurant. About 21 will attend. Miss Brice has chosen her sister, Mrs. Harry William Craft, nee Erleen Brice, as her matron-of-honor. Miss Louise Ray and Miss Mary Ann Marley, sister of the bridegroom-to-be of Jacksonville will be bridesmaids while Carolyn Craft will serve as flower girl. James Dunaway will be best man and ushers include Mr. Marley's brother Robert Marley, and Ross Clark, who recently returned from service in the U.S. Merchant Marine. Mrs. Dorsey Willoughby will be at the organ while violinist for the ceremony will be Mrs. Robert Wolf. Both are Gables musicians.

Italian-American Officers Installed

The Antilla Hotel dining room was the scene today of the annual luncheon of the Italian-American Woman's Club. Installation of new officers was conducted and retiring officers honored. Mrs. Caesar LaMonaca was installed as president; Mrs. Michael Fascell, vice-president; Mrs. Joseph Guida, secretary; Mrs. Peter Guiotti, treasurer; Mrs. J. R. Rise, sergeant-of-arms; and Mrs. J. M. DeGaetani, board chairman. Directors who were officially seated were Mrs. C. A. Fascell, Mrs. Charles Mercurio and Mrs. Carmeline Carnevale. Mrs. Augustine Sansone served as installing officer.

Business Girls Dine On Turkey Tonight

The Business and Professional Girls Club of the Young Women's Christian Association, member agency of the Dade County Community Chest, will have a Thanksgiving dinner at 6:15 p. m. tonight at the club. A panel "Common Problems of the Young Worker" will be the program with girls from the YWCA, Barry College and University of Miami participating.

Miss Skogstad Host At C. E. Festivities

Turkeys, Puritans, and a big horn of plenty will comprise the decorations which will be used tomorrow night at a Thanksgiving dance being given for the Christian Endeavor group of Westminster Fellowship of the First Presbyterian church of Coral Gables. Beginning at 8 p. m., guests will assemble at the home of Katherine Skogstad, 2716 Granada Blvd., for the dance. Margaret Miller is in charge of the dance, while Dorothy Knight is refreshments chairman.

It's A Co-Ed!

Dean J. Ralph Murray of the University of Miami was shopping for a green "beanie" for a prospective frosh—class of 1969. She is Ann Elaine Murray, and tipped the scales at eight pounds eight ounces when she made her debut Saturday at the Coral Gables Hospital. The future co-ed and her mother are getting along nicely and expect to be home at 624 Avenue Flavia early next week.

St. Joseph's Villa Auxiliary of Miami will sponsor a card and games party at Gesu Center on Tuesday, Dec. 2nd, Mrs. William V. Delahunt announced today. Proceeds from the affair will finance Christmas gifts and celebrations for children under the care of Sister Mary Regina at the Villa.

MAYFLOWER DESCENDANTS TO ELECT

Coral Gables members of the Elder William Brewster Colony of the Society of Mayflower Descendants will join other members in the area for the annual meeting and luncheon at 12:30 p. m. Friday at the McAllister Hotel. Lt. Governor Guy Worthington Ellis will conduct the election. Roland Mather Hooker will present the slate prepared by the nominating committee including Mrs. Alfred S. Peberdy, chairman and Mrs. Alfred C. Andrews. During the afternoon session a handsome American Flag with eagle mounted staff will be presented to the society by Mr. Hooker, who is color guard in the Florida society as well as in the local colony. Among the seven new members of the colony recently named is Mrs. H. F. Machlan, of Coral Gables. Miss Millicent Mattocks, 511 Avenue Cadima, is taking reservations for the luncheon.

Gables Residents Home From Trip

Mr. and Mrs. Michael Mocosky of 3100 SW 25th Strect have returned after an extended trip North, during which they visited 17 of the Eastern Seaboard states. They also visited in Detroit, Windsor, Canada and New Orleans. Mr. and Mrs. Mocosky sold their furniture store, the Century Furniture, just before taking the trip. Mrs. Esther Tarnopol owner of Kiddie Land Shop on Miracle Mile, left Tuesday for Chicago, Ill., to spend Thanksgiving with her son George who recently was discharged from the Army after serving 15 months, 11 of them overseas. George will enter the Illinois Institute of Technology after the Thanksgiving holiday. Mrs. Tarnopol will be away one week.

In honor of Mr. and Mrs. Graham Miller, a cocktail party will be given from 5 until 7 o'clock today by Dr. and Mrs. Arthur H. Weiland at their home on 1104 Avenue Malaga.
