SCORE CARD CORAL GABLES- Players Hit Jackpot 'Tho 'Canes Get Jeers
By DON CUDDY Despite the Hurricane's dismal season, the trophies and other honors to individual players have reached an all-time high this season. Taylors Sports Shop will award its tenth game captain this week, and outstanding lineman and back-of-the-week presents recently have gone to George Cimine (twice and second two selections as far for his aggressive guard play), Ernie Settembre, Ed Hauck, and Bob Sutter. Bob Bowman has captured the backfield award most consistently. * * * Another Award On the Line Now another award is on the line, this one a two-footer, bearing the figure of a football player, to be presented to the high scored for this season through the courtesy of the Nettleton Shoe Store on Miami Beach. It will be given to the high point man at the annual gridiron banquet sometime next month. Right now, Harry Ghaul is out in front with two TD's and bonus F-A-T's against Baylor, Villanova, George Washington (4) and Cincinnati. * * * Need Proxy Ballots For Ed Hauck If you have any doubts about who should get radio station WBAY's award for the outstanding Hurricane player of the year ... kindly give me your proxy ballot for Ed Hauck. Statistics on his contributions are hard to keep, but I'd say conservatively that he's been in there for an average of a good 50 minutes per game. That itself doesn't rate any raves, nor has he figured in the scoring columns, but the way he turns the interference when the opposition gambols around his side of the line does. Florida was the first team this year to dump Ed on the seat of his pants—and they managed that just once—with three blockers working on him and all of them being stopped right there. The opposition is making what yardage it does off tackle and around that flank because the secondary doesn't come up fast enough to close the gap. * * * Contact Lenses Aid Players Contact lenses have been invaluable to basketball players for many years and now they're starting to figure in the football picture, too. When Ed Sullivan, sophomore reserve back on the Hurricanes becomes a successful ball-toter for Miami (something to expect next season with Injaychock and Bowman making their final appearance this week), a Miami Beach optometrist wants part of the credit. The Pittsburgh wingback (a Silver Star vet of the Normandy blow-off, by the way) is near-sighted and had visual difficulties in play. Trainer Dave Wike contacted the Quarterbacks' Club, who in turn made arrangements to get a fitting for the unbreakable contacts from Dr. S. G. Schneider, Lincoln Road optometrist. * * * Comes An Unusual Beef The Gators didn't do the Hurricane squad any favors last year by placing their bench directly in the path of the sun at Gainesville, but two wrongs do not make a right. And it was strictly small time to shunt the visitors off to the nickel (whoops) seats for the game. End of beef.
Riddlers Lift Cage Lid Tonight | Meet Edison J. C. Of Fort Myers On Raiders Court
Riddle Inter-American College's first "formal" cage team gets a double barreled assignment when they meet Thomas Edison Junior College's quintet from Fort Meyers in a game set for the Miami Edison High School gymnasium at 8 p.m. tonight. Either end of the detail may prove too much for the speedy, height-endowed but inexperienced varsity. First, they raise the curtain on the local basketball scene, beating prep schools in the vicinity and the University of Miami to the draw by a week or more. "Out to 'Clean Up" Secondly, it will be the first opportunity in the 24-game schedule to justify Coach Leo Boles' confidence that his squad will "clean up" the junior college's in the southeast this campaign and be ready for bigger game at the Coliseum next year. Little is known of the visiting school's potentials, since this game is also their baptism into the collegiate basketball picture. Coach Lee W. Fox announced this morning that he will bring an even dozen players for the contest. Four-seven Start-ers Boles lists men three-deep in every position for the lid-buster. The Riddle quintet is expected to display the same fast-breaking style of play which the former Miami Beach High school coach used to lead the Typhoons to the state scholastic championship two years ago. Figuring prominently in the Riddle line-up will be nine former high school cagers from the Miami area. Key man of this group is probably Rocky McDonald, former Edison Red Raider captain and center in the double-pivot pattern Boles has been developing. Local Boys Start Boles named his starting line-up this morning, selecting four Miami Edison cagers and one Stingaree for the tap-off. Bill Godwin and Lee Benjamin will be at forwards, Marky McDonald will start at center, and Bill Zimmerman and Avron Bryan will check the back-court. Zimmerman is the Miami High nominee to the first string. Ophelia, Hollendale Matched In Biscayne's 'Hot Box' Ninth
Four of the first-division routers against a quartet which has advanced to higher rating, have been matched for tonight's featured ninth race at the Biscayne Kennel club. This top four will be composed of Ophelia, a two-time winner; Hollendale, another double victor; Flamingo, one of the East's best summer top racers and Dry Lake, a beaten favorite which appears ready for his best. Against them will be, Lucky Ally, always a serious threat; Thunderbird, Perky and Jolly Jewess. At 5/16 mile, the winner promises to have to race in 32 seconds or less to be in command at the finish. Three seasonal first-starters in the first race first-half of the Daily Double, Forevermine in the second and Bowman in the fourth are the ones making their debut for this meeting. Many favorites are listed in the two fields comprising the fifth and tenth races over the marathon Biscayne course
SPORTS PARADE | By OSCAR FRALEY UP Sports Writer
NEW YORK, Nov. 25. (UP)—A woman needs a great sense of humor to be a wife and if you don't believe it take the case of Mrs. Jimmy Conzelman. James, the master of the house, is a fottball coach. His club is the Chicago Cardinals, one of the nation's top teams with a "dream" backfield composed of Paul Christman, Charley Trippi, Marshall Goldberg and Pat Harder. If you know football you realized that "dream" tag is true and one which spells "nightmare" for rival clubs. But Jimmy has had trouble keeping his backfield together because of injuries, colds and what not. When he does have the unit it rains and spoils the going. At the moment the Cards are tied with the Chicago Bears for the western division leadership in the National League. So you can understand that Jimmy of the shaggy, iron-gray hairs wants no rain. That's where Mrs. Conzelman's troubles begin. If you don't think so, listen to Jimmy. "There is no place for levity in the life of a coach," Jimmy states. "You naturally are pessimistic and naturally don't want hilarity in the house on the day of a game. "I get up about 6 a.m. and start looking for rain clouds. I fear rain and I see a little cloud way off and I saw to my wife: "'It's going to rain.' "'But it's eight hours 'til game time,' she'll say. "'That makes me mad. So I say: "'Oh, crossing me, eh?' "'I don't like her disagreeing with me, see. Well, by half time it's really raining and when we go off the field I look up at her (Please Turn to Page Seven)
Beckman Calls Municipal Loop Meeting at Center
With the first night's play in the Municipal Basketball league exactly a week away, Ed Beckman, director of the War Memorial Youth Center which is sponsoring the organization, called for a meeting tonight of all managers of the eight squads which will participate in the seven-week series of games. Tonight's meeting will be for the purpose of selecting officials and determining eligibility and other rules for the loop. All games are to be played at the J. P. Riddle gymnasium in the Colonnade Building with triple headers listed for Tuesday and Thursday nights. Listed on the roster of teams entered in the league are: Carl's Liquors, Friendly Bar, Elks' Club, Tiny Pick Shop, Delicate Franks, St. Theresa, Eastern Air Lines and the Naval Air Station.
