Gables Student, 10, Asks Santa Save Missing Brother

(Continued from Page One) tover waited in vain for the plane to land. It has never been found. Still Hold Hope The 21-year-old regular Army man had been expected home for this year's holidays. His little brother had been only eight years old when Sergeant Copeland was last in the United States in 1945. The sergeant had a 60-day re-enlistment leave then, and following that two months with his family he returned to Europe to supervise the discharging of other soldiers. His mother hasn't given up hope for her son. "I'm just trying to go on like he was going to be home for Christmas the way we planned."

PARADE Marchers to Present Fiesta del Sol

(Continued from Page One) circle, south of Coral Way and proceed north on Ponce de Leon Boulevard to Alhambra Circle. At that point, the parade will counter march and proceed to Valencia, where the festivities will get underway. The parade will include six or seven floats being constructed by University of Miami students, a portrayal of the hanging of "Old Man Gloom" and horses and riders garbed in Spanish costumes. A mock bull fight, staged by Bill Kline will open the entertainment at the Fiesta site, where 16 Spanish market booths are being erected. Other entertainment includes night club acts at 9 p.m. each night, a Cuban rumba band for street dancing, a rhumba contest and a Latin beauty contest. Rides, the only entertainment features for which there will be a charge include a ferris wheel and a merry-go-round.

Man Sought In Theft Ignores Speed Charge

When Judge C. S. Robertson and Sgt. Robert Crittenden looked over the Municipal Court docket yesterday afternoon, there was one man listed that they knew for sure would never answer when his name was called. The name was Edmund S. Purcell, the address was 1135 Superior Avenue, Opa Locka and the charge was speeding. As the judge and the sergeant had foreseen, he didn't show up in Coral Gables yesterday. Only 26 minutes had spelled the difference between Purcell's being turned over to Miami Police on a stolen car charge and his present whereabouts being unknown. Purcell had been picked up here yesterday on a speeding charge and then turned loose on $25 bond. Just 26 minutes after he walked out of the Gables station, a teletype message came in from Miami identifying him as the driver of a car stolen from the Glades Drive-Yourself company of Miami Beach. The car was still in the back of the police station when the message ticked off the teletype, but Purcell was gone. The car was returned to the rental company and Judge Robertson ordered that Purcell's bond on the speeding charge be forfeited. Miami police are looking for Purcell today.

Larger Cities Tab Known Criminals

ST. LOUIS (UP) — A new system of keeping track of criminals and police characters on a nation-wide basis is being organized by metropolitan cities. Chief of Detectives Leonard Murphy disclosed the plan here. He said it calls for a clearing house in Los Angeles to distribute fingerprints, pictures, and other information regarding criminals who are moving from place to place. Under the new system, if it is know where a person with a police record is moving, that city will be notified, as will the Los Ongeles clearing house.

ALL-AMERICAS ON BENCH

Two All-American backs will be on the bench when Kansas and Georgia Tech match football speed January 1 in the 1948 Orange Bowl game. Head Coach George Sauer of Kansas was an All-America fullback at Nebraska. Head Coach Bobby Dodd of Tech was selected as quarterback on the mythical national team while at Tennessee.

FOR BETTER TELEPHONE SERVICE OUR NUMBER HAS BEEN CHANGED TO 83-1656 ROGERS ELECTRIC CO.

A COMPLETE ELECTRICAL APPLIANCE AND REPAIR STORE 225 Alhambra Circle

GUARD UNIT HERE BEGINS ON DEC. 17

(Continued from Page One) quarters will be at the triangle at the university campus. The top brass of the 211 infantry, of which Coral Gables Company B is a part, is also comprised of Gables men. The 211's commanding officer, Col. Robert Ballard, and executive officer, Lt. Col. John McFarlane, both live here. Wartime Ranks The recruiting stand is in charge of T/Sgt. John H. MacDonald and will be located in front of the Coral Gables First National Bank. All men between the ages of 17 and 35 years of age can join without previous military service while men with service are received up to the age of 45. The recruiting sergeant promises that wartime ranks will be honored in the guards and offers weekly pay of from $2.50 for privates up to $5.50 for master sergeants. Sgt. MacDonald doesn't offer any other inducements. But he believes the pay is worth while for only two hours duty a week. "It'll pay for laundry bills," he says in the traditional manner in which recruiting sergeants speak.

Speeding Costs Driver $20, Stop Charge Quashed

A motion to squash a charge against Marcel A. Sabatino, 23, of 4645 Michigan Boulevard of passing a stop sign was approved by Municipal Judge C. S. Robertson when Attorney Louis Sabatino held that the stop sign was in the city of South Miami, but a speeding charge against Sabatino was not disposed of so easily. Sabatino pleaded guilty to the speeding count, admitting he had a driver at least 45 miles per hour and he was fined $20. The delicate legal point involving the stop sign put it up to the Judge to decide whether Sabatino, who'd passed a South Miami stop sign at Red Road and U.S. route one to enter a Coral Gables street, should be tried for the offense in the Gables or South Miami. Judge Robertson avoided endless litigation by quashing the charge. Daniel Hall, 22, and Erline Hall, 25, a Negro couple of 2041⁄2 South Dixie Highway were both charged with disorderly conduct by fighting. Daniel was found guilty and paid a $50 fine while Erline was found not guilty on the charge. George Ridley, 40, of 1306 Pizarro Street fined $5.00 for failure to answer an intoxication charge and forfeited a $10 bond.

ERNIE ZIGS, CAR ZAGS, CRASHES

Coach "Spike" Harding of the University of Miami needn't worry about his 278-pound Hurricane tackle, Ernie Settembre, getting out of the practice of throwing effective blocks in the off season. Big Ernie, who is also the pie-eating and several other odd champions at school, was cruising along Ponce de Leon Boulevard last evening in his equally imposing 1920 DeSoto. When he cut sharp[ly] out of Coral Way, a Buick driven by Stanley A. Robins, 19, of 995 Ray Drive, Miami Beach, zigged when it should have zagged. There was only minor damage.

C. H. Taylor Dies

Funeral services will be held tomorrow at Irwin, Penn., for Charles H. Taylor, who died last Saturday. Taylor, a former general sales manager of the Simmons Mattress Co., had lived in Coral Gables for 15 years after his retirement. He was 66 years of age at the time of his death. He leaves no relatives in Coral Gables, but was well known here for many years. He was a member of the Biltmore Country Club and other organizations.

Burglars Brave Cold For $2,000 Warmth

PHILADELPHIA (UP) — It was chilly work for burglars at a warehouse firm — but they have $2,000 to keep them warm. Police said thieves who entered a second-floor office of Good Brothers, food distributers, pushed a 440-pound safe down the stairs and into a sound-proof refrigerator compartment, where they worked in sub-freezing temperatures to pry open the strongbox with a crowbar. The $2,000 lost was the firm's week-end receipts.

KANSAS' FIRST BOWL GAME

Kansas will be making its New Year's bowl debut against Georgia Tech in the 1948 Orange Bowl football classic — and the Jayhawkers may well consider it a good omen. Tennessee, Georgia, Missouri and Oklahoma all played their first bowl games in Miami.

275 Units Built Thru November, Topping 1946

A total of 275 residential, apartment and store units have been constructed in Coral Gables through November, topping the 12-month total for 1946 by 47 units, Tax Assessor Thomas C. Blount revealed today. Blount, who completed compiling of November tax totals this morning, stated that permits have been issued for 197 residences, 43 apartments and duplexes and 35 store buildings. His figures do not include industrial construction, additions nor the University of Miami's $5,000,000 housing project. In 1946, the total for the entire year included 130 residences, 34 apartments and duplexes and 64 store buildings. Permits for three new residences, totaling $47,000, were issued this morning by Building Inspector Gilbert B. Campbell. They included: V. P. Dunaway, $14,000 residence at 628 Avenue Gondoliera; Carlos B. Schoeppl, architect. Sol Goldman, $15,000 residence at 1426 Avenue Venetia; Edward T. Rempe, architect and J. E. Shaw, builder. J. E. Shaw, $18,000 residence at 940 Avenue Almeria; Edward T. Rempe, architect. George B. Caster was issued a permit to construct a $3,000 porch addition to his residence at 1254 Coral Way. It was designed by Upton C. Ewing and will be constructed by Sparks Construction Company.

Power Pole Accident Proves He's Tough

TULAE, Cal. (UP) — Highway patrolmen still don't know how he lived through it, but they had him, alive, in the county jail for proof. Jose Vasquez, 25, was speeding along the highway when his car left the road. It leaped seven feet into the air, according to a sober witness, and struck a power pole at that height. The car and pole burned. Vasquez was uninjured. He was arrested for drunken driving.

Drainage Vote Draws Meager Poll Attendance

There had been only a meager turnout of voters in the Gables area to approve or disapprove the proposition allowing the Everglades Drainage district to exchange lands within the district for lands outside of the district as the Riviera-Times went to press this afternoon. Most of the voting clerks believed the balloting had been heavily in favor of the measure. At the Coral Gables Country Club, Election Clerk Mrs. Lydia H. Hubbell reported 67 had shown up out of 1758 voters registered in precinct 81. Mrs. Bess R. Jones, clerk of precinct 80, said 65 out of an estimated 1,400 eligibles had come to the Coral Gables Elementary School. At Coconut Grove, Mrs. Leon I. Drysdale, election clerk of precinct 77, said 56 voters had appeared at the fire station out of some 1100 registered. Superintendent of Registration Carl Holmer, Jr., said at noon the county-wide voting was "very light." He predicted a top figure of 15,000 voters out of the total of 122,000 eligible.

Rasco Punts Ball Into Thief's Hands

Twelve-year-old Bob Rasco of 2203 Alhambra Circle made the greatest punt of his career yesterday and the long spiraling kick ended in his football being stolen. R. A. Rasco, the boy's dad, reported to police today that two boys riding bicycles scooped up the football from the street and rode off with it. Rasco chased the pair of pigskin-parloiners, but couldn't catch them.

County Asks Chapman Field Use Change

The Dade County Commission this morning called upon the War Assets Administration to change the classification of Chapman Field from that of an airport, and at the same time indicated that the county was desirous of securing the 890-acre tract for a park site, in conjunction with the Bird and Wildlife Division of the Department of Agriculture. Coral Gables has also expressed a desire to bid for the property if the airport restriction is removed. School Board Member James Henderson indicated today that the board is also still desirous of securing the land for future development but said that it was not contemplated to spend "a lot of money" to develop it as an airport for flight training.

Younger were retained on the board. The balloting took place at the annual meeting at the Country Club of Coral Gables. The new directors will replace Charles H. Crim and William T. McIlwain. All were elected for three-year terms. The directors will meet at noon Saturday at the Country Club to name officers for the coming year.

South Miami Church Eyes Gables Site

The South Miami Methodist Church last night postponed breaking ground for an addition to its present location at 97 Sunset Drive and is now considering a new site for its church in Coral Gables. The contemplated site here is at Levante Road and Red Road. A dinner last month to raise funds for the addition, which was to be a parish house, had raised $15,000 in a single evening and the quota has since been lifted to $25,000. Last night's action was taken by 28 members of the official board. Crowded quarters and the inadvisability of repairing the present building as well as a desire to be near the University of Miami and nearer the center of church membership are behind the proposed move to the Gables. The church would still be known as the First Methodist Church of South Miami should the site be moved to Coral Gables.
