Giosa-Shapiro Fight Draw In First Coliseum Card

Eddie Misses Badly After Eyecut Old man experience in the form of veteran Maxie Shapiro and a reopened cut over the left eye almost caught up with Philadelphia's Eddie Giosa in the main go of the first Coliseum fight program Tuesday night. The 10-round decision was a draw, and the 5,500 house acclaimed the wind-up and semi-final attractions as two of the best seen in this area in many a year. Giosa Timing Off Badly Giosa weighed in at 137 and Shapiro at 134, but the odds on the Brotherly Love scrapper were based on far more than the weight advantage. Shapiro, clever in the early rounds, was every inch the boxer but it looked like the favorite could name the round up to the fourth. After that, the trickle of claret from an eye well worked-over by Shapiro became a gusher and Eddie couldn't get in range to lower the boom. Shapiro was hurt in the fifth and eighth when Giosa started landing clean shots to the New Yorker's head, but the eye became increasingly troublesome, Shapiro drew deep on his savvy, and the bout went the limit to the surprise of many fans. Judge Jimmy Smith scored 100-97 in favor of Giosa; Judge Si Gottfried reversed his tally to favor Maxie, and Referee Red McLoughlin called it a draw. The semi-windup, however, was the biggest surprise of the night, with Jackie Lyons of Oklahoma City giving away 14 pounds to highly-touted Sanders Cox, of Dallas, Tex., and emerging with a clean-cut knockout in 41 seconds of the ninth round. Sanders apparently did not know how to take full advantage of his 190 pounds, and his blows carried little authority after the opening heats. Lyons, turning in a much better battle than expected, was forced to hang on doggedly until he put the lights out for Cox with a hard right to the head in the final frame. In the preliminaries, neither Jimmy Tell, 142, of Pittsburgh, nor middleweight Eugene Smith, of Youngstown, Ohio, had much trouble with their respective opponents. Tell, a comer by all qualifications, TKO'd Juan Carrera, New York 147-pounder, in 1:42 of the first, while Smith had to go four stanzas before dropping Jack Brockwell, Johnson City, Tenn., with a smashing body attack at 1:04. In the curtain raiser, Billy Hill, of Macon, Georgia, and Bernie Carver of the Bronx fought a four-round draw.

TODAY'S SPORTS PARADE Greenberg 'At Crossroads' Of Baseball Career

BY OSCAR FRALEY UP Sports Writer NEW YORK, Dec. 17, (UP)-Big Hank Greenberg, the power of his arm a mystery hidden behind the wall of a plaster of paris cast, admitted today that he was "at the crossroads" of his baseball career. "I honestly don't know whether I'll play baseball in 1948," said Greenberg, who recently had a "spur" removed from the elbow of his throwing arm. "I've had two or three offers but I don't know." It would break Greenberg's heart to have to leave the game. But the towering slugger disclosed that he has failed in attempts to purchase a minor league club. Meanwhile, he apparently isn't satisfied with the offers he has received and: "I certainly won't play in the minors." So the big fellow who will be 37 years old on New Year's Day admitted that "he may go into some other line of business." Thus the baseball fate of the four-time home run king depends on the outcome of the operation on his right arm. "We'll take off the cast on Thursday," Greenberg said. "The doctor seems to think the arm will be all right again and that may decide what I'll do." The six foot, four inch athlete who in 13 years in the majors has slammed out 331 home runs recently was released by Pittsburgh after one season with the Pirates. Prior to that he had reached (Please Turn to Page Seven)

Commission Stays Action On Athletics

The city commission deferred action last night on the proposed ordinance that will establish the Coral Gables Athletic Commission. City Attorney E. L. Semple drafted a nordinance which went under discussion by the members of the sports board in a session at the Coral Gables War Memorial Youth Center Monday night, but the Athletic Commission members requested more time to work out the details before the ordinance is passed. Tentative plans called for the measure to be approved and take effect in ten days. The action will postpone the ordinance until after the second Coliseum fight card on Jan. 6.

New Faces In 'Cane Line-up Start Against Florida Cagers

The team which ran up a 22-5 edge on the University of Tampa in the first 10 minutes of the final half Saturday night will start for the Hurricanes against the University of Florida in the first of the two games series Friday night in the Coral Gables Coliseum. This squad will have Donnie Cobb and Abe Friedman at the forwards, Capt. Tony Yovicsin at center and Bob Carroll and Tony Terrera at the guard slots. Friedman and Yovicsin are the only veterans in this quintet and each proved last week against Tampa he was ready, though Yovicsin, just out for basketball after a gruelling football season, hasn't quite settled down to the floor work of which he is capable. His under-the-basket performance against Tampa was excellent, however, and he is shooting well. Friedman, with 31 points, was the Hurricane high scorer. Cobb, a virtual unknown in Miami basketball until Coach Hart Morris inserted him in the starting lineup against Tampa, bucketed seven field goals and if he can continue that pace, will ease Morris' forward situation tremendously. Carroll Also Promising Carroll, also an unknown before Saturday, did brilliant defensive (Please Turn to Page Seven)

Riddle Bows To Furman, 47-45

Riddle College's cagers, currently on a three-game road trip through South Carolina, came so near and yet so far against Furman, losing to the Purple Hurrlcanes 47-45 at Greenville last night. The Riddlers play Erskine at Due West, S.C., tonight.

Beachcomber Seeks Addition To Record For Biscayne Championship

Beachcomber, Paul Sutherland's outstanding five-time winner and the strong favorite to annex the championship of the fall meeting at the Biscayne Kennel Club, will be out tonight in the featured ninth of the stellar midweek program to add to that record. This speedy son of More Taxes-Soapy Hands which came here this season as the Portland, Ore., derby champion and then added the Biscayne Inaugural and several trophy victories to his list, has been out of the money only once in his nine starts since Nov. 15. In his three defeats, as he finished second twice and third once, he bowed to Dry Lake, He Hath and Sooner Select. Two of these, Dry Lake and He Hath will be in tonight's entry and rank as chief challengers.
