Recognition Given To Women Students, Too

HIGHEST WOMEN'S honorary at UM is Nu Kappa Tau. Here Susan Dunkel is tapped, NKT is a national women's honorary brought to Miami in 1935 by Dean of Women emeritus Mary B. Merritt. "We thought the girls needed some recognition, too." That's why Mary B. Merritt, now Dean of Women Emeritus, brought Nu Kappa Tau honorary to the University of Miami Campus in 1937. In the ensuing 14 years, close to 200 UM women have been honored by membership. Clad in black academic robes, mortar boards and salmon-colored scarfs, the women members tap in silent contrast to the drum beating splendor of their brother honorary, Iron Arrow. They walk in solemn file in search of their tappees, the only sound being the click of their high heels. Many Gables residents, now housewives, clubwomen, socialites and career women, were thus honored as UM undergraduates. "A remarkable number of our alumnae still live in the area." Miss Merritt said. Included are: Mesdames Audre Rothenberg Finkelstein, Marcia Hargrove Ferguson and Marie Reichard Fein, all of whom were charter members. Doris Page Turner, Margaret Shillington, Margaret Blue Howell, Lucille Brown Nottfort and Miriam Kaminski Fetter were also members, tapped in the '40's. In the last decade, residents Betty Newman McDonell, Glenda Fink Johnson, Ellen Stone Alvin, and Joan Odell have been named. One of the men who will be broadcasting the radio account of Saturday night's Homecoming game, Robert Stanton, was the first student body president at the University of Miami. He was also a member of the first UM football and basketball teams. He is now a member of the radio-TV faculty. The Department of Zoology was begun at UM in its first year, 1926. Sharing the teaching duties with one other instructor was Jay F. W. Pearson, now President of the University.
