Four Seniors In 1926, Three From Coral Gables

There were four seniors in the first graduating class at the University of Miami in 1926. Three were from the Gables. One out of every 25 residents of Coral Gables has graduated from Miami. An estimated 1,200 persons graduated from UM since 1926 still live in the area. Today, civic, professional, industrial and social circles are well-sprinkled by leaders holding UM diplomas. In politics, Congressman Dante Fascell (class of '38), State Representative George Hollahan ('49), Metro Commissioner Robert Haverfield ('46) and Coral Gables Vice-Mayor Frank Kerdyk ('39) maintain homes in the Gables area. Former Coral Gables Mayor Dave Hendricks ('38) and Police Chief William Kimbrough ('34) and Fire Chief Paul Matheson are also UM alumni. Miami's Mayor Robert iKng High also attended the University as an undergraduate, from 1944-1948. Prominent Coral Gables women such as Justice of the Peace Ruth Linder Sutton ('30) and socialite Roma Pape Swanson ('36) are also in the ranks of UM alumnae. Mrs. Ruth Beckham, wife of the late juvenile judge, attended Miami from 1937-1940. In many cases, both husband and wife are UM graduates. These include insurance executive Patrick S. Cesarano ('35) and his wife Beryl ('33). Executive Red Franklin and wife Eileen, socialites and local authorities on UM's early history, both received their degrees in 1931. Among the advertisers in UM's 1927 yearbook, IBIS, was the MIAMI RIVIERA, now The Coral Gables Times-Guide. The president of UM's 1941 senior class, Charlie Franklin, served an abbreviated term. He was drafted. His successor, by popular vote, thereafter had to resign when it was discovered that he was only a junior. Another highlight of the "Fabulous Forties" was the 1946 February commencement in which Winston Churchill accepted an honorary doctor of laws degree from UM.
