Gables High Notes / Senior Wins State 4-H Award

By LESLIE GROSS Jay Edwards, a senior at Coral Gables High School, has won the 4-H award in the State Beautification Contest. Linda Easton, Gables grad, has received Freshman Honors at Wellesley. Nicholas Farr, another Gables alumnus, has made the Dean's List at the University of Maine. The Gables High Junior Varsity football team, Wednesday, Nov. 16, defeated the Southwest High Junior Varsity, 20-6. The Gables High National Forensic League contingent failed to improve upon its record of last year at the State Student Congress at Tallahassee. Once again, Gables walked off with the overall point trophy, after competition with over 20 schools from across the state. Mike Sadler was elected Best Presiding Officer of House B, and Richard Schuster was elected President of the Senate. NFL'ers back at home are busy with a different issue, that of the current NFL calendars. This year's model already has an advanced sale of 950, well above that of last year. The new calendar will include College Board dates, the football schedules, co-operative test dates, and a wealth of other innovations. Total sale is expected to be well in excess of 1100 calendars. Teacher Honored Mrs. Ruth Johnston, Gables history teacher, has been honored by a local adult sorority. Mrs. Johnston, a teacher in Dade County for over 35 years and the organizer and sponsor of the Gables High chapter of Allied Youth, was recognized for her service to the community in Allied Youth work. The Westinghouse Talent Search team, sponsored by Mr. Walter Bowlby, Gables chemistry teacher, recently began its pre-test sessions for boning up. Bill Zame and Katie Kamp have spoken in the two sessions to date. Last year, Gables placed three students in the Westinghouse honors group: June West, Maxine Goldman and Robert Friis. Friis was selected as one of the top 40 science students in the nation and won a trip to Washington. Mr. Bowlby and the Westinghouse participants are hopeful of bettering last year's outstanding record. National Honor Society recently held its initiation program for new members. The proceedings were held in the school cafeteria on the evening of Nov. 15. Treasurer Penny Poppe was in charge of refreshments and devotions; secretary Catherine Teets supervised invitations and publicity; vice president Lon Dowlen was in charge of lights, cleanup and explanation of membership requirements; President Leslie Gross planned the program, conducted the meeting, and delivered a talk on NHS history and purposes. The guest speaker was our principal, Mr. Rath, who gave an informative talk on college choice and preparation.
