TALKING THINGS OVER with his two proteges, Sir Echo and Danny, is Johnny Jones, popular ventriloquist, who often appears at children's parties in the area.
Little Johnny Stands Tall Before Children
By BOB DAVIS Children at birthday parties usually stand taller than 4 foot 6 inches Johnny Jones, but the midget ventriloquist becomes a giant in their eyes when he begins his routine. For the past three months, Johnny Jones has entertained Coral Gables children with his sleight-of-hand as well as his dummies, Sir Echo and Danny. Jones puts it this way, "The kids enjoy my act all right, but my secret is that I'm as old as they are. If it's a 4-year-old group then I act like a 4-year-old and before long the kids accept me as one of them." However, identification has its drawbacks. "Children are wide-eyed and serious when I begin the act, but once under-way, one kid'll holler out, 'Oh, heck anybody can do that.'" "In that case I'll call the child up and after he fails I'll demonstrate it for them," says Jones in a mellow tone. A 38-year-old who weighs 95 pounds, Jones performed at clubs and schools in North Dade until approximately three months ago when he circulated a classified advertisement in the TIMES. With one job leading to another, Jones says that becoming a Coral Gables birthday institution would be just fine with him. Nevertheless, a good part of Jones' work is traffic safety promotion with school children. He charges no fee for these performances which he conducts at Dade and Broward schools. Sir Echo "My safety boy is Sir Echo who is dressed in a khaki uniform and wears a AAA badge." (Jones refrains from referring to his figures as dummies.) A member of Hallandale's Lion Club and Chamber of Commerce, Jones has been living in South Florida for two years. He and his father make their home in a house trailer. Though his parents, brother and sister are of normal height, Jones says he was short-changed. Explaining it through Sir Echo, Jones says, "You know why you are so small? Because you were born in the depression, ha, ha, ha." Jones smiled warmly, "That's the kind of stuff that always get the kids to laugh."

Car Struck While Parked In Driveway
Autos know no sanctuary when it comes to accidents. Georgine L. Walker, 37, of 1250 Bird Rd., found out when her car, parked in the driveway in front of her home, was damaged in a three-car collision early Christmas morning. It all began, according to Gables Officer Charles M. Harris, when Albert Glick, 32, of 6853 SW 28th Ter., and Margaret B. Howell, 54, of 5900 SW 42nd Ter., were eastbound on Bird shortly after 3:30 a.m. that morning. The Howell car, Harris said, cut into Glick's lane and the two cars collided. The impact caused the Howell car to go out of control, knock down a tree and crash into the Walker car, parked in the driveway. Estimated damage to the Howell car was $100 and $75 to Glick's, but the parked car was more seriously damaged.

Thieves Open Yule Presents
The "petty cash" stolen from a Coral Gables home between Friday and Saturday was annoying enough, but what really irked the Orrin Wills, of 2000 North Greenway Dr., was the Christmas presents that were opened and some stolen. The "petty cash" amounted to $1000 in $100 bills, Coral Gables police said. But the chaos created by having all the presents opened, identifications lost, and wrappings strewn all over was particularly irksome. A 17-inch portable television set was also stolen from the home, ransacked while the Wills were visiting friends.
