with Ed Knight TIRED OF the restrictions at Dade County-owned beaches? Then try Tahiti Beach. It's only a hop, skip and a jump from your place and you can do what you want there, no whistle-blowing or scaring of the kiddies by the life-guards. WE TRIED Tahiti on the 4th. And I can't remember when I've had a better time at the beach. The young-uns took their inner tube, raft and bucket and shovel - and they got to use them. You can't use these beach "necessities" at the Dade County beaches, Matheson Hammock or Crandon Park. NO, I DON'T know the reason. There must be one, but I've never learned it. Anyway, the last time we went to Matheson Hammock the kiddies took their buckets, shovels, tubes and raft. But they never got to use them long enough to enjoy it. THE YOUNGEST one is an obedient little lad. But the beach isn't a beach to him without a bucket and shovel. He can't see the harm in digging at the beach. And I can't either. NEVERTHELESS, the youngest one did begin digging at Matheson Hammock and when the "life guard" noticed it I thought that a felony had been committed. First the well-tanned life guard blew his whistle. Everyone looked up to see what was the matter. THE LITTLE LAD kept on digging. Next the life guard picked up his megaphone and shouted for the little lad to stop and even fill up his hole. All eyes were on the little lad by this time. He thought he had done something wrong. He stopped - and then asked me why he had to stop. I couldn't answer his question. ONE OF THE other youngsters wanted to use the raft. This is taboo, too, we learned. So the kiddies romped around in the water. There is no diving board at Matheson Hammock. They need one. THE NEXT TIME we went to the beach, it was at Tahiti. And we have returned there ever since. To get there you go to the circle at Le Jeune Road and Sunset Drive. Instead of going south as you would to get to Matheson Hammock, you go east, parallel to the Coral Gables Waterway down a narrow, winding road. IT COSTS fifty cents for adults and a quarter for children to get in. But I think it's worth it. We need more places like Tahiti Beach in Dade County. There's a refreshment stand to get practically what you want (including beer) and the prices are reasonable. FOR THOSE WHO prefer to fish while mom and the kiddies are using the tube and the bucket and shovel, there's a sea wall extending some 500 feet adjacent to the beach for fishing. There's fish there, too. THERE ARE picnic tables there, too, right on the beach for that picnic lunch. Each table is covered with a roof of palm fronds that keeps out what sun you don't want. There's a wading area off to the south. Give Tahiti Beach a chance sometime. I think you'll like it. THERE'S A NEW game being played in the southwest now that the Palmetto Expressway has been completed. It's called "mark up the expressway embankments" and it's catching on like wildfire. It's an easy game to play. ALL YOU NEED is a very black crayon and the mentality of a child. Simply wait until it's dark, go to the embankment and scribble or write exactly what you want. Someday, when the county has time, it will clean off the markings and then it happens again. ONE EMBANKMENT in particular has been marked up twice since the opening of the expressway and it'll happen again. When I last passed the embankment holding the expressway bridge over Coral Way, some Greek letters signifying either a fraternity or a sorority had been marked in. And it doesn't add to the beauty of the expressway engineering. ONE SOLUTION to the problem is to paint-decorate in some way the embankments so we can say to the fraternity boys "ha, ha, we beat you to it." This was done to the Coral Gables sewage treatment plant just off South Dixie Highway. CITY OF Coral Gables, when the treatment plant was completed, just knew some wise fraternity boys would have a field day with that big, round white building. The solution: the city had artist John St. John paint a mural depicting the history of Florida on the edifice. And it worked, too. The fraternity boys were stymied. Any fraternity marking would just about fit into the mural.
