South Miami Roundup
with Ed Knight All earthly delights are sweeter in expectation than in enjoyment; but all spiritual pleasures more in frui-tion than in expectation. — Feltham. A VACATION wouldn't be a vacation without the anticipation and the planning beforehand. We've counted the months, the weeks and now the days until we take off on the much-needed vacation trip — and now it is upon us. NEXT MONDAY is D-day and 6 a.m. is H-hour. But before that there's more to do than we possibly imagined. We'll have to borrow some luggage from the folks, get the car tuned up and serviced and do a million and one other things to ease our minds while we're away on our trip. WE'VE MADE a list of things we want to take with us and it's getting longer every day. There's the camera. We have to get some film for it, too. Don't forget the flashlight, tools for the station wagon, the fishing equipment, stamps and stationary and the beach eqiupment. WHO DO WE want to send post cards to? We've made a list of this, too. And unless we're careful, we'll be spending most of our time writing post cards instead of having the good time we're describing. TWO SOLID weeks of relaxation. No more newspaper deadlines, no fighting of traffic down Bird Road and back each day and no more early morning alarm clock rings to joust me from bed. We'll have to stop the milk and it might be a good idea to have the paperboy keep those big newspapers from pounding our door every morning. AND WHAT are we going to do with the goldfish, Goldie. This has been chief concern of one of our sons, Doug, eight, who worries about such things as birds, white mice, hamsters and frogs. We'll have to ask one of the neighbors to take in the mail periodically or we might never see those bills when we get back. WE WERE looking at road maps the other night. We'll be traveling west on U.S. 41 to Naples, turn north at Naples and go through Fort Myers, Punta Gorda and Sarasota to St. Petersburg, where we'll spend some time on Madeira Beach. Some cottages on the beach were highly recommended by some neighbors and we thought we'd spend our vacation there. "GOSH, THAT looks like a long way," one of the young-uns said. "It's farther than Marathon," (where we went last year) another said. "I want to stop at Naples to see that new fishing pier," I told the group. "I wonder if we could see Sanibel Island (off Fort Myers). I've heard so much about it," another said. AND SO we'll take off next week with a full tank of gas, a car full of kids, plenty of luggage and road maps. And we won't come back until we are out of one of the above. It's not a long way to St. Pete. But it's not the distance that makes for a happy vacation. LOOKING THROUGH THE GUIDE files of a year ago, these are the highlights: The Perrine Post Office was dedicated, South Miami Coach Line began using air-conditioned buses and C. B. Petry was one of two men being considered for South Miami City Manager. Petry got the job early in August. IT WAS also a year ago the Metro operations in the southern end of the County moved into new permanent headquarters in the Perrine Civic Center, Ludlam Drainage Canal was put off limits for fishing and swimming and a Tastee Bun Drivateria was opened in the 7500 block of SW 8th St. It seems like almost yesterday, doesn't it? SOUTH MIAMI Council likes the expressway, thinks its helpful in taking much truck and automobile traffic off South Dixie Highway through the city. But the city fathers have requested of Winston Carlton, State Road Department engineer, that a sign pointing to South Miami at the Sunset Drive turnoff be installed. After all, there's a sign at the Tamiami Trail turnoff pointing to Coral Gables.
