Southwest High School Names Superlatives

By JOY CHERRY Corresponent Excitement filled the air as the senior editor of the Aquila Robin Mason announced the senior superlatives in the auditorium Jan. 22 before a assembly. Receiving the top awards of their classmates were: Mr. and Miss Senior Class—Juliette Heisser, Russell Bizzette; Mr. and Miss Congeniality — Sally Kitchin, Donald Soldinger; Mr. and Miss Courtesy — Barbara Bailey, Jimmy Jones; Mr. and Miss School Spirit — Patsye Doyle, David Thompson; Mr. and Miss Personality — Sandra Marchinsky, William Heins; Mr. and Miss Fashion — Sheryl Stoddard, Van Fleisher; Mr. and Miss Athlete — Shirley Dube, Wally Dayhoff; Mr. and Miss Talent — Toni Carpenter, Ronnie Mason; Mr. and Miss Good-Looking—Frances Opiz, John Mullens; Mr. and Miss Success-Bound—Regina Cox, Joseph Faix; Mr. and Miss Dependability — Patricia Daughtery, Luke Crawford; Mr. and Mrs. Wittiest — Lenni, Dan Doherty; Pictures of the top twenty-four seniors will be given top billing in the Aquila, 1962 yearbook. APPEAR ON TV Six Southwest students will appear on "Answer Please," a panel discussion on Channel 10, January 27. Charles Mirman, Sandra Peyser, Jan Glidewell, Deborah Romoser, Don Wright, and Joy Cherry will ask Miami businessmen questions on the topic "Magic City Center," a subject concerning the beautification and remodeling of the downtown Miami area to make it more businesslike and cosmopolitan. S.W. SHAPES UP Keeping in step with the physical fitness program at Southwest a new phrase has been coined; "shape up or ship out." This slogan is indicative of the emphasis being placed on President Kennedy's Youth Fitness Program at Southwest. Southwest students placed far above the national percentile of those passing the minimum fitness tests. Surprisingly enough, the girls outdid the boys with a 96 per cent passing, compared to 82 per cent of the boys. The main difference was the modified pull-ups for the girls, and the more difficult type for the boys. Recent fitness tests conducted in Dade Schools revealed that 79 per cent of the 87,337 students tested passed the minimum test; the same test that only 50 per cent of 200,-000 students tested in pilot cities in the country passed. WIN PRINTING AWARDS Two Southwest students won three out of nine senior awards at a printing contest sponsored by the Printing Industry of Greater Miami. Stephen Pelley, receiving $25 for his first place award in linoleum block printing, also won $10 for his second place award in letterpress printing. Dan Calabrese was awarded a certificate of merit for a third place in letterpress printing. This is the third year that Southwest has captured at least one first place winner plus other minor awards.
