HUBERT CURTIS JOINS PILKINGTON STAFF

Hubert Curtis arrived Wednesday from Jacksonville to join the staff of A. Derby Pilkington at his new studio, 2300 Ponce de Leon Boulevard. Mr. Curtis is a specialist in home portrait photography and has been associated with such well known photographers as Sarony of New York, Bachrach and Ewing of Washington, D. C. and Bachrach of Boston. A party of four New Yorkers at Stuart last week caught 30 sailfish is five days, which ought to be some kind of a record.

of Henry Salem Hubbell and spent much time painting in the west. A true explorer, he has his own method of working, combining music with pigment. He first works with a prism to divide color and uses a very simple palette. Among his discoveries is the fact that the heat of the tropical glare is a white heat and not a yellow one. Of all the local artists, Franz-Josef Bolinger has most successfully interpreted this scientific fact. Intensely active Mr. Bolinger has also found time to turn his attention to portraiture and many prominent Miamians have sat before his easel. The exhibition will continue until January 25th. and will be open to the public from 9:30 a. m. to 9 p. m. daily.

man of the Markman & Moseley company, sixty per cent is paid for labor and tomatoes. The canning season in normal years is about ten weeks, therefore the industry represents approximately $480,000 paid out to workers and for tomatoes and cans during the season. "Of the above amount, a total of approximately $268,000 is paid for labor and tomatoes during the ten week period. The value of these canning plants to the workers and farmers in the agricultural areas is shown by the fact that without such plants to take the vine ripened tomatoes they would be a otal loss to the growers, as only green tomatoes are shipped to other markets. "The money paid out by the canneries to laborers and farmers is spent among the stores of this area, therefore its benefits are county wide," Mr. Holley pointed out.

State News, Briefs

William C. Eurich, head of the U. S. Laboratory Supply Company in St. Petersburg, announced last week that the Guinea Pig Colony from which about 80,000 of the little animals are marketed annually, will be opened to the public. Reports from all over Florida indicate that the Christmas retail trade was the best the state has ever seen, even exceeding the boom days of 1929. National defense payrolls and easier credit are given as the principal reasons for the increase of about 25 percent over last year. The Fort Myers News-Press has an airplane newsboy who flies over a group of sub-tropical isles and drops the morning paper to subscribers without landing. By this service the tourist island residents get the news with their breakfasts instead of having to wait for slow service by boat and ferry. A couple of men in MacClenny are having a "swill" time trying to find enough hogs to eat all the swill they are receiving under their contract for hauling away all the scraps and swill accumulated at Camp Blanding. The 750 hogs they now have can't make a dent in what they are getting—and this is just a "drop in a bucket" compared to what there will be when 60,000 men arrive at the camp.

Pedestrian Protection — Plan Suggested to Reduce Accidents

COOPERATION IN STREET USE: To make street use convenient and safe for both motorists and pedestrians, there must be an equitable division of right-of-way. In return for pedestrians yielding the right-of-way to motorists BETWEEN INTERSECTIONS, motorists should yield right-of-way to pedestrians in crosswalks or when making right or left turns, when pedestrians are crossing on the proper signal. Motorists should also yield right-of-way to pedestrians before crossing sidewalks. At intersections where vehicle turns interfere with pedestrians, a vigorous program of education and enforcement should be instituted. —AAA Safety Features
