The Clipper Crowd NEWS OF THE ACTIVITIES OF THE PERSONNEL OF PAN-AMERICAN AIRWAYS

By Nancy Humphreys Excited and exuberant on New Year's Eve were Miss Betty Kugler and A. S. Galbraith (Pan-American's Purchasing Representative for the Eastern Division). And for a very excellent reason. Miss Kugler was wearing on her third finger, left hand, a very beautiful ring! So far, the engagement has not been officially announced—but everyone in Hangar C New Years Eve could see that sparkler- Miss Kugler, who attended the University of Alabama, is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Victor Kugler, 30 N. E. 97th Street, Miami, formerly of Woodbury, N. J. E. H. (Eddie) Cowart of the Fabric department wasn't quite agile enough to leap through Leap Year unscathed. On Monday, December 30th, Miss Jane Webb, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. C. F. Webb, 2265 N. W. 7th Street, proudly showed for the first time her solitaire. There's no doubt he popped the question. Miss Webb is employed in the accounting offices of Jackson Security Company. The wedding will take place in the early summer. Graham B. Grosvenor, a Director of Pan American Airways and special assistant to the president, is in Miami on special duty. While here, Mr. Grosvenor is conferring with the Division Manager and other officials of the company. Special Expressway from Brasil for Pan Am, Dr. Cauby C. Aranjo, stopped overnight in Miami this Saturday en route to New York. Again in Miami is Steve Ryan, of the firm of Loomis, Suffern and Fernald. Mr. Ryan is one of the regular group of auditors that comes to Miami every year just about this time. Mario Martinez, Express Superintendent for the Eastern Division, left Miami Key southward bound on January 2nd on an inspection trip of the entire division. He plans to be away about three weeks. After a happy holiday season spent with his family and friends in Miami, Favaris Aller, a "traveling representative" for Traffic, departed from Miami January 6th to return to his post in Colombia. Many a change occured in the hangars during the last week, including; Promoted to rate of first-class mechanic: S. A. Brown, in plane overhaul; H. T. Hurlburt, in the metal shop; G. C. Duncan, in the instrument shop; J. H. Jay, in the propeller shop; S. W. Morris, in the paint shop; R. L. Bow, on the line crew; in the motor overhaul shop: P. J. Haff, H. O. Sweat, and A. Whitehouse. Promoted to the rate of second-class mechanic was P. C. Standley, jr. It's downright disgraceful the way no one from Pan American takes any interest in their men's basketball team. The men practice and practice; and then play a hard game and win—and what happens? About three people in the audience applaud! Every night that the Commercial League plays there are three different games—six teams—and every other team except ours gets lots of cheering from the audience. No wonder Eastern Air Lines is leading in the Commercial League and we are only in fourth place! What's the point of having a team if no one's going to support it? For the THREE people that are interested: Next Tuesday, January 14th, at 8:30 in the Miami High gymnasium we play Graham Dairies. Thanks for your continued support. A former resident of Miami and an "old-timer" with Pan Am is M. J. Rice, now regional directer, heading up of the New York office. When in Miami ten years ago, Mr. Rice was head of the traffic department of the Eastern Division. He is at the moment in Colombia on a short business trip having passed through Miami January second, headed South. A. M. Menocal, Traffic Manager of Cubana, spent six hours in Miami New Year in Miami. Mr. Menocal was here on business last week. In Cuba for a week of pleasure and sightseeing is Mrs. G. D. Grossman, wife of the assistant to the Division Traffic Manager. Mrs. Grossman plans to take a short jaunt down to Camaguey by plane from Havana. New employees: in the stockroom at Municipal Airport, Gus C. Melton; apprentice radio operators Dana M. Scott and Stanley K. Cikla; clerk in accounting, Wayne T. Mitchell. New Junior pilots: Samuel D. Freeman, jr., Edmund A. Spense, Paul J. Sears Kimball J. Scribner, and Lawrence M. Holloway. Convalescing at his home at 3588 Main Highway, Coconut Grove, from an attack of grippe is Max Weber, senior pilot for Pan Am. Well, Mr. Carroll, you can start tearing your hair again soon. Another young lady is going to depart from your fold 'long about March first.
