The Clipper Crowd NEWS OF THE ACTIVITIES OF THE PERSONNEL OF PAN-AMERICAN AIRWAYS By Nancy Humphreys
'TIS WELL THE H. Hankins, 4040 Kiaora Street, Coconut Grove, aren't superstitious, for young Timothy Hamilton Hankins arrived on March 13th. The stork dropped his 8 lb. 21⁄2 oz. bundle at University Hospital at 9:40 a. m. The bundle was a brunette—a very healthy little brunette. Mrs. Hankins is also doing well. Mr. Hankins is Operations Engineer for Pan Am's eastern division. The St. Patrick's Day theme was carried out in the decorations at the shower given by Mrs. E. R. Mills, 3601 Poinciana Avenue, Coconut Grove, on March 17th, honoring Miss Marion Frederick, bride-elect of Ray Bourret. It was a "miscellaneous" shower—and the gifts were certainly assorted! Such necessary items as kitchen utensils and linens vied with sterling silver side-pieces, blue satin slippers, and nighties, luggage in the admiration of the guests. The mothers of both the bride and groom were honored guests. Among other guests were: Miss Dorothea Jadrnoja, Mrs. P. Armand De Claive, Mrs. Charles Chase, Miss Betty Culverwell, Mrs. Bruce McCorquodale, Mrs. J. McGchee Whitner, Mrs. Merle C. Balch, Mrs. W. A. Foss, Miss Ruth Simpson, Mrs. H. E. Hanson, Miss Consuelo Prado, Miss Christina Kurchilik, Miss Lorraine Davis, Mrs. E. S. Popko, Mrs. Richard Jackson, Mrs. William Coleman, Mrs. Annie Peters, Miss Ella Neilson and Miss Hunter. Margie! The wedding of Miss Frederick and Mr. Bourret will be an event of March 29th. Little Ellin Mary Flaherty has been in this world for five weeks now. This young lady, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Lester M. Flaherty, 4225 Loquat Drive, Coconut Grove, arrived on February 18th. She was a great big bundle, too, weighing 8 lb., 151⁄2 oz. at birth. Mr. Flaherty is a flight mechanic. The executive offices are still functioning, reports Miss Elizabeth Tunis, "even if the boss is out of town". The Division Manager is in Washington in connection with the Latin-American rate case hearing. He left last Friday night and spent several days in New York City before going on to the nNation's Capitol. Uncle Sam beckoned to George P. de Valcourt, 2840 S. W. First Avenue of Pan Am's metal shop, last week and he's in the Army now. To bid him farewell Charles Alexander gave a party last Saturday, which we hear, was quite a gay affair—and very, very, very unhappy. Thomas A. Kelley, 3108 Indiana Street, Coconut Grove, left the ranks of maintenance personnel on 'Spring Day to accept another position. Mr. Kelly was with P.A.A. for two years. It took an armored truck to run down Ralph D. Norsworthy, chief of the fabric and equipment shop, at the corner of S. W. 27th Avenue and Coral Way, and crush his newly-acquired Dodge automobile. Mr. Norsworthy was uninjured, but he's very, very unhappy. Off to New York last Saturday last Saturday for a visit with his parents went Mr. and Mrs. James E. Anderson, accompanied by their young daughter, Christine. Mr. Anderson, who is a P. A. A. captain, has been transferred to Rio. Influenza is still making life miserable for more than one member of the "Clipper Crowd". Among the latest victims is Mrs. Helen McNichols, who has been confined to her home at 603 Cadima Street, Coral Gables. Mrs. McNichol is in Pan Am's purchasing department. A senior Underwood Elliot Fisher operator is Miss Ann Pfipsen, now in General Accounts. Mrs. Horace Simms, of Dade City, Florida, came down to Coral Gables to visit her daughter, Miss Frances, at 123 Menores Avenue, and liked it so well she stayed six weeks—until her husband finally came down from Dade City to drag her home by the hair of her head. Which made Frances very unhappy, for she was getting fat on her mother's good cooking. We hope Mrs. Simms was keeping one eye on that very ardent young swain. whom the key-hole-peeker's say will soon take another secretary out of circulation. Also entertaining her parents over the weekend was Miss Myra Mason, "the bowling score keeper", who is planning to return to New York City early next month. Among new faces in the hangars are: Murray M. Chilton and William S. Marital. To the rapidly increasing list of junjor pilots are now added: Gordon W. Blackmon, Eugene F. Schultz and Matthew P. Archibald. Two of our honorable auditors learned to their discomfort that it is not well to go bicycle riding with the ever-popular Miss Mary Garrison. In a collision on the friveways at Dinner Key Terminal the auditors emerger with cuts and bruises; but Mary can scarcely breathe now, so wrapped up is she in adhesive tape. She suffered a minor fracture of a rib! Ah, ah, say paymaster Mercer. So, what. Miss Katherine Hepburn, she of the freckles, films, and slacks, caused Commotion and craning of necks when she passed through the International Airport at Dinner Key twice last Saturday, en route to and returning from Nassau. Miss Hepburn, the rumor goes, looks just like her pictures, minus the glamour. Much has happened to Grant Slater since his graduation from the University of Miami last June. 'Twasn't long thereafter that he landed a job as chemist in Pan Am's Dinner Key laboratories. Just last month he married the charming Miss Mary Elizabeth McLaughlin and set up housekeeping at 3608 St. Gaudens Road, Coconut Grove. Now the latest word is that he has just resigned his position with Pan Am to accept another elsewhere.

Dr. and Mrs. J. Delman Kuykendall will be honored guests at a reception on Sunday at 4 p. m., in the Plymouth Congregational Church courtyard. Ireland, chairman of the board, announces a musical program by the choir and Mrs. Gertrude Talbot Baker, organist. Assisting board trustees L. R. Copeland, Mrs. Mae Swing, Charles V. Kennedy and Arthur C. Gulliver, will be Frank Coleman and David Swanson, heads of the trustees and members of the young people's groups.

Alton Jones. With reservations for 60 tables of bridge already made, those wishing to attend are asked to notify the Gardens, by telephoning, 4-7100 before the day of the benefit. The club is being organized for entertainment of residents and visitors, membership fees of which will be nominal.
Bayfront Park Roadway Work Gets Under Way
Construction of two strips of roadway at the foot of McFarlane Road, in Coconut Grove Bayfront Park was begun this week, under direction of William Sydow, Miami public service director. The roadways will be 20-25 feet with a grass center, and are being laid with white pea rock, Mr. Sydow said, adding that white rock surface was being used because "it enhances the natural beauty of the park surroundings." Decision to construct the semicircular roadway and to retain an opening to the bayfront park for vehicular traffic was reached several weeks ago, following the circulation of petitions, deploring possible closing of the roadway. The city's park division, headed by Gerald L. Ash, public welfare director, will proceed with park beautification, planting palm trees, adding picnic benches and drinking fountain, at an early date, it was announced.
