Coconut Grove News
By Susan Howe Clark PHONE 4-1634-4-3132 Construction of a new church auditorium at an approximate cost of $35,000 was under way this week, by the Second Church of Christ, Scientist, on Main Highway, in Coconut Grove. Of concrete block stucco and reinforced concrete frame, the new building was designed by Kiehnel & Elliott, Miami architectural firm, and will be along refined classic lines of Spanish Colonial style. Roof will be of Spanish tile with stucco moldings. Interior will be plastered and ceiling will be of acoustically treated tile. Floors will be asphalt tile. Plans specify large awning-type windows throughout the structure, with recessed arrangement of fluorescent lighting. Later, choir and Christian library will adjoin the main auditorium. This will be incorporated in the future, main church edifice, which will now become an annex for Sunday school room. Tone cabinets and amplifiers will be placed in the Sunday school room, so that all church services and music will be heard throughout the edifice by Sunday school scholars as well as church audiences. The new church will be ready for occupancy in January and will seat 440, thus approximately doubling the former capacity. * * * Every soldier needs a canteen, and every receptacle calls for a lot of aluminum," and thereby hangs the story of the mighty need for this precious metal, according to Mrs. C. H. Reeder, Grove resident, wife of Mayor Reeder. Mrs. Reeder is salvage chairman for the Defense Council of Dade County, and is pleased to end with the success of the drive for old aluminum this week. "We don't expect our old aluminum pots and pans to be used for canteen and airplanes, but by making it available for other ordinary uses, it means the aluminum manufacturers can supply increased amounts for the government," Mrs. Reeder pointed out. An intensified campaign for collection of aluminum utensils is under way through this week, and will be concluded Monday. All metal received will be turned over to manufacturers with defense contracts to be used in the preparedness program. Mrs. Lary M. Duncan, president of the Lindley DeGarmo Post No. 70, American Legion Auxiliary, is in charge of the drive in Coconut Grove, and reports good response from residents here. All aluminum vessels and other articles are wanted and may be deposited in the Anthony Arcade, in charge of Mrs. Marion Macdonald, or the Red Cross Market, Southwest 27th Avenue, or at the Coconut Grove library. Housewives are urged to rummage the kitchen and storerooms for unused aluminum articles which will be called for by Coconut Grove Boy Scouts who are co-operating with the local committee in the campaign this week. * * * Mrs. Stella B. Martin, popularly known as the local legion auxiliary and postmistress of Coconut Grove from 1914-1918, has been appointed a probationary clerk by Postmaster George E. Merritt. She will begin her training in the main post office August 1 and will receive a permanent appointment upon completion of the probationary period. * * * Thor S. White, local mural artist, who has painted several large mural canvasses, has just completed one, measuring 10 feet high and 22 feet long, of a world map for outer station WKAT. The design was made by George Fackee, local interior decorator, and is done in a modern manner in bright tones with Mexican influence. * * * Rev. and Mrs. William J. Think Spanish To Speak It, Says Teacher
"You cannot learn to speak a foreign language fluently if you think out your statement twice, once in English and once in Spanish," according to Luis A. Garcia, head of the Berlitz School of Languages. Known internationally, through its 336 schools in all parts of the world, the Berlitz method teaches the beginner to "think and feel" the language through use of easy conversation conducted by college graduate native instructors. English is checked at the door of the classroom and established rule of the school of limiting a class to five students insures individual attention. The system maintains language schools in all large cities, thus enabling students to start a course in one city and continue it in another. A graduate of the Boston University and of the University of Mexico, Mr. Garcia was placed in charge of the Miami branch when it was established five months ago. He was formerly head of the Spanish department of the New York City school and has specialized in languages through several years.
CUT SCHOOL LEVIES
Attorney General Watson, in an opinion to State Superintendent Colin English, says that while local school special millages may be reduced in proportion to increased assessed valutions, even though such millages have been previously voted to the 1941 taxation laws. Due to increased tourists and defense construction, utility tax collections due October 1, are expected to show a big increase over last year. Insurance taxes are expected to show an increase, and both revenue sources go into the general fund. Only revenue source showing a decrease the past year is from inheritance taxes.

Twenty-five Club Members Enjoy Supper
The now famous nine-day diet did not interfere with the menu of the buffet supper served the members of the Coral Gables Business and Professional Woman's Club Tuesday night at the Venetian Pool. Hot meat loaf, baked macaroni and cheese, two or three kinds of coleslaw, raw carrots, new onions, radishes, coffee and ice cold watermelon was served 25 members. EXAMINE YOUR POLICY
Attorney General Watson, in a ruling to State Treasurer Ed Larson, says insurance "agents are not correct" when informing a policyholder "that he need not bother about co-insurance requirements because valued policy will pay him full amount of loss." Only when property is insured at full value may policyholder collect fully if property is totally destroyed, or full amount of partial destruction. When in doubt about fire and life insurance policy, policyholder should write J. Edwin Larsen,State Treasurer and Insurance Commissioner.

LESSON-SERMON ANNOUNCED
Churches of Christ, Scientist "Truth" is the subject of the lesson-sermon which will be read in Churches of Christ, Scientist, throughout the world on Sunday, July 27. The Golden Text is: "O praise the Lord, all ye nations. . . . For His merciful kindness is great toward us: and the truth of the Lord endureth forever (Psalms 117:1, 2). Among the citations which comprise the lesson-sermon is the following from the Bible: "Because I will publish the name of the Lord: ascribe ye greatness unto our God. He is the Rock, His work is perfect: for all His ways are judgment: a God of truth and without iniquity, just and right is He (Deut. 32, 3, 4). The lesson-sermon also includes the following passage from the Christian Science text-book "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy: "People go into ecstasies over the sense of a corporeal Jehovah, though with scarcely a spark of love in their hearts; yet God is Love, and without Love, God, immortality cannot appear. Mortals try to believe without understanding Truth; yet God is Truth" (p 312:14-19).
